Carson City Hospital celebrates 75 years in 2011
CARSON CITY — It was the early 1930s and Dr.
Emmett Binkert, a graduate of the Kirksville College
of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri, was looking
for a nice small
town to establish his new practice. He ap-
proached Carson City and was struck by the beauty
of the St. Mary’s Church steeple punctuating the
landscape. He knew this was the place for him.
“The sight of that steeple is still a landmark
for Carson City, and it’s a fun story to tell that Dr.
Binkert picked us because of it,” said Gary Sweet, a
35-year employee of Carson City Hospital and the
organization’s resident historian. “From what I have
learned from his daughters, Dr. Binkert founded
his practice here out of faith, and every subsequent
expansion of the hospital was done out of faith. I
believe this had a lot to do with our hospital’s con-
tinued success through many generations now.”
Dr. Binkert worked in a small office in down-
town Carson City for three years, before founding
Carson City Hospital inside his home in 1936. Since
those humble beginnings, there have been several
expansions and many technological improvements
of the facility, including the latest expansions of the
new, state- of-the-art Emergency Department, the

Conner C. Van Splunter
Army National Guard Pfc. Conner C. Van
Splunter has graduated from One Station
Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Leonard Wood,
Waynesville, Mo., which included basic mili-
tary training and advanced individual training
(AIT).
During basic military training, the trainee re-
ceived instruction in drill and ceremony, weap-
ons qualification, map reading, tactics, military
courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first
aid, and Army doctrine, history, principles and
traditions.
During AIT, the soldier completed the mili-
tary police specialist course to acquire skills to
provide combat area support, conduct battlefield
circulation control, area security, prisoner of war
operations, civilian internee operations, and law
and order operations. The trainee performed as
a team member in support of battlefield opera-
tions, installation law and order operations and
security of Army resources and installations. Ad-
ditional training included providing peacetime
support to the military community through se-
curity of resources, crime prevention programs,
and preservation of law and order.
She is the daughter of Craig S. and Christina
B. Van Splunter of Rockford.
Van Splunter graduated in 2010 from Rock-
ford High School.

Spring Exposition
set for April 2
The Maple Valley Complex in Trufant is
again hosting their Spring Exposition. The event
will be held on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. The Complex building is the former Trufant
Elementary School. Over 60 booths/vendors
were accessible to people attending the venue in
previous years. The entire Complex building and
outside lawn area has been reserved for the ven-
dors to promote their Business and product.
The event is again taking place on the same
day as the Petersen Consignment Auction Sale.
The Auction takes place on the Trufant Flea Mar-
ket Grounds, which is located about three blocks
from the Complex area. So, we are hoping for a
busy day in Trufant! If you would like more in-

Henry
Maciulaitis
Henry Maciulaitis, 73, of
Pierson, passed away Feb.
18, 2011, at Spectrum Health
Butterworth Campus.
He was born March 20,
1937, in Belmont, the son of
Henry and Helena Maciulaitis.
Henry worked on the farm as
well as being a loader opera-
tor for more than 30 years. He
loved bingo, watching birds,
watching cooking shows and
football.
Surviving are seven daugh-
ters, Linda Humbarger and
Wendy Lawson both of How-
ard City, Kathy Wright of Evart,
Shiela (John) Stears of Cons-
tatine, Patty (Robert) Jackson
of Howard City, Jody Maciulai-
tis of Pierson and Kelly Mac-
uilaitis of Howard City; two
sons Jerry (Pam) Lawson of
Sand Lake and Mark (Brenda)
Lawson of Howard City; many
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren; two sisters,
Lita Mitchel of Sand Lake and
Nancy Greenman of Argenti-
na; andnd several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded
in death by his parents; three
sons, Michael Sammons, John
Lawson and Dean Lawson;
grandson, Johnny Kronberg;
and a brother Arthur.
Memorial services took
place on Saturday, Feb. 26,
2011, at 1 p.m. at the Heck-
man funeral home with Tony
Wright officiating.

The Michigan Department
of Transportation has award-
ed federal funds to the village
of Howard City in Montcalm
County, so the community can
undertake specific aesthetic im-
provements in the downtown
area.
State Rep. Rick Outman,
R-Six Lakes, who represents
Montcalm County, was pleased
to hear of the MDOT decision.
“This is an excellent thing
for Howard City, and I’m ex-
cited to see the work getting
started,” Outman said. “It’s go-
ing to be great to have people
getting back to work and seeing
our community come out better
for it in all regards.”
The award will be used to
streetscape Ensley Street from
Williams Street to Shaw Street
and Edgerton Street from the
existing White Pine Trail to Lin-
coln Street. Intended to aesthet-
ically enhance the downtown
community, the improvements
should also strengthen the con-
nection to the White Pine Trail
and link the trail to downtown
dining, shopping and entertain-
ment.

What is a Blue Star Mother?

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.
is a non-partisan, non-political organiza-
tion. We do not support any political candi-
date, nor do we endorse any religious orga-
nization. The military represents all aspects
of America as does our organization.
We are mothers who now have, or have
had, children honorably serving in the mili-
tary. We are a non-profit (501[c]3) Veterans
service organization supporting our military
children while promoting patriotism.
The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.
is authorized by Title 36, Chapter 305 of the
United States Code (36 USC 305); Section
943, as of January 26, 1998.
I am a Blue Star Mother.
The service banner that hangs on the
front window of my home is a two star, blue
star banner. This shows those who drive by,
that I have had two children who have or
are honorably serving in our United States
Military. The service flag was authorized
as the official banner by the Department of
Defense for display by families who have
members serving during war or hostilities
in which the United States is engaged in.
The Service flag, also called the Blue Star
Flag, was designed and patented by WWI
Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the 5th
Ohio Infantry who had two sons serving on
the front line.
I joined the Blue Star Mother’s through
the national webpage. In looking for a lo-
cal chapter I found that the BSM Greenville
Chapter #2 is not able to hold meetings.
The by-laws state that a living member must
swear in the new members. There is one
living member who is in declining health.
Unfortunately she is unable to perform
the task necessary to reopen the chapter.
I spoke with someone from near the Flint
area and she was working in coordinating
a new chapter for the area mothers who are

interested in joining. The dues are $20.00
annually.
We now have a group, which currently
covers Ionia, Kent & Montcalm Counties.
We also have others in attendance from
towns beyond these counties. We meet
near Orleans at the home of a Patriot Guard
Rider who has opened his pole barn for our
use. We are currently submitting to the na-
tional BSM organization for inclusion to the
national organization and putting in the pa-
perwork for the 501(c)3 status.
Who can join BSM?
Mothers and other family members can
join BSM. The website explains member-
ship as: Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.

The Blue Star Mothers was founded as
a Veteran Service Organization and was
part of a movement to provide care pack-
ages to military members serving overseas
and also provided assistance to families
who encountered hardships as a result of
their son or husband serving in the war.
We are putting together a list of projects
to do as a group that will benefit our troops
overseas as well as troops and veterans lo-
cally. Working with Barden’s Funeral Home
of Stanton and many of the area elementary
schools, BSM recently sent out over 600
home made valentines to troops stationed
in Afghanistan. Our group is also collect-
ing old cell phones to have them either re-
furbished to send to troops or what can’t
be fixed can be sold for scrap & the money
then can be used to buy calling cards to
send overseas. Also any used DVDs in good
shape are being gathered and included in
boxes to send out to our troops. These are a
welcomed diversion for them.
We promote patriotism. We also sup-
port each other.
Our chapter also has two Gold Star
Mothers. These are mothers of Heroes who
paid the ultimate sacrifice in their service to
our country. These wonderful ladies want
to continue to support our troops and now
have adopted members added to their fami-
lies that they are in contact with.
Since we are a new group and are small
in numbers we openly welcome others to
join with us. If you have questions regard-

Two students from GRANT CHRISTIAN
SCHOOL have been named local winners in the
42nd annual America and Me essay contest, spon-
sored by Farm Bureau Insurance.
The two students, who earned the first and sec-
ond place awards for their school, are Abbie Cam-
menga, first, and Candy Morales, second. Both re-
ceived award certificates for their achievement. As

Abbie’s name will also be engraved on a plaque
for permanent display in the school

part of the large intestine. Colon
cancer or rectal cancer occurs
when the tissues in these areas
have cancerous cells that form tu-
mors. Cancer that begins in either
the large intestine or the rectum
is sometimes called colorectal
cancer.
Colorectal cancer affects both
men and women. Although the
causes aren’t clear, there are cer-
tain risk factors that may make
individuals more likely to develop
the disease, including:

n the presence of colorectal
polyps
n family history of colorectal
cancer
n genetic alterations (chang-
es in certain genes increases the
risk for colorectal cancer)

After reading an article by Dr. Mercola, I decided to share some of the information in this week’s column. You can
read the whole article on www.mercola.com. It is a great site. A murder-mystery comedy!
New research shows that there are big differences in how the sugars fructose and glucose are metabolized by
your body. Overweight study participants showed more evidence of insulin resistance and other risk factors for heart
disease and diabetes when 25 percent of their calories came from fructose-sweetened beverages instead of glucose-
sweetened beverages.

A study looked at 32 overweight or obese men and women. Over a 10-week period, they drank either glucose or
fructose sweetened beverages totaling 25 percent of their daily calorie intake. Both the groups gained weight during
