Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN)

In this competitive world of Business, every nation needs to accelerate efforts to

increase investments and to boost trade in services as it seeks a greater role in driving the
global economy. An agreement between nations plays a vital role in the economic
progress, it is where they collaborate plans in order to pursue an effective economic
growth, social progress and cultural development in their respective countrymen. One of
this is the Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN). Association of South East
Asian Nation (ASEAN) a political and economic organization of 10 countries in the
South East Asia; was established on the 8th of August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with
the signing of ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of
ASEAN namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines. Vietnam
joined in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999. ASEAN was
preceded by the Association of South East Asia commonly called as ASA. As set by the
declaration, ASEAN primarily aims to accelerate the economic growth social progress
and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality
and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful
community of Southeast Asian Nations as well as to promote regional peace and stability
through abiding respect and the rule of law and the relationship among its member
countries. ASEAN eyes a bigger role in the global economy as it emphasizes regional
cooperation in the “three pillars” the security, socio-cultural and economic integration.
The motivation of the birth of ASEAN were so that its members governing elite could
concentrate to the nation building and to adopt the fundamental principles which is to
have the mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality and territorial
integrity, and national identity of all nations.
ASEAN member countries collaborate external schemes in
order satisfy their economic growth. The organization has
created several projects in the economic community that we are
satisfying nowadays. Free Trade Area, Comprehensive
Investment Area, Trade in services, Single aviation market, Free
Trade agreements with other countries among others: The aim is
to increase investments and trade in service in the global
economy

ASEAN holds meetings known as the ASEAN Summit

where the head of state of each South East Asian Countries
discuss and resolve regional issues as well as to conduct
meeting with other nation outside this bloc which purpose
is to discuss external issues.

After 40 years, many consider ASEAN to be very

successful in part because of the ongoing stability in the
region. Instead of worrying about military conflict, its
member countries have been able to focus on development
of their political and economic systems.

The group has also made a strong stance against terrorism with regional partner,
Australia. In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Bali and Jakarta in the past eight years,
ASEAN has refocused its efforts to prevent incidents and capture perpetrators.

In November 2007 the group signed a new charter that established ASEAN as a rule-
based entity that would promote efficiency and concrete decisions rather than simply a
large discussion group it has sometimes been labeled. The charter also commits members
to advocate democratic ideals and human rights.

ASEAN is often criticized for saying on the one hand that

democratic principles guide them, while on the other allowing
human rights violations to occur in Myanmar, and socialism to
rule in Vietnam and Laos. Protesters of free market who fear the
loss of local jobs and economies have appeared all over the
region, most notably at the 12th ASEAN summit in Cebu in the
Philippines.

Despite any objections, ASEAN is well on its way to full

economic integration and is making great strides to fully assert
itself on the world market.
