"To survive, any business or corporation must be useful to the society it serves. " - Oscar
M. Lopez, Chairman of the Lopez Group.
"Profit alone is not enough reason to go into business. But if we can serve people, then I
think our growth and our success will follow. If we take care of our customers, then they
will take care of us. " - Eugenio Lopez, Jr.
ABS-CBN Foundation
Through the years, it has also implemented selected projects addressing specific,
environmental issues at hand, one of which is the “Butil Para Sa Buhay” (Grain for Life).
AFI provided food relief for the starving upland communities in Tampacan, South
Cotabato composed of about 57 sitios/puroks in six barangays during the height of the El
Nino phenomenon beginning May 1998. However, it was found out that poverty
experienced in the uplands is largely due to the grave destruction of the upland
environment. Therefore, in exchange for the food, the beneficiaries were asked to help
rehabilitate their immediate environment by planting fruit and forest trees in their upland
farms and shifting from slash-and-burn activities to more environment-friendly farming
practices. The “rice assistance” was spread over three months and timed with a specific
agro-forestry activity such that only those farmers who adhered to a prescribed activity
were given the period’s ration. Around 2,500 poor upland families participated and the
Foundation distributed some 2,700 cavans of rice. Likewise, approximately 16,000
seedlings were also distributed for planting in addition to the minimum 50 trees required
from each household giving a total of about 111,250 seedlings. These were planted in six
upland communities with above 90% survival rate. To sustain the initiative, farmers (at
least one farmer per barangay) who planted the most number of trees with the highest
survival rate were given a draft animal (carabao/horse). The Provincial Social Welfare
and Development (PSWD) Office; Provincial DENR, Department of Agriculture (DA)
and local government units (LGUs) supported this project, which was eventually turned
over to the local government.
It also used to have the Bantay Kalikasan Patrol, which encourages compliance to
environmental laws as it exposes individuals, agencies and companies who abuse the
environment. Pro-actively, the Project likewise aims to highlight good practices by
private individuals, the Government, businesses, non-government organizations, and
communities that promote environmental awareness and conservation as it hopes to
create synergy for environmental action. Another is the Bantay Kalikasan EcoMart, a
store offering eco-friendly products and other BK advocacy items. Aside from these,
some of its other worthwhile projects are the Bantay Basura Project which was tasked to
promote awareness and to lobby for a reasonable and effective solution to the solid waste
problem; and the Bantay Usok Project which aimed to reduce Metro Manila’s vehicular
smoke emissions to acceptable standards. The Bantay Usok Project initiated the Clean
Air Act Signature Campaign and was thus instrumental in the passage of the Clean Air
Act in the country.
To date, Bantay Kalikasan has six projects: Save the La Mesa Watershed Project
which consists of the La Mesa Eco-Park and La Mesa Nature Reserve, BK
Environmental Hotline, Bantay Baterya, Bantay Langis, and H2Hope.
Goals/Objectives
Bantay Kalikasan committed itself to undertake and catalyze initiatives by
maximizing media resources to help ensure an actively protected, adequately
rehabilitated, and sustainably developed environment. Its current objectives are as
follows:
“SM has the unique opportunity to create a more positive environment, to help build and
improve the lives of those with scarce resources. One only needs to look at how vast and
seemingly urgent this opportunity is.” –Henry Sy, Sr. Chairman, SM Foundation Inc.
SM Foundation Inc.
SM Foundation is the socio civic arm of the SM Group of Companies through which it
helps the less fortunate in the communities it serves. These are areas within the vicinity of
SM department stores and supermalls that need assistance.
The Foundation has four areas of advocacy: education through scholarship programs and
donations to schoolhouses; mall-based outreach programs; health oriented projects like
medical missions, a mobile clinic, and hospital activity centers and religious community
projects.
SM Founder and Chairman Henry Sy, Sr. established SM Foundation to help the less
privileged members of our society. The assistance initially consisted of donations to
charitable institutions, but has since included scholarship programs and other community
projects.
In response to the complexities of the contemporary world, the Knowledge, Creativity &
Freedom Program seeks to encourage palpable changes that improve people's lives, honor
their aspirations, enrich the wider society and achieve lasting impact.
In Community Development we seek to improve the quality of life and opportunities for
positive change in urban and rural communities. We support community-based
institutions that mobilize and leverage philanthropic capital, investment capital, social
capital and natural resources in a responsible and fair manner.
EDUCATION
SM Foundation takes pride in its scholars’ achievements. The 2010 batch of graduates
composed of 105 scholars yielded 52 who attained Latin Honors and Academic

The GBF Technical Training Center (GBF TTC) is a P100 million facility in

JG-ILED
The John Gokongwei Institute for Leadership and Enterprise Development (JG-
ILED) was developed in 2005 to: (1) further strengthen the commitment to continued
learning, organizational growth and career development; (2) enable leaders to develop
strategies for competitiveness of the company; and (3) help in the development of JG
Summit employees.
Currently, JG-ILED is in the process of developing different training programs that will
cut across the different employees of the conglomerate. These programs will be geared
towards building business success, developing leadership and strengthening functional
capabilities. As JG-ILED is being evolved, it is positioned to become the platform for
systematic and sustained development programs that maximize internal resources across
JG Summit and create a one leadership brand among its employees.
