Lopez Holdings Corporation

Corporate Social Responsibility

"To survive, any business or corporation must be useful to the society it serves. " - Oscar
M. Lopez, Chairman of the Lopez Group.

"Profit alone is not enough reason to go into business. But if we can serve people, then I
think our growth and our success will follow. If we take care of our customers, then they
will take care of us. " - Eugenio Lopez, Jr.

ABS-CBN Foundation

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, already a communications giant in Asia,

made a corporate commitment to the public by establishing the ABS-CBN Foundation,
Inc. (AFI) in the Philippines. Duly incorporated and registered with Securities and
Exchange Commission with SEC. Reg. No. 165508 on July 5, 1989, AFI is a non-stock,
non-profit organization. Initially, the AFI was asked to produce television programs for
charitable and educational purposes. Its chief concerns then were to generate welfare
funds by broadcasting the situations of those in dire need of assistance and ensuring the
proper allotment and utilization of solicited help.

ABS-CBN Foundation-BANTAY KALIKASAN

As an expression of ABS-CBN’s genuine regard for social responsibility and

community service, the ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI) was organized in 1989. Being
ABS-CBN’s socio-civic arm, AFI’s initial mandate was to generate welfare funds by
broadcasting the plight of those in need of assistance and ensure that all forms of help
solicited were properly allocated and utilized. Eventually, AFI restructured itself and
geared up for a more determined, all-around developmental approach as it aims to
provide a better quality of life for all Filipinos in general and every Filipino child in
particular. All development programs for the grassroots carry a significant slant designed
to directly benefit children. At present, AFI has four flagship programs – E-media,
Bantay Bata, Bantay Kalikasan, and Sagip Kapamilya. Bantay Kalikasan (Nature Watch),
AFI’s environmental arm, started on July 21, 1998. It is a media-based project supported
by a multi-sector network of government agencies, private institutions, and non-
government organizations. It was launched to serve as a catalyst in addressing the
concern over the worsening state of the Philippine environment characterized by air and
water pollution, denudation of forests, irresponsible waste disposal and their life-
threatening effects.

Through the years, it has also implemented selected projects addressing specific,
environmental issues at hand, one of which is the “Butil Para Sa Buhay” (Grain for Life).
AFI provided food relief for the starving upland communities in Tampacan, South
Cotabato composed of about 57 sitios/puroks in six barangays during the height of the El
Nino phenomenon beginning May 1998. However, it was found out that poverty
experienced in the uplands is largely due to the grave destruction of the upland
environment. Therefore, in exchange for the food, the beneficiaries were asked to help
rehabilitate their immediate environment by planting fruit and forest trees in their upland
farms and shifting from slash-and-burn activities to more environment-friendly farming
practices. The “rice assistance” was spread over three months and timed with a specific
agro-forestry activity such that only those farmers who adhered to a prescribed activity
were given the period’s ration. Around 2,500 poor upland families participated and the
Foundation distributed some 2,700 cavans of rice. Likewise, approximately 16,000
seedlings were also distributed for planting in addition to the minimum 50 trees required
from each household giving a total of about 111,250 seedlings. These were planted in six
upland communities with above 90% survival rate. To sustain the initiative, farmers (at
least one farmer per barangay) who planted the most number of trees with the highest
survival rate were given a draft animal (carabao/horse). The Provincial Social Welfare
and Development (PSWD) Office; Provincial DENR, Department of Agriculture (DA)
and local government units (LGUs) supported this project, which was eventually turned
over to the local government.

It also used to have the Bantay Kalikasan Patrol, which encourages compliance to
environmental laws as it exposes individuals, agencies and companies who abuse the
environment. Pro-actively, the Project likewise aims to highlight good practices by
private individuals, the Government, businesses, non-government organizations, and
communities that promote environmental awareness and conservation as it hopes to
create synergy for environmental action. Another is the Bantay Kalikasan EcoMart, a
store offering eco-friendly products and other BK advocacy items. Aside from these,
some of its other worthwhile projects are the Bantay Basura Project which was tasked to
promote awareness and to lobby for a reasonable and effective solution to the solid waste
problem; and the Bantay Usok Project which aimed to reduce Metro Manila’s vehicular
smoke emissions to acceptable standards. The Bantay Usok Project initiated the Clean
Air Act Signature Campaign and was thus instrumental in the passage of the Clean Air
Act in the country.

To date, Bantay Kalikasan has six projects: Save the La Mesa Watershed Project
which consists of the La Mesa Eco-Park and La Mesa Nature Reserve, BK
Environmental Hotline, Bantay Baterya, Bantay Langis, and H2Hope.

Goals/Objectives
Bantay Kalikasan committed itself to undertake and catalyze initiatives by
maximizing media resources to help ensure an actively protected, adequately
rehabilitated, and sustainably developed environment. Its current objectives are as
follows:

• Develop and implement strategic environmental projects;

• Raise public consciousness on environmental issues and concerns;
• Provide a venue for publicizing and addressing environmental issues, problems
and similar concerns; and
• Urge the effective enforcement of relevant environmental policies and laws.

seemingly urgent this opportunity is.” –Henry Sy, Sr. Chairman, SM Foundation Inc.

SM Foundation Inc.

SM Foundation is the socio civic arm of the SM Group of Companies through which it
helps the less fortunate in the communities it serves. These are areas within the vicinity of
SM department stores and supermalls that need assistance.

donations to schoolhouses; mall-based outreach programs; health oriented projects like
medical missions, a mobile clinic, and hospital activity centers and religious community
projects.

JG Summit Holdings Inc.
Corporate Social Responsibility

Born from JG Summit’s commitment to social responsibility, the Gokongwei

Brothers Foundation (GBF) was set up in 1992 to help uplift the socio-economic
condition of Filipinos through the funding of educational projects.
The first of these was the Technical Training Center for skilled graduates in various
engineering fields. A significant endowment by the foundation to the Ateneo de Manila
University then led to the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM), a regional
powerhouse in the field of management education. It has also aggressively donated
facilities and scholarships, and supported educational programs to help train our next
generation of business and government leaders in schools such as Immaculate
Concepcion Academy, Xavier School, De La Salle University, the University of Asia and
the Pacific and the University of San Carlos. The foundation even donated its prime lot in
Ortigas for the EDSA Shrine. In 2007, GBF granted 34 young Filipinos, the first batch of
GBF China Scholars, with full year-long scholarship to the prestigious Beijing Language
and Culture University, in Beijing China. These scholars study Mandarin and Chinese
culture in the hopes of strengthening the Philippines’ global competitiveness by
application of knowledge in their home country.
Through the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation’s continuing commitment to education, JG
Summit intends to fulfill its responsibility to the country – and lead Filipinos to an even
better life ahead.

with focus on technology
• Continuing Technical Professional Education: GBF offers programs for JG
Summit incumbents, with focus on upgrading technical knowledge and skills
• Retail & Service Academy: started in 2003, courses that address the needs of the
retail and service businesses

The Children’s Library

The Gokongwei Brothers Foundation has empowered many educationally-

disadvantaged children through The Children’s Library (TCL), the first public library
funded by a private organization. This program, which is a joint project with Robinsons
Malls, makes available books, multi-media equipment, and educational activities in
various public libraries in Metro Manila.
In 2000, TCL opened its doors to the Filipino youth. Aside from its facilities in
Robinsons Novaliches and Robinsons Imus, this interactive learning and entertainment
venue has expanded its reach to accommodate more public school children with its TCL
Corners in both San Juan Public Library and the Pasig Public Library. In all these venues,
TCL regularly holds educational and entertaining activities such as storytelling sessions,
puppet shows, film showing and workshops.
JG Summit and The Children’s Library are continuously working towards a future where
multi-media resource centers are available to every child, and where communities
contribute to the total development of the Filipino youth.

Gokongwei Brothers Foundation China Scholars

The Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) China scholarship was established to

develop a pool of young professionals who will spearhead efforts to strengthen the global
competitiveness of the Philippines through learnings from the Chinese language and
culture.
For the first batch of scholars, the scholarship committee awarded 34 college graduates
and young professionals the rare opportunity to fly to Beijing, China for a one-year full
scholarship program at the prestigious Beijing Language and Culture University.
Chosen based on academic standing, leadership ability, cross-cultural experience, career
goals, and emotional maturity, the scholars were formally presented to the program’s
proponent and GBF Chairman of the Board, John Gokongwei, Jr. during a send-off
dinner.

JG-ILED

The John Gokongwei Institute for Leadership and Enterprise Development (JG-
ILED) was developed in 2005 to: (1) further strengthen the commitment to continued
learning, organizational growth and career development; (2) enable leaders to develop
strategies for competitiveness of the company; and (3) help in the development of JG
Summit employees.
Currently, JG-ILED is in the process of developing different training programs that will
cut across the different employees of the conglomerate. These programs will be geared
towards building business success, developing leadership and strengthening functional
capabilities. As JG-ILED is being evolved, it is positioned to become the platform for
systematic and sustained development programs that maximize internal resources across
JG Summit and create a one leadership brand among its employees.
