Asking for and Giving Directions


Grade Level: First Year

Subject(s): English

Duration: 2 periods, 40 minutes per period

Description: An exercise on consolidation of skills in giving verbal directions by using jazz chants.

Goal: To consolidate students' skills in giving verbal directions.

A. OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will chant phrases, expressions and exclamations that concerns.


2. Students will be able to give verbal directions accurately.
3. Students will employ correct grammar, e.g., imperatives and infinitives, in giving directions.
4. Students will realize the value of giving and following directions.

Materials:
• pens
• computer with PowerPoint application
• projector
• Giving Directions worksheet
B. LESSON STRATEGY:

Warming-up: Showing of short clip about people who are lost


Development:
• Discussing how to ask for directions politely and how to give verbal directions properly
• Using Jazz chants to practice giving directions
Application: Answering a worksheet and role playing about Giving Directions
Evaluation: Collaborating with classmates to create their own jazz chant based on the Giving Directions
worksheet

C. LESSON ACTIVITIES:

Warming Up (5 minutes):

Students are shown a short clip about people who are lost. Then, they are asked the following questions:
1. What do you think should the character in the comic strip do?
2. Have you ever been lost? How did you feel? What did you do?

Developmental Lesson (20 minutes):

Students are introduced to the idea of a “jazz chant”. Students are asked what makes jazz special and
what are chants. Key words such as word stress, intonation, contraction and reduction are reviewed.
Then, they are asked to listen to a sample of a jazz chant about asking for and giving directions.

After the students have heard the chant, they will practice reading/saying it in rhythm.

Optional Activity: Group the students and ask them to liven up the jazz chant by using varied actions
and formations.

Application (10 minutes):

The students are asked to practice giving directions with a partner by using the Giving Directions
worksheet.

D. EVALUATION:

Students are asked to form groups of 5 and they must come up with their own Jazz chant, consisting of
at least 8 lines, which gives direction based on the information in the Giving Directions worksheet. The
Jazz chant will be performed in front of the class on the next meeting and it will be graded based on the
content creativity, musicality, grammar, and compliance with instructions.

There are many ways to give directions. One common way to give directions is to give the name of the street
and then some building nearby. Below are some examples. Fill in the name of the building that they are talking
about:
