A ghost town is a town that becomes deserted because most of its
residents leave.
Although many ghost towns exist everywhere in the world, they are
particularly numerous in the
western United States, especially in the states of Arizona, Colorado,
Montana, and Utah. As people
explored the United States in the 19th century, they often discovered
deposits of gold, silver or
copper. Mines were quickly set up. Houses were built for the miners,
some of whom grew rich.
Most of these towns also had a hotel, a bar, and several shops.
However, in many of these mining
towns, the mine soon ran out of ore, and jobs suddenly dried up.
Many people were left no choice
but to leave and find work elsewhere. Few if anyone lived on in the
town, and it became a ghost
town.
One of the largest and best-preserved ghost towns in the United
States is Jerome, Arizona.
A soldier called Al Sieber found copper and gold in Jerome in 1865,
and in 1882 a mine was built
on the steep slopes of Cleopatra Hill. At its peak in the 1920s, Jerome
had a population of over
15,000. However, the mines stopped being profitable after World War
II (1939-1945) and were
closed. Thousands of people left, and Jerome became a ghost town.
Now fewer than 500 people
live there. However, Jerome has become a tourist attraction, and the
residents make a living
selling souvenirs to visitors.

our offices during business hours, Monday
– Friday, 9am to 5pm at 1-800-555-ANGEL.
The Itinerary
Your cruise will take you to nine ports.
The first two stops are at
Portuguese islands. The first is
a single day spent in Ponta
Delgada, in the Azores. The
second stop (two days) is at
Funchal, the capital city of the
Madeira Islands. Funchal has
magnificent beaches and is
the perfect place to relax after
the Atlantic crossing. You then
head east to the European mainland. A twoday
stop allows you plenty of time to explore
Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. Lisbon’s old town
features narrow and winding streets, while
the modern part of the city has straight,
broad, tree-lined avenues, large squares,
extensive public gardens, along with huge
skyscrapers.
The first stop in the Mediterranean Sea is
at Barcelona, the only stop on mainland
Spain. Here during your two-day stay you can
stroll down the Rambla, visit the numerous
art galleries, or gaze in admiration at the
Church of the Sacred Family, a huge and yet
unfinished cathedral notable for the curves
and elaborate patterns of its architect, Gaudí.
From Barcelona, the Paradise Angel heads
east along the coastlines of Spain, France
and Italy before stopping for a day at Genoa,
the birthplace of the explorer Christopher
Columbus. The second stop in Italy gives
you three days at the nation’s capital, Rome.
One of the great tourist cities of the world,
there are numerous tourist attractions here.
The Colosseum is one of the most famous
pieces of architecture in the world, while the
Pantheon one of the best preserved temples
of the ancient world, and the 18th-century
Trevi fountain is world famous. There is also
the Vatican palace, the home of the Pope and
more than 1,000 rooms including the Sistine
Chapel, the ceiling of which was painted by
Michelangelo.
From Rome, you will go
south to the continent of
Africa. The first stop (two
days) is in Tunis, the capital
of Tunisia. Tunis is split
into two parts: the older
walled Muslim quarter and
the newer European one.
The streets of the Muslim
quarter are narrow and
winding, with several fantastic bazaars and
mosques. A day trip is organized to the
ancient city of Carthage. From Tunis you
leave the Mediterranean Sea, but there are
still two stops. The first is at Casablanca,
where you spend two days. Although not its
capital, Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city
and port. It has a unique atmosphere, which
you have to experience to understand. After
the hustle and bustle of Casablanca, the
last stop offers magnificent Spanish beaches
on which to relax. You spend two days at
beautiful Santa Cruz in the Canary Islands,
and then sit back and put your feet up as you
return back across the Atlantic.
Take the Holiday of a Lifetime: a 4-week cruise to the
western Mediterranean Sea!

Read the following news item from the local newspaper about summer
holiday.
Then choose either Task A OR Task B. For Task A, you will write a letter. For
Task B, you will write an essay.
Do only ONE of these tasks. If you write about something else, your paper
will not be graded. Your writing
will be graded on how clearly you express your ideas in English.
You will have 30 minutes to write your letter or essay. You should write
about one page in 30 minutes.
You may use pen or pencil for the Writing Section of the exam. You may
make any changes, corrections or
additions in the body of the letter or essay. Do not waste time copying it
over.
Writing
TASK A - LETTER
Should summer holiday be shortened? Why or why not? Write a letter to the
editor of the local newspaper
expressing your views on this topic.
TASK B - ESSAY
How do you think children should spend their holiday time in the summer?
Describe what you think is
important about holidays for young people, what good it does for them and
how much time off they
really need.
The City Voice
This week educational leaders discussed whether or not to shorten the
traditional summer holiday. “Three months is far too much time off,” they
claim. “Students don’t need that much time to relax and rest up for the
new school year in the fall.” Some lawmakers believe it would be better to
shorten the summer holiday from ten weeks to six. In place of swimming
and playing with friends, children would stay in school until the middle
of July then break until the end of August. Parents’ and children’s groups
disagree with the plan. This weekend the local mayor will hold an open
discussion on the topic. Everyone is welcome to attend and express their
views.

Suplementar y Writing Practice
A) BRAINSTORMING
B) LANGUAGE USE
C) VOCAB ULARY PRAC TICE
Read the prompt and answer the following questions:
a. What do lawmakers want to do?
b. How long is the summer holiday going to be for students?
c. What reasons would lawmakers have for this change?
d. How do parents and children’s group feel about that?
e. What points can parents use to support their argument?
f. What is your opinion about this?
Here are some stylistic considerations for a letter to the Editor. The
following statements are taken from a letter
written by a reader who thinks that summer holidays are too long. Which of
the following statements are
appropriate for a letter to the Editor?
A. Six week summer holiday yet teachers continue to complain. Pathetic!
The word pathetic is inappropriate
according to suggestion 2 below.
B. Children should have more days of work in the summer because they
miss so many days of school
during the year. Appropriate according to suggestion 1 below.
C. Don’t reduce summer holidays. Inappropriate according to suggestion 3
below.
D. You don’t have work that’s why you don’t mind shorter school holidays.
Inappropriate according to suggestion 4
below.
Here are four opinions on the topic. Fill in the blanks with the given
expressions and say if each opinion is for
or against shorter school holidays.
A. Children need a prolonged away from schools, pressure
and homework, a chance during the bright summer
months to enjoy the best part of the day during a
wonderful time of their lives. It would be wrong to impose
year round schooling that would be stealing their precious
moments away.
B. What a shame if school children could no longer enjoy
the long summer holidays. Children need time to take
things at their own pace rather than fitting into structured
timetables all the time. I remember going back to school
in September fully refreshed and eager to see my friends
and do some work. With shorter breaks I am sure I
wouldn't have felt that same enthusiasm.
C. Quality not more quantity is the answer to educational
problems. Longer school terms may also put more stress
on teachers who already complain of being overworked.
Creating an environment in schools which encourages
the will to learn and succeed is the answer I believe.
D. We live in a rapidly changing world in which our
educational system is evolving. If these proposals are
not accepted, it is inevitable that the academic calendar will
have to be revised in the not too distant future.
Match the appropriate statements from above with the suggestions below.
1. Don't assume your audience understands. Explain your opinion.
