FOUNDATION STUDIES
Instructions to students:
Prepare a 5-minute speech on a topic of your choice. Take into consideration all the important features of a
speech, based on what you have learnt so far. Be clear about your topic, purpose and content. Make sure you
title your speech and present at least 3 main ideas with 3 supporting ideas. Attempt to establish good eye
contact with your audience during your presentation, not reading from a text or manuscript. You will present
your speech during tutorials starting from Week 5. This assessment will contribute 10% to your overall
grade of this subject.
Guidelines:
3. Grading 35 marks (10% of the overall grade), see grading criteria below
5. Topic Any appropriate topic of the student’s choice (screened by the tutor)
7. Use of visual aids optional (students may use own presentational aids)
8. No. of presentation At least eight (8) presentations per tutorial session starting from Week 5. The
class rep. will prepare the name list of presenters and submit to the assessor.
IMPORTANT NOTE : If anyone fails to present their speech according to the schedule and date agreed by
the tutorial group without a valid reason and Leave of Absence (approved by the
University), the maximum marks that could be awarded is 10 (out of 20).

Grading criteria
Language (4 marks)
4 Few or no mistake (except some negligible slips), meaning is clearly expressed, sentence structures
and vocabulary are varied and used appropriately
3 Some minor mistakes, language is almost always accurate to convey intended meaning, some
variation in the use of sentence structures and vocabulary
2 Language is largely accurate but mistakes are evident, especially complex structures, vocabulary is
adequate but not sufficiently varied
1 Meaning is fairly clear but with high incidence of errors in most aspects, sentence structures and
vocabulary are limited and inadequate
