Following Garne came William Hugh Burndred. He was
associated with Dr Commander Horace Norman Barnes; each was
attached to the British navy in the war. They were admitted as
members of the dental association on 14 December 1946. Both left
Ceylon in December 1950. Next came Dr GPD Rajasooriya (who
died in harness) and then Dr Pakatun for a very brief period

Kartagener’s syndrome
Manes Kartagener (1897–1975) was born on 7 January
1897 in Galizian, Czechoslovakia, where his father was a
Rabbi. He migrated to Switzerland in 1916, qualified as a
doctor in 1924 and became a cardiorespiratory physician
in Zurich. He obtained his doctorate in 1928 for a thesis on
the thyroid gland but he was also acclaimed for his disser-
tation on the aetiology of bronchiectasis. He died in Zurich
on 5 August 1975.
His syndrome comprises situs inversus of the viscera
and abnormal frontal sinuses. Immobility of the respira-
tory cilia leads to bronchiectasis. Primary ciliary dyskine-
sia (or the congenital ciliary immotility syndrome) has an
autoimmune recessive inheritance with incomplete pene-
trance. The ultrastructure of cilia throughout the body is

disordered, giving rise to slow and poorly coordinated
ciliary beating. Poor mucociliary transport in the respira-
tory tract results in rhinitis, sinusitis, recurrent bronchitis
and bronchiectasis. Spermatozoa have defective dynein
arms or spoke heads so their immotility causes male infer-
tility. When the rotation of the embryonic gut is not
guided by ciliary movements, the rotation takes place at
random, resulting in situs inversus in about half of
affected individuals.1
