LAS 2.

All teachers should model effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills
during their direct and indirect instructional activities. The most important
communicator in the classroom is the teacher, who should model English language
arts skills.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

The standard wants me to understand that in order to truly be able to teach writing and

language arts to my students, I need to model effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening

skills in the classroom. Students, especially young students, learn most from the models in their

lives. Additionally, learning takes place most effectively when it is actively observed. Therefore,

as an educator, it is imperative that I model proper English language skills for my students.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The artifact I selected, which was an assignment for my CI 476 class, is a project called

“Teacher as a Writer.” The objective of this assignment was to reflect on the stages of the writing

process and create an original work. I believe this artifact demonstrates my knowledge of the

standard through displaying my “know[ledge] and understand[ing] [of] the rules of English

grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax for both written and oral contexts.”

The fictional story that I created was influced by some important things in my life, such as the

city I live in, my favorite animal, and my dog’s name. However, I was able to take these different

aspects of my life and translate them into a story, showcasing my knowledge of “how to

communicate ideas in writing to accomplish a variety of purposes.”

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

I think as a teacher it is extremely important that one models writing, reading, listening,

and speaking skills for your students. This project was imperative in helping me realize that once

I become a teacher and am encouraging my students to write, I need to continue to write and

share with my students. The writing process is essential as students begin to develop confidence

and stamina in writing. Being able to show my students that as an adult, I still go through the

same process can be encouraging for my students.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

Writing can be a very personal experience. I think that it is important to give students

choice and help them understanding many different forms and genres of writing and writing.

Teaching in a diverse society means knowing how to differentiate and modify lessons and

experiences in language arts for students. In your average classroom, there may be students who

cannot read and write well, however, it is important to show them that no matter what ability

level that they can develop into effective readers and writers.
