Career Fair Schedule
The public portion of the 2008 European Career Fair takes place at MIT on
Saturday, February 2. This is open to all, and no prior registration is required.
Here the candidates can talk with company representatives, learn about
employment opportunities in Europe, and network with others.
Sunday and Monday are reserved for closed-door interviews that were
previously arranged by the companies. There are also public events on these
days.

Welcome to the Fair
Dear European Career Fair participants,
As the organizers of this event, we would like to extend a warm welcome to you!
In 2008, the European Career Fair at MIT will be held for the 12th time and will foster
the development of transatlantic careers more than ever. The need for internationally
educated, top-tier candidates as well as the growing interest in Europe as a place to live
and work, continue to shape ECF. This year, our motto has been concentrated into one
essential word: Connect!
Our long-standing partnership with the MIT Science and Technology Initiatives
(MISTI) has greatly contributed to the scope of the fair. In addition, the second year of
partnering with the European Commission has again given rise to a unique Science &
Technology section that offers splendid opportunities for academic careers in Europe.
We are grateful to both our partners for such fruitful and satisfying relationships.
For the first time in 2008, we are offering a variety of additional resources to our
candidates through various collaborations: We are greeting representatives from the
International Career Fair in San Francisco and the IKOM in Munich, Germany. In
addition, we are proud to offer a variety of career and networking tools to the candidates
through Nature Network Boston and the ScienceCareers services.
Roughly 4,000 registered candidates and more than 130 exhibitors make this year’s fair
not only the largest European Career Fair at MIT, but also the largest event of its kind
on the entire continent. We are proud of this achievement and we say thank you to the
ECF 2008 team. These highly motivated volunteers – all excellent candidates themselves
- who crafted this wonderful success with patience, resilience, outstanding dedication,
and the necessary sense of humor have made this event possible.

MIT European Club
The MIT European Club would like to extend a warm welcome to our 12th
European Career Fair!
We are a student-run organization affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute

of Technology having a membership of nearly 3,000 people who come from
almost every part of the world and share a common interest in Europe. Over
the years, the MIT European Club has established itself as a reference
point for many European scholars, academics, and professionals coming to
the Boston area. It is one of MIT’s most active and diverse student groups,
and organizes activities ranging from athletics to cultural events, along with
excursion for hiking and whitewater rafting in the summer, foliage tours in
the autumn, and skiing in the winter. Our staple social event is our weekly
Thursday Pub Tour, when we gather at a local pub to mingle and chat.
The European Career Fair is our most visible event on campus. It is the main
activity we hold to further the professional development of our members and
people interested in working in Europe. The fair is the largest of its kind in
the United States, providing domestic, foreign, and multinational companies
access to some of the top talents from the world’s most renowned academic
institutions. It is not only designed to provide information and personal contact
with recruiters, but also to allow them to schedule job interviews on the days
immediately following the fair.
All the events sponsored by the Club are organized by our members, who
volunteer their time, ideas, drive, and skills. Their dedication and efforts are
essential for the club’s success and at the core of what we do. In order to
remain dynamic and active, we are constantly seeking new members to
assist in running the Club. We encourage you to join us, come to the planning
meetings, and above all, have fun participating in our activities!

MISTI
MISTI is one of MIT’s prime initiators of international
collaborations. Through its France, Germany, Italy and Spain
Programs, MISTI has established a strong partnership with
many of Europe’s leading companies and research centers.
We welcome the participants in the 2008 European Career Fair as partners in
the pursuit of this common mission.
Partnering with MISTI
MISTI works closely with corporate partners on initiatives ranging from
internships and recruitment events to workshops and seminars. Membership
in the MISTI Corporate Consortium provides companies with access to MIT,
visibility on campus and the opportunity to define their brand at MIT.
Internships
Hosting a MIT intern is one of the most effective ways for companies and research
labs to establish a direct link with MIT. To our students, these internships offer
an opportunity to experience first-hand other work and research cultures. Each
year, MISTI places over 300 MIT students in three to 12-month internships
abroad. Over half of these internships take place in Europe.
International Seed Funds
MISTI also supports MIT faculty and their European counterparts in cross-
border collaborations with research institutes and universities in France, Italy
and Spain.

ECF-IKOM Alliance
The European Career Fair of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

and the IKOM of the Technical University of Munich recognize the value
of establishing a collaborative relationship to foster the intercontinental
scientific and entrepreneurial connection. The ECF and the IKOM have
formed a partnership alliance to support each other, creating synergies that
will benefit students looking for jobs, internships, research opportunities,
and other types of programs.
IKOM – Career fair of the Technical University of Munich
As an official partner of the European Career Fair at MIT, the IKOM is

proud to offer its variety of European career services to the visitors of
the ECF. The IKOM is the largest career fair in Southern Germany and
it is located in Munich – the heart of central Europe. 220 companies are
expected to present themselves (2008) at the three different fairs.
The main fair IKOM takes place every year in June. German and
international companies from all industry branches are represented. The
number of visitors exceeds 10.000 students.
In addition, the IKOM organizes the IKOM Lifescience that is taking

place in May. This fair focuses on biotechnology firms.
The IKOM Bau, the third career fair, concentrates on the fields of
Architecture and Civil Engineering. It is held every year in January.
A team with over 90 students stands behind the IKOM. The IKOM is a
non-profit organization and was founded in 1989.

Enel is Italy's largest power company and Europe's second-largest utility for installed

BUSINESS OVERVIEW
Enel is also the second-largest Italian distributor and vendor of natural gas, with over 2.3

solar and biomass) across the world, Enel is a world leader in the sector.
In December 2006, Enel launched a five-year plan (2007-2011) for the development of
renewable energy sources and for research and development of new environmentally
friendly technologies with an overall investment of 4.1 billion euros.

The European Research Council (ERC) is a newly-created European funding initiative, designed
to support the best scientists, engineers and scholars in Europe.
The ERC's mandate is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive
funding and to support investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of research, on the
basis of scientific excellence.
The ERC, which is established by the European Commission and funded through the EU’s
Seventh Research Framework Programme with a budget of € 7.51 bn for 7 years (2007-2013),
complements other funding schemes in Europe, such as those of research funding agencies
operating at the national level and those within the EU’s Seventh Research Framework
Programme.
The ERC consists of a Scientific Council and a Dedicated Implementation Structure. It operates
under conditions of autonomy and integrity, guaranteed by the European Commission, to which it
is accountable.
ERC Grant Schemes
What kinds of ERC grants are available?
Two types of ERC grants are available to support researchers in carrying out frontier research
projects:
ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant)
The ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant) aims to provide adequate
support to researchers at the stage at which they are intending to establish or have already
established an independent research team or, depending on the field, developing an independent
research programme. Researchers applying for an ERC Starting Grant must be able to
demonstrate their potential to perform world-class research.
ERC Starting Grants allow the most promising (young) investigators to make the transition from
working under a supervisor to an independent research leader at an early stage in their research
career.
The ERC Starting Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to 2.0 million for a
five-year grant.
ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant)
The ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant) aims to encourage and support
excellent, innovative and investigator-initiated research projects carried out by leading
investigators. This funding scheme complements the ERC Starting Grant scheme by targeting
researchers who have already established themselves as being independent research leaders in
their own right.
ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders in science, engineering
and scholarship to pursue frontier research of their choice.
The ERC Advanced Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to €3.5 million for a

The CharitÈ in the 21st Century
The “Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin” is the

unified medical school and hospital of the Free
University and Humboldt University in Berlin.
The Charité has grown steadily in the course of its
almost 300-year history, but never as rapidly as in
2003, when the medical faculty of the Humboldt
University, consisting of the old Charité in Berlin-
Mitte, the Rudolf-Virchow University Hospital in
Berlin-Wedding, and the clinical research depart-
ments in Berlin-Buch, was merged with the medical
faculty of the Free University, consisting of the
Benjamin Franklin University Hospital in Berlin-
Steglitz. This fusion created the largest school of medicine and university hospital
system in Europe.
The “new” Charité accepts the responsibility to serve as a creative motor for the
life sciences and as a beacon for a knowledge-based society. All research
results, applications and inventions in the life sciences directly or indirectly affect
people’s lives, contributes to their recovery from disease and promote their well-
being. We will always strive to contribute to new discoveries and to be true to our
traditional mission, “Excellence in Education, Research, Healing, and Helping”.
The high ranking of the Charité in German medical research and education will
be further strengthened by the creation of new research priorities.
Existing networks with regional and national research institutions are being
intensified and cooperation efforts are being strengthened with industrial partners
from the pharmaceutical industry, from biotechnology, bioinformatics, medical
technology, and health care services at the national and international level.
For the six million inhabitants of Berlin and Brandenburg, the new Charité is the
only institution combining biomedical research, university-level teaching, and

Integrative Neuroscience – understanding how the brain functions

Integrative neuroscience aims to elucidate the neuronal underpinnings of a wide spectrum of brain functions which
allow humans and animals to operate successfully in natural environments and ensure their survival. The Tübingen
neuroscience community which comprises the CIN will intensify its efforts toward the quest for understanding how
the brain generates functions such as perception, memory, communication and action. A more comprehensive
understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying these functions and their disturbances – from their genetic basis
to the processing of information in neuronal networks – will lead to the development of new approaches that bring
promise to help patients with sensory and brain disease. Moreover, it will stimulate the development of improved
biomedical instrumentation and brain-inspired engineering solutions.
Graduate Training Centre for Neuroscience

In the CIN, graduate training will play a key role. Two graduate schools, each with a distinct neuroscience focus,
will provide research oriented training for masters and doctoral students within an excellent research environment.
Numerous masters, doctoral and postdoctoral positions will be available shortly.

The Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of
France is a multidisciplinary team of 36 faculty members, senior
researchers and staff scientists under the leadership of a science
counselor who reports directly to the Ambassador.
The Office is distributed between headquarters at the French Embassy

The action of the Office for Science and Technology is strongly

coordinated with other diplomatic offices, such as the Trade Department

The Institut Pasteur is a private, nonprofit research institution, established in 1888
after Louis Pasteur’s discovery of the rabies prophylaxis. Located in the heart of
Paris, France, the Institut Pasteur is devoted to biomedical research, including

The three-year study programs, taught in English, are aimed at post-graduates in Medicine,
Veterinary Medicine as well as those from Life Science fields. The PhD program
“Regenerative Sciences” is also open to students from the various disciplines of Materials
Sciences. As well as working on a 3-year research project, students also attend seminars, lab
and soft-skill courses, congresses, symposiums and summer schools. Successful candidates
will finish with a PhD, alternatively Dr. rer. nat. Scholarships are to be fully funded by the
DFG (Excellence Initiative), MHH, partner institutes and their respective departments.
We are looking for highly-motivated candidates who have an active interest in one of the
fields associated with one or more of the programs on offer. Excellent written and spoken
English skills are required. With nearly two thirds of our students coming from outside
