Key Ideas and Details

1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Define:
key details in a text- chief; major; important; essential; fundamental; pivotal

Student friendly:
I can ask and answer questions about the main ideas in a story.

2. Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central
message or lesson

Define:
retell- to relate (a story, etc) again or differently
demonstrate understanding- to describe, explain, or illustrate by examples
central message- main, principal, or chief; most important

Student friendly:
I can tell a story I have read and explain the most important parts of it.

3. Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

Define:
describe- to state or set forth the meaning of
characters- a person represented in a story
setting- the surroundings or environment of anything
major events- great, as in rank or importance; something that happens or is regarded as happening; an
occurrence

Student friendly:
After listening to a story, I can tell my teacher about the people in the story; where the story takes
place, and describe important things that happen in the story.

Define:

appeal to the senses-to be especially attractive, pleasing, interesting, or enjoyable

I can pick out words or groups of words in stories or poems that remind me of feelings that I have.

5. Explain major differences between books that tell stories & books that give information,
drawing on a wide reading of a range of text types.

Define:
explain- to make plain or clear; render understandable or intelligible
major differences- the degree to which one person or thing differs from another

After reading many books that tell stories and books that give information, I can tell my teacher

Define:
describe- to state or set forth the meaning of
connection- association; relationship

I can explain how two people, events or ideas in a book go together.

Define:

help find out.
