Brain Drain IN INDIA
What is Brain Drain?
In easy words, we can say that “shifting of brain from
our nation to another nation.”

“This is the picture which define the word “Brain Drain”

it self”

IN other words;
A brain drain or human capital flight is an emigration of trained
and talented individuals (“human capital“) to other nations or
jurisdictions, due to conflicts, lack of opportunity, or health
hazards where they are living.

And, as is clear from this definition, brain drain is a word with a

bad connotation. So, it is no wonder that we hear our politicians,
statesmen and intellectuals often mourning brain drain.

Here is my Ideal Person the former President of India, Dr.

Abdul Kalam on reversing brain drain:
President A P J
Abdul Kalam announced the government would encourage a
”reverse brain drain” to attract some of the brightest and
talented children of India and ensure their return to their
motherland.

Addressing a joint sitting of Parliament, he appealed to the

overseas Indians to engage more actively in India’s development.
Other Views;
A brain drain is a large emigration of individuals
with the Knowledge or Technical skills, usually due to conflict,
political instability, lack of opportunity, or health risks.

“A brain drain is generally regarded as an economic cost, because

emigrants usually take with them the fraction of value of their
teaching sponsored by government.”

Brain drain, regularly known as a main problem in our country is

essentially a bad thing.

What is the root cause of Brain Drain?

I have always questioned the idea of working for other countries,

and have been thinking about 'Brain Drain' issue for quite
sometime now. Giving it a deeper thought, I figured out that it is
not an issue, it is an Escape; Escape from a system which claims
to be clean and clear but is hollow from inside, which claims to be
promoting Youth and Future India but is actually hindering the
growth of very basic quality of leadership among them. I realized
that most of the people don't care about whom they are working
for or why they are working for them. They work for a peaceful
and happy life where they can live with Self-respect and enjoy a
free life. If you look at the present scenario, people are not
crazy about America; they are crazy about the quality of life
there. American economy (for example) doesn't ask its citizens to
work for their companies only or live in the country; they just
provide a clean, independant and accountable system where a
common man can sit, relax and enjoy. They preach Freedom,
Liberty and Independence and even though we preach the same,
we just ignore to provide the freedom of self-respect to a
common man. Common man can't defend himself if a powerful man
goes against him, his family or his life.
If looking closely to the problem of corruption at the lowest
level, in US, there is a system of tipping and people who earn less
are tipped and hence they don't need to ask for bribes. Why
can't we look for similar solutions? Why are we always asked for
bribes? Why only licenses issued easily to powerful people and a
common man has to fight it out? Why are we supposed to pay
bribes for each and every government work? Issue is
Accountability, Issue is ill use of power, Issue is Bol Bacchan
Amitabh Bacchan... Leaders say tones of things but the very basic
problem of ill treatment of common man is not targeted by
anyone.
If you look at the issue of Brain Drain closely, it is not that
people are betrayers of the country if they work for foreign
companies or go to foreign countries to work. They want to live
with self-respect and they don't want to see all this mess lying
here. Law of the land is to protect yourself and your Family and
provide them a good quality of life. Law and Order in India is
forcing all those who can ESCAPE, to escape from the system. If
you have lived in this country, you must have seen lines of people
around MLAs, MPs, and Ministers and if you want to lead a good
quality of life, you ought to know these people.
Here arises the problem. In good colleges like IITs and IIMs,
students are taught to be the best in whichever field they enter
but when they enter the world; they see the power lingering
around the politicians and messy Law and Order situation. It is
the loop hole in our economy which is forcing this talent to leave
the country and American politicians are smart enough to attract
this talent.
Seeing all this situation in the country, the reflex action is to
escape, escape to a place where common man can dream, live and
has accountability if something wrong is done. Practically
speaking, there is no such place but some places are better if Law
and Order situation is compared.
Some scenarios commonly seen which force me to think to escape;
you are going with your sister and you hear a comment or you hear
abusive words. You are robbed on a street and you go to police
station for help, but you are blamed for everything. Your son is
missing and you are a common man. You are asked for money for a
driving license even if you satisfy all the criteria’s. If you think
about these situations closely, not everyone would like to go and
fight, but every powerful man will say; dare someone say or do
this thing to me. This country is great for Powerful leaders,
Politicians, Collectors, SPs, renowned Doctors but no one cares
about the common man. Even if I am at a good post, I can't see a
common man treated like that and so my reflex action is to go for
a free land or to do something to change law and order situation
of this land.
Brain Drain situation is there because those who can just escape.
I think 75% population, if given chance will escape this system,
not for money but for a better life. And, the remaining 25% are
those people who have power and need common man to show that
power. I am not saying that corruption is there in India only; all I
am saying is that in this country common man is ill-treated.
We all think about the ways to solve the problems existing in the
country. I have always believed that generating employment,
opening new sectors and streamlining the system can solve the
problems. For most of these is required to retain the brains of
this country to remain in the country and work for it. To tell you
the truth, seeing the current Law and Order situation in India,
sometimes I feel like living in a developed country. If you want to
retain the Youth then you ought to give them respect and make
leaders out of them and not coward, scary followers of this
frustrating system. All that is needed is accountability if
something wrong is done anywhere in the system.
Exploding the Myths

Developing countries are exaggerating their costs

Brain drain constitutes

INDIAN CONDITION

India: 4.3% of its graduates

(9.3% Engg, 4.8% medicine, 3.5% natural sciences)
But 60% IIT graduates

OTHER COUNTRIES

• Ghana: 47%
• Guyana: 89%
• Haiti: 80%
• Central America/Caribbean: > 50%
• Surveys: Uganda: 31% primary school children want to
Migrate
“These are not small numbers.”

Problem is not small

Main problem is that 80% of the youth want to go to the Abroad
in future.
India: 79 of the foreign Ph.D. holders in Science & Technology
live in USA.
India spends foreign exchange $1 billion every year on students
going abroad
India loses $ 2 billion a year (HDR 2001)
My views on Brain Drain

According to me;-
This is the time of globalization, where we
are thinking about our own growth in comparison to the other
countries of the world and that’s why we are going to be so much
depend on the western countries.
We are Indians, so we have such duties or obligations towards our
own country, where we took birth.

Why other countries want to get Indian employees?

They want us because there are three
things which we have in our own self more than any one

1) Laborious
2) Dedication towards the work,
3) Skillful developed minds with new invention.

Just we talk about “America”

Why they are setting their industries in India?
Because they want to
utilize their 24 hours full time. We have 13 hours difference in
timing. “When they work in America we sleep and when we work
for them in India they sleep and just because of this type of
schedule they are getting benefit from their whole 24 hours.”

A director of U.S. Company said that “we want Indians because

they are more laborious than us and they don’t work according to
time and work only for money.”
Some person, those are mile stones in reverse
of Brain Drain

• Mr. Anand Kumar;- He was a student of IIT Bombay and

after that IIM Ahemdabad. A package of 1.9 crore per annum
has given to him by a U.S. company but this person refused to
take it and said that I want to some thing my own for my own
country and now he is running the best institute for IIT JEE
in Bihar named by “Super 30.” There is no procedure of fees.
His all 30 poor students always got selection in IIT JEE. IN
2010 he took challenge for selection of 200 students and
waiting for result…

• Mr. R.Madhavan:- He was a student of IIM Ahemdabad. A

package of 2.0 crore per annum has given to him by a company
of Brusail but he refused and starts his Tiffin business and
now his monthly income is 3000000 per month in India.

• Mr. V.S.Yadav;- He was a student of IIM Bangalore and a

package of 1.75 crore has given to him but he refused to take
it and start his business of vegetables production . After
struggle of some years he got a lot of success and become
the highest producer of vegetables.

This is the picture which shows our aim towards the reverse of
Brain Drain.
