cDebate over whether or not there should be a World¶s Fair during the Great Depression
c
cAlthough the world was experiencing hard times, it was decided that there would be not
only one, but two World¶s Fairs during the Great Depression, and it was one of the greatest
decisions made for the people of the world in those difficult times.

³1933 Chicago World¶s Fair.´ ë . Web. 19 Jan 2011. <http://www.flikr.com/photos/x-
ray_delta_one/49915164686/>.

This photo/social networking site lets photographers and photography lovers share their
work and give and receive feedback. I found a collection of photos of/relating to the 1933
Chicago World¶s Fair which gave me some new insight to my research and let me see things a
little differently. I used these pictures to their full extent.

³1933 Chicago World¶s Fair Posters.´ r . Web. 18 Jan 2011.

This website is actually a website that was meant to buy and sell old vintage posters. It
was, however, the only website I could find in time that included more than one example of a
poster advertising the 1933 Chicago World¶s Fair. Despite the fact that it wasn¶t a legit photo
gallery that included good, thorough information about the posters, I was still happy I could look
through the old posters and get a sense of what attracted people to that World¶s Fair despite the
tough times around them. I did enjoy being able to look at the posters and was able to get some
information from the pictures that included the prices and themes that were presented at the
event.

³Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943.´ 2 . Web. 24 Jan 2011.
1943/2363/>.

The photos from this website would have to be some of my favorites ones that I had
come across while researching. There were not many color photos taken during the Depression,
and this collection of some was really amazing. It let me see the time of the Depression from all
over the world and through a different pair of eyes, for me, it made the Depression seem more
real, and put me in a position where I could really imagine what the people living during that
time were dealing with and what sort of hope they had. I would definitely recommend this source
to anyone with an interest in my topic.

³Chicago World¶s Fair.´ D . N. p., n.d. Web. 24Jan 2011.

This website led me to another collection of vintage posters advertising events and such
for the 1933 Chicago World¶s Fair. There were different posters that gave me different ideas and
thoughts than what was in the other websites that contained other posters for the World¶s Fair. I
was happy to have found these pictures for they were very helpful with showing me how things
were done during that time and how the nervous excitement most likely affected the various
citizens around during that time.

³Future Vision: NY World¶s Fair 1939.´ ‰. Web. 8 Jan 2011.

I really enjoyed looking at this web page. It had a total of 35 pictures of the grounds of
the 1939 New York World¶s Fair. I thought that each picture was not only able to give me a
proper insight as to what that particular World¶s Fair was like, but also allowed me to see the
reactions of leaders and citizens who were captured unknowingly in the photos. The pictures
were a piece that let me from my own point of view of the early debate over whether or not that
event should have even existed, which, I think it definitely should have.

³Lechman Opens 1939 World¶s Fair.´ Î . Web. 8 Jan 2011.
fair>.

This is one of the most interesting sources I could find and use. It is an audio recording of
the first lines that Herbert Lechman (the Governor of New York in 1939) made to open the 1939
New York World¶s Fair alongside President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Actually being able to listen
to part of the speech was really neat and it also allowed me to hear the thoughts and words of the
leaders of the states during that time period which led me right to my topic of the debate over the
need for the World¶s Fair during that time. It is a very helpful and useful educational source that
I was happy to find.

³New York World Fair Posters.´ D . Web. 24 Jan 2011.
This website was very similar to the website which I had found that bought and sold
posters from the 1933 Chicago World¶s Fair. I had hoped to find a website that simply showed
posters in a gallery and had a bit of information on each, but I could only find the business sites.
I was able to get information out of this source and I did use quite a lot of it for my research, but
I had to be very careful while looking at it because some of the posters on the site were not for
the correct event that I was researching for (the 1939 New York World¶s Fair). Besides that issue
though, I found the site helpful to my project.

I used this website a great deal for my project. The pictures were very helpful and I was
happy that they were well captioned and gave great written information along with the visual. I
was happy that I found it and was able to use it and would definitely recommend it to anyone
with a similar topic as my own.

n.d. Web. 24 Jan 2011. http://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/wooda/chicago/cwf.html>.

Although this is a website that was made well after the 1933 Chicago World¶s Fair, I
consider it to be a very useful primary source due to the fact that the entire website consists of
postcards, pictures, and paintings that were recorded at the actual World¶s Fair. I found this
whole source quiet helpful as it gave me multiple visuals of what the event not only looked like,
but felt like and was like. I got plenty of insight from this website and would recommend it to
anyone doing research on my topic.

³1939 New York World¶s Fair.´

  . N.p., 2011. Web. 18 Jan 2011.

I found this webpage to be very helpful and saw that I was able to use almost all of the
information on it. The entire article is based on the 1939 New York World¶s Fair and went very
in-depth. It explored not only the grounds and themes of the Fair, which I was able to find in
many other sources, but it also gave me a thorough explanation of all of the planning, exhibits,
and zones that the entire Fair consisted of. I was able to get a lot out of this web page and I think
anyone else looking for information about my topic would be able to as well.

Duranti, Marco. ³Utopia, Nostalgia, and World War at the 1939-40 New York World¶s Fairs.´
SAGE Publications (2006): Print.
Duranti¶s article would have to be one of the most interesting sources I used for my
research. The author talked mostly about the multiple different themes that the New York
World¶s Fair seemed to revolve around. That particular World¶s Fair was caught in between a
traumatic past (The Great War), an unstable present (The Great Depression), and an uncertain
future (The possibility of a new World War). The entire article gave me a great insight to the
basis of the whole debate and explained to me the actual reason for a debate to arise over a
World¶s Fair at that point in time. I would definitely recommend it for use of research of any
kind related to my topic.

Web. 22 Jan 2011.

I found this web page very helpful with fulfilling me with a better knowledge of the way
the citizens of the world lived during the Great Depression. The articles I read on the page were
able to pass the thoughts and feeling that most people had during that time period so that I would
not only have a better understanding of the Great Depression as a whole, but also be able to
comprehend the debate over whether or not a World¶s Fair would be able to take place during
that time as well.

This entire website was extremely helpful to me and I was able to get a lot of information
from it. The website was all about the Great Depression, but was organized into different parts of
the entire 1930¶s and 40¶s. I was able to pull tabs about both the 1933 Chicago World¶s Fair and
the 1939 New York World¶s Fair as well as the thoughts from both leaders and citizens over the
debate of if the fairs should have or shouldn¶t have happened. It gave me a great insight and a lot
to base my project off of.

Schrenk, Lisa. ³Building a Century of Progress.´ n. pag. Web. 24
Jan 2011. <http://www.upress.umn.edu/Books/S/schrenk_building.html>.

I thought that this article was suitable for my research. I found another point of view of
the event of the 1933Chicago World¶s Fair. The only problem that I had with this source was that
although it had good information, there was not much of it. The entire article was only about two
paragraphs long, but it did have lots of material that I found was an advantage to have for my
project.
³U.S. Timeline-1930¶s.´ Î , americasbesthistory.com. 2009. Web. 22 Jan
2011. <http://americasbesthistory.com/abbtimeline1930.htm>.

This webpage offered me a timeline which I found somewhat helpful. Although I was
able to see the order of each event leading up to the 1933 Chicago World¶s Fair and 1939 New
York World¶s Fair and the events that came afterwards, there was only so much information they
could fit on each section of the timeline. I did find the information beneficial, and I will use it in
my research, I just wish that there would have been more of it and that it would have been more
in-depth.

³Welcome to Tomorrow.´ N.p., 2001. Web. 8 Jan 2011.

This website was a great source of good material that I needed for my research. It mostly
talked about the steps to the future that the 1939 New York World¶s Fair lead. Many people
actually did believe that it was going to bring a ³better tomorrow´. I would recommend this
source to anyone with an interest in my topic about the World¶s Fair during the Great
Depression.

This article, although from a not very well known magazine, is a great source of
information not only the Chicago World¶s Fair in 1933, but on a history of the World¶s Fair
completely. It gave me a wonderful background that I needed to better fully understand my
research and my topic.
