Step1: Baseline the existing state

Run the simulation 15 times

Step 2: Design a 2-level experiment using
Minitab
• Explain why you selected the
resolution you did.
• ( I would not recommend a
full factorial OR a resolution
III.)

Step 3: Run the DOE

Run 1 is with all

settings at -1

• If you selected a resolution IV you will have 16 runs

to complete. (In this case) Run 1 will require all
Control factors to be set to their minimum value.

2
Step 4: Analyze the data

• Add a column entitled “Response” and input

the value from each DOE simulation.

Step 4: Analyze the data

3
Step 5: Main effect plot

You’ll need to
enter the setup
page.

Step 6: Create System Model

relevant.

• From the session

window in
Minitab identify
the constant terms
for the relevant
parameters.

4
Step 6: Create System Model

• Under the tools menu Solver

• Select the target cell (what you want to maximize, minimize or solve
to a value).
• Select the cells which are independent (the cells that can change).
• List the constraints on the changing cells. (in this case all cells must
be between –1 and 1)
• Hint: Select coded units (1,0,-1)in Minitab and convert to actual
values later.

Step 7: Rerun the optimal setting

• Excel solver will
identify the ideal value
for each input X.
Rescale it from
-1 1 to the true range.
Enter this into the
simulation tool and
obtain the distribution
of the optimized value.

5
Commonly Asked Questions
• Are the CF in the assignment continuous?
– Yes, because the control factors are quantity
measurements as opposed to discrete items
– Once you have your optimal value in coded units (+1
and -1) then interpolate to get this into "real values"
(the numbers that fit into simulation).
– For example if you get A=-1 for the optimal soln then
convert this to A= 609.7

Helicopter Lab

Robust Design
Static Taguchi DOE

6
The Helicopter Lab

Learning Objectives:

– Develop a helicopter concept prototype

– Conduct a Robust Design DOE
– Two step optimization using an L9 array.

Materials
• Light weight paper (Provided)
• Heavy weight paper (Provided)
• Scissors (Bring 2 pairs per group)
• Stop watches (Bring 1 per group)

Creativity

7
The Voice of the Customer …
• A helicopter that will always rotate.
• The helicopter to stay in the air as long as possible
• Customers will use different paper types since a
common type of paper will not always be available
(noise).
• Due to time and cost constraints you must use an L9.

Develop your Control Factors & levels

• You must pick 4 Control Factors

– (To fit an L9 array).
• For each Control Factor you must select 3
levels.
• You may need to find creative ways to
include all contributing factors.

Watch out for Interacting Control

Factors!!!

8
Information about the L9 Array
• Columns 3 & 4 are confounded/aliased with
Columns 1 & 2!
• So if there are interactions between factors
in columns 1 & 2 they will be confounded
with the factors in columns 3 & 4 –
• What does this mean to you?

Noise Factors

Noise 1 Noise 2
Heavy Weight Light Weight
Paper Paper

9
What are the responses?
• Will always rotate
Minimum specified RPS

• Stay in the air as long as possible

 Maximize air time

Analyzing the Data

• Identify the Control Factors that will

maximize S/N

• Identify the Control Factors that will

shifting to target

10
Confirmation Experiment
• Using the optimized set points for your
Control Factors and with the mean shifted
to maximize flight time and S/N
• Check does your confirmation run match
your predicted run?

Pre-Lab Work:
Prior to the lab please hand in the following:
1. Various concept (Include as an appendix)
2. P-diagram
A comprehensive list of possible noises
A list of CP candidates
A list of possible responses.
Input type
3. A suggested approach to testing (full factorial, Taguchi matrix, etc…) along
with justification
4. A strategy to handle the noises (compounded, worst case noise, Taguchi,
etc…) along with justification. (1 page max)
5. Explore the various concepts (Create models and try out a few). You don’t
need to hand this in but you should have an idea of what you would like to
pursue once you begin the lab.
6. Bring the following: A ruler, pencil, scissors and a stopwatch.

YOU MUST TRY A FEW CONCEPTS BEFORE COMING!!!!
