This file contains information on installation of the Canoco for
Windows 4.5 package. The following topics are discussed:
1. Installation essentials
2. Installing on Windows NT platform
3. Installing on shared network drive
1. Installation essentials
--------------------------
The software can be installed only on a 32-bit Windows platform.
The installation program asks for a user name and institution and for
the license number provided with the software by the software dealer.
The Canoco for Windows software must be properly enrolled in the
Windows Registry and cannot be copied freely to other machines.
If you need to copy it (within the limits of your license), you
must use the installation program and the original
installation disks.
2. Installing on Windows NT platform
------------------------------------
If you are installing the Canoco for Windows 4.5 package on a computer
running the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 or Windows XP
operating systems, you must have appropriate user rights to enable
the installation program to create the Canoco home directory, copy
files into it, create the program group and setup registry. You must do
the installation from an account with administrative rights (typically,
you must be a member of the group Administrators). If you are not, the
installation program says so and installation is terminated.
Given the specifics of the Windows NT / 2000 / XP platforms and the fact
that your Canoco for Windows license is per processor, the installation is
done machine-wide and installed software is available to each user of the
machine.
Note however, that some users may not have write access to the file
systems and therefore cannot use the software.
If you need to restrict access to the package to selected user accounts,
you must setup the home directory on an NTFS partition and set
appropriate permission on the files in that directory.
3. Installing on a shared network drive
---------------------------------------
CANOCO FOR WINDOWS DOES NOT PROVIDE CUSTOMIZED
INSTALLATION FOR NETWORK ENVIRONMENTS. THE
SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR
TRANSFERING THE REGISTRY INFORMATION INTO
WINDOWS CONFIGURATION DIRECTORY OF INDIVIDUAL
USERS: WITHOUT DOING THAT, NEITHER Canoco NOR
CanoDraw PROGRAMS WOULD START!
INSTALLATION IN A SHARED NETWORKED (LAN) ENVIRONMENT
IS PERMITTED ONLY FOR THE SITE LICENSES OF THE
Canoco for Windows 4.5 PACKAGE!
When installing on a network drive (in Novell 3.x and 4.x environments,
for example), the installation directory is often not accessible for
writting by ordinary users. Canoco for Windows and the other programs
in the package use the current working directory as the implicit
destination for files without path specification. The installation
program creates a program group for the Canoco for Windows 4.5 package
and specifies the home directory of the package as the startup directory
for the installed programs (Canoco for Windows, command-line version
of Canoco, CanoDraw for Windows, CanoMerge, PrCoord, and WCanoImp).
Therefore, you must change this specification (contained in the Canoco
for Windows group of shortcuts) for the ordinary users. You also need to
set up appropriate sharing flags for the files contained in the home
directory, as required by your LAN platform.
Please note that the current working directory is also the place where many
of the programs expect to find their dynamic-link libraries (.DLL), help files
(.HLP and .CNT) and Tip-of-Day file (.TIP). Therefore, you must place these
files in a directory which is listed in the search path environmental variable.
To install/uninstall the Canoco for Windows package on a network drive, you
must have appropriate administrative rights.
