Redox Titration

By

Chan Kim and Jon Jon Lucente

Introduction

In this lab, the concentration if a hydrogen peroxide solution was determined by titrating

with a potassium permanganate solution of a known concentration. The potassium

permanganate solution, the deep purple colored solution, was added to the hydrogen

peroxide solution. It reacted by forming a colorless product until all the peroxide solution

was reacted. An additional drop of potassium permanganate was used to turn the whole

solution a pale pink, signaling the end of the titration.

Procedure

• A burette was cleaned with 5mL of potassium permanganate. This was repeated

two more times with 5 mL aliquots.

• A graduated cylinder was used to measure 20.00mL of hydrogen peroxide into a

clean 125mL Erlenmeyer flask.

• About 20mL of 3.0M sulfuric acid was added to the flask to make the solution

acidic.

• The burette was filled with the potassium permanganate solution and the initial

recording was recorded.

• The hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate was titrated, quickly at first

and dropwise towards the end.

• The final burette reading was recorded when the permanent pink color remained

in the flask.

• This process was repeated two more times.
