. Is your department/ school prepared to accept primary responsibility for providing appropriate supervision
and resourcing for this student? (Consider the number of postgraduate students already under the potential supervisor,
likely periods of study leave, any special resource needs, etc.)
. Given that the primary consideration in ranking candidates is their GPA, are there any special
circumstances that should be taken into consideration?

MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIPS
1. University of Canterbury Master’s Scholarships are tenable for study towards a Master's degree at the University
of Canterbury. The scholarships provide for a living allowance and tuition fees, each to a value determined by the
Council. (See Note i for their current value)
2. The scholarships are awarded, on application, by the Council on the recommendation of the Academic Board.
Application for a scholarship must be made to the Scholarships Office, University of Canterbury, on the approved
form no later than 5.00 pm on 15 May or 5.00 pm on 15 October.
3. a) To be eligible for a scholarship, an applicant must have met the academic requirements for enrolment in
the relevant thesis, dissertation, research project, creative work or performance by 10 December for
those who apply by 15 October, or by 17 July for those who apply by 15 May. (See Note ii for further
details of eligibility).
c) Candidates already holding a Master’s degree cannot apply for a Master’s Scholarship.
4. a) The scholarships are tenable only for the period in which the student is engaged solely on a single thesis,
dissertation or research project or in creative work or performance or in which such thesis, dissertation,
research project, creative work or performance comprises at least 0.75 EFTS in total.
b) The scholarship shall be tenable for the time it takes the student to complete 1.00 EFTS of the
course of study specified in Regulation 4a, subject to the student completing the Master’s degree within
the time limit specified in the degree regulations, and in the case of degrees where Honours or Distinction
may be awarded, within the time limit specified for the award of Honours or Distinction. (See Note v)
5. a) Every offer of a scholarship will lapse if it is not accepted in writing by 15 February in the year following
application for those who apply by 15 October, and by 30 September for those who apply by 15 May.
b) Every scholar must take up the scholarship by 31 March in the year following application,
if the student applied by 15 October, or by 30 October if the student applied by 15 May, although in
exceptional cases the Academic Board may extend these times by a period not exceeding six months.
6. Every scholar must comply with the regulations of the relevant Master's degree. (See Note iii)
7. If it is necessary for their research, scholars may, with the permission of the Academic Board, be permitted to
retain the emolument of the scholarship while carrying out research for limited periods outside the University of
Canterbury.
b) The first payment of the emolument will be made as soon as practicable after the scholar
has completed enrolment. In no case will payment commence before 1 January in the following year for
those who applied by 15 October or 1 August for those who applied by 15 May.
9. With the permission of the Academic Board, but not otherwise, a scholarship is tenable with any other
scholarship, bursary or award. In granting permission the Board may impose such conditions as it thinks fit, such
as reducing the emolument of the scholarship. (See Note iv)
10. A scholarship may be terminated or suspended by the Academic Board if it is not satisfied with the conduct or
progress of the scholar or if the scholar has failed to comply with any of the terms or conditions on which the
scholarship was awarded. The Board may in such a case require the scholar to refund a proportion of the
scholarship emolument.
11. The Academic Board may relax or modify the application of any of these regulations in special circumstances, or
in order to avoid hardship to a scholar.
Page 4
Notes:
i. The current emolument of a scholarship is NZ$12,000 per EFTS. In addition to this, the scholarship covers
tuition fees for the thesis enrolment at the New Zealand domestic rate for the minimum course completion
requirements (this will be equivalent to 1.00 (full time) or 0.65 (part time) EFTS over a year).
ii. By the relevant deadline in Regulation 3a:
All applicants must have received final confirmed grades for the qualifying degree
All applicants requiring admission ad eundem statum must have this admission confirmed
iii. In addition, for applicants who have completed the academic requirements but not the practical work
requirements for the BE(Hons) degree an offer of an award would be conditional on their subsequently
having those requirements completed and credited by the second Friday of the first semester in the year
following application (for those applying by 15 October), or by the second Friday of the second semester (for
those applying by 15 May). The regulations for the degree of Masters are published in the University
Calendar which is available at the University’s Libraries, College Administration Offices, or on the
University’s website
iv. Scholars are normally permitted to hold other awards without reduction in the emolument of the scholarship
if the value of the other awards (excluding grants to reimburse research-related expenses) does not exceed
50% of the emolument of the scholarship. If the value of other awards does exceed this limit the scholarship
will normally be reduced by the amount by which their net exceeds 50% of the scholarship emolument.
v. EFTS means “Equivalent Full Time Student” and 1.00 EFTS is equal to 1 year of standard full time study. A
part time thesis carries a course weighting of 0.65 EFTS. Therefore, a student enrolled for a part time thesis
only will have a scholarship tenure, paid pro-rata, of 18 months.

UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY
MASTERS SCHOLARSHIPS: SELECTION PROCESS
Regulations
The Regulations for the Award are enclosed with this application or may be downloaded
from www.canterbury.ac.nz/scholarships
Process
1. Each application is referred to the Programme Director and/or Head of the Department/School (HOD/S)
who are asked to confirm whether supervision and resources are available for the proposed research
topic.
2. Those applications which are supported by the Department are referred to the appropriate College which
considers and ranks those applications.
3. The applications, ranked by the Colleges, are forwarded to the Scholarships Committee, a subcommittee
of the Postgraduate Committee, which decides on the award of the scholarships.
4. Decisions of the Postgraduate Committee are subject to the right of appeal, but since academic merit is
the primary criterion in awarding a scholarship, appeals are unlikely to succeed unless the circumstances
are exceptional – for instance if there were errors in the student’s academic record.
2. In ranking applications supported by the HOD/S, Colleges are required to present the following
information:
v) In the case of scholarships reserved for particular Colleges, other evidence as approved by
the Postgraduate Committee.
It should be noted that non-academic criteria are not taken into account in the exercise of discretion.
2. a) The calculation will take no account of courses which are surplus to the requirements of the
qualifying degree (eg courses taken for interest or to acquire skills in a related field)
b) Provisional grades for work not finally marked will not be taken into account.
Page 6
4. The grade point average is calculated using a scale ranging from A+ (9) to E (-1). The experience of the
past few years has shown that a candidate with anything less than the equivalent of 1st Class Honours is
unlikely to be offered a scholarship.
