Letter from the Mayor
Dear friends and neighbors,
Charleston County has announced
the end to plastic leaf bags. Beginning
July 1, 2011, plastic bags for yard waste
will be banned. Presently, the yard waste
arriving at Bees Ferry Land Fill in plastic
bags has to be prohibited. Charleston
County personnel are currently removing
the plastic from the yard waste that is
composted, and this has proven to be labor
intensive and very costly. Once in effect,
it will be up to Folly Beach and other
municipalities to decide how to handle
the change. Using paper yard bags, which
can be purchased at home improvement
stores, will be more expensive and may
not work for several reasons. However, I
will keep you advised as to how Folly will
handle this change before the County’s
June 30 deadline.
I am proud to announce that the City
has a new Director of Public Safety, Chief
Dennis Brown. He comes to us from
Wilton, Maine, and is well qualified and
highly recommended. He served six years
as a police chief and one year as Director
of Public Safety, as well as served several
years as a policeman. He will be reporting
to work on around the first of April. The
City of Folly Beach is fortunate to have
a man of Chief Brown’s caliber. His
philosophy falls right in line with the
City’s regarding community policing.
Community policing is where the City of
Folly Beach is headed and Chief Brown,
with his experience in this area, will take
us there. I am planning a “meet and
greet” for Chief Brown when he is sworn
in as our new Director of Public Safety.
The City introduced Ordinance
No. 06-11 at its City Council meeting
of February 22, which caused some
heartburn for owners of rental property.
Even though it has my name as the
person who introduced the ordinance,
the ordinance was brought forth because
Title 40, Chapter 59, Section 40-59-
260 of the Code of Laws of South
Carolina mandates it. In other words,
municipalities have no say in these types
of ordinances. The ordinance requires
that a building permit be obtained for
all construction, new, remodeling, and
repairs, which includes docks, retaining-
walls, sea walls, fences, pools, and
septic tank installations and repairs. In
order to obtain a building permit, the
applicant must either be the owner of
the property or a South Carolina State

way this law can be modified is by our
delegation in Columbia, South Carolina.

I had the pleasure of attending a
gathering for one of our special senior
citizens, Mrs. Margaret Park Sheedy.
On February 15, Mrs. Sheedy celebrated
her 100th birthday. Over the years,
Mrs. Sheedy has contributed her time
as the organist for St. John the Baptist
Cathedral and until recently, she served
as the organist for Our Lady of Good
Counsel. She has performed at the
Gaillard Auditorium and the Dock Street
Theater, and also served as a volunteer for
the Red Cross, MUSC, St. Francis and
Roper Hospitals.
The City Administrator and I met
with Senator Campsen recently and were
delighted to hear that the TRAC proposal
is not going anywhere. Senator Campsen
feels there is too large a concentration
of individuals and agencies who oppose
TRAC’s proposal. However, he said he
would stay vigilant, as we will, and make
sure it is not brought forth at a different
time.
City Council will be holding work
sessions every month. If there is some
subject you would like to see discussed
at work sessions, please let me or one of

Folly Beach wants cruise lines
to account for ocean pollution
W
ith 67 cruise ship calls in
Charleston last year and 94
scheduled this year, concern
about the impacts of cruise pollution is
increasing. Several neighborhood and
quality of life groups in the area have
proposed local safeguards to protect the
community, but the City of Folly Beach
has officially stepped forward to be the
first municipality in Charleston County
asking visiting cruise lines to prove their
environmental commitments.
At the City’s January 25, 2011, council
meeting, members voted unanimously to
approve a resolution formally requesting
that cruise lines sign an agreement
verifying they will not dump pollutants
within twelve miles of Folly’s shore, and
they will provide the discharge logs to
prove it.
“It’s not about banning cruise business,
it’s about safeguarding Folly’s natural
resources and economic vitality,” asserts
Mayor Tim Goodwin. “It is our duty as a
municipality.”

effluent testing, and that they must wait
until three miles out before dumping raw

under voluntary standards more stringent
than current laws, there is no agency
charged with monitoring these self-
imposed limits, and no way to verify the
claims or be sure of what is discharged

I
n a recent press release, the City Council of Folly Beach publicly recognized
Chief Dennis Brown of Wilton, Maine, as their new Director of Public
Safety. This was one of several positions available in the department, and
should result in several key changes before the hectic summer. Chief Brown has
spent several years in law enforcement, and his training and experience make
him an ideal candidate for the job. His specialty areas include the capacity to
train/educate his officers, as well as instructing the residents of Folly Beach in
how to maintain order on the island.
Chief Brown started his career in 1996 in his hometown of Thomasville,
North Carolina, working out of the Thomasville Police Department. Shortly
thereafter, Brown worked for the very large Gilford County Police Department.
In Gilford, Brown worked as a patrol officer, provided field training for officers
and moved through the ranks from corporal, to detective to sergeant. Brown
also worked for the Gilford County Sherriff’s Department as a certified forensic
sexual assault detective.
His work later lead him to the community of Wilton, Maine, where he has
served as the Chief of Police for the Wilton Police Department starting in 2007.
“I have family in Turbeville, and we visited Folly Beach pretty frequently,”
said Brown. “I know the community and its citizens, and it is truly a privilege to
work on Folly Beach.”
Brown’s recent work in Wilton - a relatively small community - was very similar
to what is needed on Folly Beach. The department’s recent aims at Community
Oriented Policing are a very strong suit of Brown’s, as well.
“We as police officers and firefighters need to place a more focused effort on
involving citizens with the goals of the department,” said Brown, who would like
to work with island officers to find out what Folly citizens want and need, and
then work from there. Getting residents involved would also include transparency
between the department and citizens. Outreach programs and review panels are
already being discussed. Needless to say, Brown wants to operate his agency
under the “open door” policy.
Brown remarked that he likes small communities, mainly because the focus is
on family. As a group, Brown feels that the island can “make it through difficult
challenges,” and that the ultimate reward of his position is helping people.
Chief Brown will arrive on Folly Beach from Wilton near the end of March.
He plans to live on Folly Beach in order to assure citizens that he will be available
at all times. There are a few vacancies in his department, and his first goal
of business will be evaluating the hiring process. Brown wants to determine
whether the system is effective and in line with what the community needs. This
will be a necessity before the summer activity peaks.
Chief Brown’s years of field experience and administrative abilities will make
him an excellent asset to the Public Safety Department, and the island at large.
His passion, as well as his willingness to include citizens in the process, are sure
to make him a welcome new member of the Folly Beach community.

Dating Follies
My Generation
A
lot of talk is going on about bridging the gap
between generations, and a lot of thought has gone
into determining exactly what the differences are
and why they exist in the first place. Most have focused on
the professional implications of this gap, wondering how
to efficiently run a workplace with three and sometimes
four generations working together. I’m going to take a
step back from that and look at the broader picture by
cutting out a cross-section of Folly Islanders. I personally
lie on the cusp of generations X and Y depending on
which chart you use, but let’s generalize by saying those
who graduated high school between the years 1990 and
2000. I think it’s safe to say that those of us in that age
range make up a large portion of the weekend scene
around the island. As with any cross-section there is a
wide range of exceptions and variables, but there is often
a trend, as well.
There is a new term being thrown around - “emerging
adulthood” - that seems to bother many of those from the
older generations. The term was coined by Jeffery Arnett
in 2000 in an American Psychologist article; it refers to
a phase in life between adolescence and adulthood. But
what actually constitutes an adult? When can you consider
yourself fully grown? Is it financial independence, or
liberation from your parent’s rules? I have been reading
on websites such as NPR, the New York Times, and the
AP wire, that the average age of independence has risen
from 18 to 24 in the last decade, and I think our mindset
really reflects this. In the 1960s, your job was who you
were, be it a factory worker, a CEO, or a salesman. Now
your job is only a tiny piece of the much bigger picture of
what you consider to be “yourself”. Earlier generations
were coming of age in a time of an economic revolution,
the draft, the emergence of the Wall St. mentality, and
the idea of an “Edward Scissorhand-esque” suburbia. On
the other hand, our generation was the first to be raised in
daycare, to get trophies for 8th place, and to justify going
to school until the age of 25 without actually knowing
what we wanted to be when we grew up.
We were encouraged to enjoy our childhoods to the
fullest while they lasted, which is a far cry from the
priorities of our parents and grandparents who started
their careers by age 18. Maybe it was the blasé attitude
that came along with grunge music, baggy clothes, or
movies like Friday, Half-Baked, or anything by Kevin
Smith, which made partying and drugs an almost
natural thing to talk about or experience … and we
did. Partying harder than those before us was normal,
and taking time to travel around the country with your
favorite band was completely accepted. Making the
most of your youth is a great rule of thumb; however,
something seems to have happened to my generation. We
never really stopped. creating. We seem to not only know ourselves better,
I do not mean to say that we have not accomplished
our fair share. We may have taken our time to get there,
but once we did, we made our mark on the world. We are
doctors, teachers, lawyers, restaurateurs, business owners,
engineers, pharmacists, producers, and any number of
hundreds of other professional jobs. Yet, we can stay up
later, get wasted better, and still find vacation time to skip
off three states away to check out an awesome show. And
not only will we look better on our first day back to work,
but we will honestly feel more accomplished and content
with ourselves because of it. It’s almost as if the idea of
settling down and having a family doesn’t even cross our
minds until after 30, as opposed to grandma who got
married at 17 and is now celebrating her 65th wedding
anniversary.
Of course, there is no right or wrong answer. Life has a
way of opening different doors and windows to everyone,
and it seems that most of the people who have followed

their intuitions have ended up happy with their choices.
I think this extra decade of discovering the world and
finding ourselves has had a good overall effect on the
relationships and families that my generation is now
but we also know exactly what we want from life and our
partners, which in turn has led to some of the happiest
and most symbiotic relationships I have ever seen. At the
end of the day, I suppose I am proud of my generation.
We are tolerant global thinkers. We are pragmatic, street-
smart optimists. We are entrepreneurial, tenacious,
creative, adaptable, independent self-starters. We are
loyal, focused, ambitious innovators and survivors. We
have taken these 10 to 20 years after high school and we
have squeezed out every ounce of juice that life had to
offer. And if nothing else, I think it’s safe to say, for the
“Folly-ers” at least, that every one of us has either enjoyed
that juice to the very last drop, or thrown it in your face
while we pointed at you and laughed.

On March 5, while on vehicle patrol, an officer observed a grey Honda Accord parked

parking ticket when he noticed the two occupants of the vehicle asleep. Both were

was found to be the owner of the vehicle, and they said the car belonged to a friend
whose name they did not know. Both were allowed to call for a ride, and released

Hell Hath No Fury

An officer responded to an altercation at W. Ashley and W. 5th St. The victim said
that she was walking with a friend when the suspect approached them. The suspect
was an ex-girlfriend of the victim, and when the victim asked the suspect to leave
them alone, the suspect became violent and knocked her to the ground. The suspect
then kicked the victim in the mouth, causing “minor injury.” The suspect then left
the area and walked to the incident location of E. Erie and Center St. before calling
911 to report the incident. The victim was informed to get a
copy of the report if she wanted to press charges.

The Vandals
On March 5, an officer met with a complainant at 3rd St.
and E. Cooper regarding vandalism that had occurred to
his vehicle. The complainant reported to the officer that
he had come over to the island to “put up a girl he knew
and take her home.” He reported that when he started to
drive away, a male subject picked up a piece of the tree limb
and smashed the left rear taillight of his 1997 Ford Ranger.
Approximate cost of damage - $50.
The complainant was informed that if
he found out who the subject was that
vandalized his vehicle, he should contact
Public Safety. The Sheriff from Porky’s is

Anticipating the spring

he yowls and howls continue
through most of the night. In
and out of a fitful dream state, I
conclude that sleep deprivation counts
as torture. Begat from Moses and Israel,
our newest family member draws focus.

souls. From inside the crate, silence turns
to whines, whines turned into yips, yips
into scratching, clawing, and barking
fits. Fits finally resolve into melancholy,
full-throated Billie Holiday wails. Sleepy
eyebrows rise in amazement at such
vocalizations. At 5 a.m., we relent.
Risking puppy-tooth nose bites and
“accidental” discharges, Grace comes into
bed with us. Sleep follows.
Soon ,the sun peeks through the front-
beach palmettos, sending the day’s first
beams against the bay trees and vines.
A Cardinal broadcasts for a mate with
repeated long, descending whistles. The
days have become noticeably longer, and
the ocean’s temperature is warming. Near
Crosby’s bridge, pelicans actively feed
once again as surface schools re-enter the
estuary.
Spring energizes. Unfinished winter
projects become priority. My winter-
dormant boat trailer gets exercised
hauling “Tideline” from the water. The
paint-scaled boat top gets removed for
repair. Sanded and primed, bottom and
top receive one coat each of gloss white.
This morning the trailer gets even more
exercises, rolling “Tideline” to Oswald
Propeller for an aluminum rail welding
upgrade, hopefully completed before
Friday’s afternoon charter.
Migration and fledging season is also

beginning. I look for the signs. Last
spring, a pair of clumsy osprey chicks
turned our mini maritime forest back
yard into their fledging practice field.
Day after day, side by side, these two
youngsters would screech in dissonance
as they crash-landed on live oak branches.
Now gone, I wonder if either took up
residence on a frame of the water tower,
their suspected place of origin.
My first black skimmer sighting of
2010 occurred on March 24. As of
March 9, 2011, no skimmers have crossed
my eyes. Each spring, skimmers migrate
here from Florida and Central America.
Wood storks follow shortly thereafter,
some finding nesting grounds locally.
Soon, whimbrels and willets will join
resident oystercatchers on pluff mud
banks. Whimbrels pass through, resting
in our salt marshes before continuing
their trans-continental migration from
Alaska and Canada to Central and South
America.
Just like spring, Grace brings new life
in our home. This morning, 7-year-old
Springer Spaniel Zeke gave a stern
warning after enduring the ninety-ninth
flying puppy assault. Grace yelps and
makes a slobber-headed retreat to my feet.
Like most, Grace learns the hard way.
Now Grace is sleeping quietly. Her switch
turned off, she stores energy for another
moving foot ambush. Zeke sleeps, too.

Go find yourself
I
n the promotion of this film, I wish that someone would have brought up the fact
that this is not just a children’s film, but one just as fun and enjoyable for adults! I’m
glad that I found that out on my own.
Sunday morning came around and I headed out to one of my favorite theatres, the
Cinebarre, which is the only theatre that shows movies at 10 a.m. There I sat with one
kid in front of me and a few behind. The one in front lasted about 10 minutes, chucked
his sippy cup across the theatre and was quickly escorted out by his parents. However,
the story lies with the children and mom behind me.
I would like to thank the movie gods for blessing me with these kids who actually
had some sense of decorum. This doesn’t always happen while attending animated films.
The problem that they had as the film progressed was that they did not understand a
thing! Not the jokes, not the symbolism, practically no part of the film. They liked the
animation and some of the child-like things the actors would do, but after that, all they
had were questions. Mom did a great job of keeping the q & a session quiet and tried
her best to explain why the adult a few rows up was cracking up.
Rango pays homage to the spaghetti Westerns and greats like Mel Brooks’ Blazing
Saddles. I was so absorbed in the characters and plot that, as an audience member, I
found myself forgetting that the film was animated. Portrayed by the ever-wonderful
and brilliant Johnny Depp, Rango, whose real name we never learn, is a dreamer with
a vivid imagination. Rango spends his days in his glass enclosure, acting out his wildest
dreams with a headless Barbie and a wind-up fish, but a car accident soon brings Rango
more than he ever expected.
Lost and alone, he stumbles into a town where the water is quickly disappearing
and soon dons the guise of the straight-shooting and fearless Rango. Because of his
“reputation,” he is appointed the town’s sheriff and is on the hunt for the mysteriously
missing water. A gaggle of excellent actors support Rango in his efforts including Isla
Fisher, Alfred Molina, Ned Beatty, Bill Nighy, Abigail Breslin and Timothy Olyphant
(who I thought was Clint Eastwood and does a spot-on impersonation).
Along his journey, Rango cracks the case of the missing water, but discovers
something much more important; something he could never figure out on his own, but
with a little help from his new friends, he finds himself. Do yourself a favor. Put Rango
on your list of must sees. I am glad I did.

Greasy Combs and the Wax They Love
I
n an effort to gain traction, surfers
cover the decks of their boards with
wax. Surf wax comes in all kinds of
colors, smells, and densities. Its color
and scent is largely a matter of personal
preference, and can be used as a powerful
marketing tool. Practically every flavor
found in the popsicle freezer at Bert’s or
Piggly Wiggly has found its way into the
scent of surf wax. While there are many
colors of wax, most are white when applied
to your board. The exception is day-glo
wax, which is useful since the rider can
see if there is enough wax on his board at
a glance. People have also been known to
artistically apply this wax to their boards
before applying a clear coat on top.
In contrast to wax aromas, the density
of a surf wax is a functional element. If a
bar of wax is too hard, it will not provide
ample traction to an upright wave rider.
On the other hand, a wax that is too
soft will smear and flake off sooner than
a harder wax. For this reason, riders
will apply hard waxes for base coats and
summer use. As the seasons change and
the water dips in temperature, surfers
choose softer, less dense wax. It is
acceptable to apply a softer wax on top
of a harder wax, but not the other way
around. We are now nearing that time of
the year when we take off the old wax and
start with base coats and tropical wax. The
casual observer might wonder how this is
possible. Perhaps surfers simply buy new

Thankfully, a tool exists that effectively
takes wax off a board.
The natural counterpart to surf wax
is the wax comb. It is also known as the
deck rake, surf barber, or die wellenreiten
kamm. This tool looks like a hair comb
with thick bristles on one side and a
beveled edge on the other. It is used to
groom and remove wax from a surfboard.
Wax combs come in many different
colors including black, tan, yellow, pink,
and blue. The casual observer may
think that the color of one’s deck rake is

might choose to wear had no significance.
Do not be alarmed. Wax combs are not
related to gang allegiance, and no one
will be harmed – that is, if we all make
the effort to educate ourselves about wax
combs. The most popular color is black
and this comb says its bearer simply wants
to keep his or her wax looking good and
eventually remove it. The black comb is not
flashy and can be accidentally misplaced
in a messy car or similar environment.
Additionally, its popularity makes it the
easiest comb to steal from a friend. If
everyone has a black comb, why not get
yourself one more at a buddy’s expense?
A philosophical cousin of the black comb,
the tan comb, is a drab son of a gun that
can easily be lost in a garage or pile of
socks. However, its color looks a lot like
the wax that will soon cover it. This is
great for obsessive-compulsive people who
like their tools to look less used.
Some folks like to show off their
combs. For this reason, the day glo
yellow comb is also popular
on Folly Beach. This comb
is the easiest to find and
will turn back your clock

often choose this one because it is their
favorite color, but men who rock pink wax
combs have chosen it for another reason.
Some say these guys were born into an
alternative culture and others say it is a
lifestyle choice. These guys have lowdown,
vile thieves for friends. The owner of a
pink comb is saying, “You may steal my
comb but you will have to hide it from
me.” If you steal your buddies day-glo

The Marsh: A Folly Beach Mystery

Beach Mystery series pits familiar Folly Beach with the funeral of Mrs. Margaret Klein. Chris and

grateful to have a good home. I always sit right
under Mommy’s feet when she is cooking,
hoping she will drop something. I love singing.
I am even on YOUTUBE. I love ANY AND ALL FOOD! and I like to eat
it in under 20 seconds... People always say I set world records with how fast
I eat. I love just running around, not really going anywhere, just running in
circles mostly. The park is fun but it’s so big, I get a little nervous.

150 Years Ago: Recalling Charleston’s Civil War Past

he sesquicentennial of the Civil War is now
underway, and our barrier islands played a
critical role throughout a war whose first
shots rang out near our shores. Historian Paul
Hedden leads tours of war sites around James
Island, and offers us this ongoing look at the events
occurring 150 years ago. These correspondences are
taken from official transcripts and telegrams during
the conflict. Charleston.
 Just following Lincoln’s inauguration, Charleston
and the Confederacy begin the move to ensure their
political,  financial, and military independence.
March 3 - Pierre G. T. Beauregard arrives in
Charleston having been appointed by President
Davis to take command of the troops in the City.  Secessionville to Sullivan’s Island.
His lodgings are at the Charleston Hotel.
March 4 -   Abraham Lincoln is inaugurated two
weeks after Jefferson Davis’ inauguration. Lincoln
had arrived in Washington by a secret route to
avoid danger, and his movements were guarded by
General Winfield Scott’s soldiers. Ignoring advice to
the contrary, the President-elect rode with President
Buchanan in an open carriage to the Capitol, where
he took the oath of office on the East Portico. Chief
Justice Roger Taney administered the executive
oath for the seventh time.   principle of which is redeemable in 1868, 1870 and
Lincoln states that he has "no purpose, directly
or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of
slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have
no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination
to do so."  He closes his speech by stating: "We are
not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies.
Though passion may have strained, it must not break
our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory,
stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to
every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad
land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when
again touched, as surely they will be, by the better
angels of our nature.”

March 4 - Beauregard makes a preliminary
inspection of all Charleston harbor defenses.
March 4 - The National Ensign of the Confederate
States is formally adopted by the Confederate
Congress.
March 5 - The National Flag is displayed for the
first time from the cupola of the Custom House in
March 7 - The Sumter Guards, Montgomery
Guard, the Marion Artillery, Charleston Light
Dragoon and the Carolina Light Infantry are
busy drilling, meeting or being transferred from
March 8 - Governor Pickens issues a proclamation
establishing Martial Law over that portion of James
Island known as “Fort Johnson” and extending half
a mile from the wharf of the island.
March 8 - The State of South Carolina announces
a sale of $675,000 in Bonds, to be issued in $50,
$100 and $500 increments each. The Bonds pay
an interest rate of 7%, payable annually, the
1872.  The loan is to appeal to the patriotism of
the people.  The interest is large “and the Security
superior.”
March 9 - In the early morning, gunners were
firing blank cartridges from the guns of the Iron
Battalion at Cummings Point when one of the guns
was loaded with ball. The men of the Brigade, being
unaware of the fact, discharged the loaded gun
towards Fort Sumter.  The ball struck the wharf
of Fort Sumter, but no response was made. A boat
was sent to the Fort to explain the error to Major
Anderson, who accepted the explanation in "good
part" and the thus the matter was ended.

March 11 - ... a canoe…arrived at Fort Sumter
carrying a "negro boy" who heard that the new
president intended to free the slaves.  [Major
Anderson]…turned him over to the authorities in
Charleston. 
March 15 - POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT,
Washington, The PRESIDENT: SIR... I believe
that Fort Sumter may be provisioned and relieved
by Captain Fox with little risk, and General Scott’s
opinion that, with its war complement, there is no
force in South Carolina which can take it. This
renders it almost certain that it will not then be
attempted. This would … demoralize the rebellion.
The impotent rage of the rebels and the outburst of
patriotic feeling which would follow this achievement
would initiate a reactionary movement throughout the
South which would speedily overwhelm the traitors.
No expenses or care should therefore be spared to
achieve this success. …. very respectfully, your obedient

March 16 - Defenses on Morris Island Battery
at Cummings Point: No. 1. Battery of sand and
palmetto logs, four 24-pounders.  No. 2.   Iron-
clad battery, three guns, 42-pounders or 8-inch
columbiads. No. 3. Battery of sand and palmetto
logs, three guns, 24-pounders or 32-pounders. No.
4.  Battery of sand and palmetto logs, with one
8-inch columbiad or 8-inch sea-coast howitzer. No.
5. Star of the West battery, five guns, 24-pounders or
32-pounders. …. There were two guns at each round
fired from the light-house battery. Three or four more
guns were landed yesterday with barbette carriages,
and most of them were carried around upon the
channel side. One, at least, was placed in battery No.
4, making four guns in that battery at present.

W
ith spring quickly
approaching, sun-filled
days with temperatures
occasionally reaching into the 70s have
fishermen excited to hit the water. Best
of all, the bite is markedly improving as
warmer waters fill our fishery.
Having spent the last few months lying
low and avoiding dolphins, the redfish
are transitioning from preservation
mode to becoming predators once
again. With redfish still in big schools
consisting of hundreds of fish, the best
fishing will be at low tide when you can
sight cast to them. These fish are still
easily spooked, so stealth is of upmost
importance when approaching a school.
Oftentimes, it pays to anchor up when
you find a school and wait for them to
return to you instead of chasing them
down.
Once you are in casting range, jerk
shad lures rigged on flutter hooks are
my go-to option. These artificial lures,
usually 4”-5” in length, imitate small
baitfish. Flutter hooks have a weight
on their shank that lets you cast a far
distance and puts motion on the lure.
I use flutter hooks in size 3/0 with an
1/8oz. weight.  You’ll want to work

big schools of redfish often don’t want
anything to do with artificials. When
this happens, it’s time to soak some cut
bait. I’ll put chunks of frozen mullet on
size 3/0 circle hooks and just let it sit
on the bottom until the redfish swim
over it. Put your rod in the rod holder

and resist the urge to set the hook when
you see a fish begin to eat. The circle
hook will do all the work for you and
when your reel starts to sing, you are in
business.
It’s hard to have a stealthier approach
than with a fly rod. This is one of the times
of year for fly fishing as it can be a very
productive means of catching redfish. A
well-cast fly can land making only the
slightest splash. We are currently using
smaller flies, especially black and white/
chartreuse clouser minnows. When the
fish are finicky, you can wait until the
school is over your fly before you begin
your retrieve and often this will draw a
strike. See you on the water!
