the Windows preload environment, you do not need this package. This package is required when
you install Windows Operating Systems without the Product Recovery function. - This program
is based on the US version but, this is language independent and can be used with any language

* 1.WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES *
*****************************************************************************
This package contains following support modules. - To detect and configure the INTEL 845
chipset and 855 chipset The following ThinkPad computers are supported: - ThinkPad R40 -
ThinkPad R50(*1)/R50p(*1) - ThinkPad R51 (Machine Type 1829,1830,1831,1836,1840,1841)
(*1)(*2) - ThinkPad T40/T40p/T41/T41p/T42/T42p(*1) - ThinkPad X31/X32(*1) NOTES: -
(*1) Only Windows 2000/XP are supported. - (*2) Machine Types 2883, 2887, 2888, 2889, 2894
and 2895 of ThinkPad R51 family are not supported. Please get the package of Intel Chipset
Support III for them, and install it, as well. To determine if you should update the supplement
files, refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. To update the supplement files, refer to the

* 2. INSTALLING THE SOFTWERE IN INTERACTIVE MODE *
*****************************************************************************
Apply this program to enumerate INTEL chipset correctly after installing base operating system
with each supplement files. Installation : 1. Close any running applications. 2. Run the
InstallShield* installation program in INTELINF folder. Windows XP/2000: INFINST_autol.exe
Windows 98 SE: INFINST_autol.exe -a -USB2 3. You will be prompted to agree to the license
agreement. If you do not agree, the Installer will exit before extracting any files. 4. Follow the
on-screen instructions and use the default settings to complete the setup, once the operating
system has rebooted. 5. This completes the installation of the Intel(R) Chipset Software
Installation Utility.

* 3. INSTALLING THE SOFTWERE IN SILENT MODE *
*****************************************************************************
Unattended installation (common for Windows 98 SE/2000/XP): Run infinst_autol.exe with the
command line flags as follows. Windows XP/2000: INFINST_autol.exe -a -s Windows 98 SE:
INFINST_autol.exe -a -s -USB2
*****************************************************************************
* 4. INSTALLING THE INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION *
*****************************************************************************
How to extract Windows INF files prior to OS installation: 1. Click Start, then click Run. 2. Type
infinst_autol.exe -a -a -p C:\INTEL (for example ) in Open column. 3. Click [OK]. 4. Setup
Screen (INTEL Chipset Software Installation Utility V4.20.1009) appears. NOTE: This stage just
runs the installShield program and does not extract the INF and CAT files. 5. Click [Next] in
"Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for". 6. Click [Yes] to Accept License Agreement. 7. Click
[Next] at ReadMe Information screen. 8. Progress bar shows the extract status. After reaching
100%, the INF and CAT files have been extracted in C:\INTEL folder. 9. Check C:\INTEL
folder. 10. You can see "ICH-4" folder and others in C:\INTEL directory. 11. You can use the INF
and CAT files from the Win2000, Win98, Win98SE, XP folders for installation. 12. The
subdirectory that you want to use is C:\INTEL\ICH4\.

* 4A. INSTALLING THE WINDOWS 2000/XP INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION *
*****************************************************************************
Windows 2000/XP 1. Create the following directory structure under the <WINDOWS Setup
Directory>: \$OEM$\$$\INF 2. Copy the Windows INF files from the the following folder to the
directory created in Step 1 above. Windows 2000: C:\INTEL\ICH4\Win2000 Windows XP:
C:\INTEL\ICH4\XP 3. Create the following directory structure under the <WINDOWS Setup
Directory>: \$OEM$\$1\drivers\IntelINF 4. Copy the Windows INF files AND the catalog files
(.CAT) from the folder listed in step 2 to the directory created in Step 3 above. 5. Either modify
the default Windows installation answer file, UNATTEND.TXT, located in <WINDOWS Setup
Directory>, or create a customized answer file. The answer file must include the following
information: [Unattended] OemPreinstall = Yes OemPnPDriversPath="drivers\IntelINF" 6. Run
"WINNT.EXE /u:<answer file name> /s:<WINDOWS Setup Directory>" to install Windows.

* 4B. INSTALLING THE WINDOWS 98SE INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION *
*****************************************************************************
Windows 98 SE 1. Copy the Windows 98 Second Edition INF Files from
C:\INTEL\ICH4\Win98SE to Windows setup directory. 2. Depending on your <Windows Setup
Directory> content, there are two cases: Case A: CUSTOM.INF file is NOT present in the
<Windows Setup Directory> In this case, rename INFPRELO.INF to CUSTOM.INF. Case B:
CUSTOM.INF is present in the <Windows Setup Directory> In this case, incorporate the content
of INFPRELO.INF into the existing CUSTOM.INF file. 3. Run SETUP.EXE to install Windows.
