Certification of Pilot-Owner Maintenance

Dear Owner,

Some of your aircraft, engine and, where applicable, propeller log books (CAPs 398, 399 & 400
respectively) contain Air Navigation Order (ANO) release to service statements across the tops of the
pages referring to “Maintenance and Other Work carried out on the Aircraft”. Later versions of the
log books contain options in Column 8 to allow the appropriate certifications.

An EASA aircraft such of yours is subject to the requirements of Part M. With respect to the
maintenance accomplished on your aircraft, Part M requires a Certificate of Release to Service (CRS)
for maintenance accomplished by the pilot-owner or an approved maintenance organisation. When
maintenance is accomplished by ACS Engineering, certifying staff sign a CRS in accordance with Part
145. You will see the latter affixed to your log books after such maintenance.

When the pilot-owner completes a 50 check or other permissible maintenance, a Part M CRS must
be issued to certify the task, the wording for which appears below:

‘Certifies that the limited pilot-owner maintenance specified except as

otherwise specified was carried out in accordance with Part M and in respect
to that work the aircraft is considered ready for release to service’.

The excerpt below comes from Part M and specifies what you must record:
“The certificate of release to service shall be entered in the logbooks and contain basic details of the
maintenance carried out, the maintenance data used, the date on which that maintenance was
completed and the identity, the signature and pilot licence number of the pilot-owner issuing such a
certificate.”
Part M Appendix VIII lists the maintenance that a pilot may perform.

To make this a bit easier for you, we’ve produced a statement and certification entry that must be
affixed to the relevant pages of the log books. The statement is attached.
It is important to point out that uncertified (or unauthorised) maintenance invalidates the aircraft’s
Certificate of Airworthiness and it is important you certify only within the scope of pilot-owner
maintenance. With respect, you – not ACS Engineering - are legally responsible for the maintenance
you perform.

Below is a quick guide to completing your log book entries:
