Umra Guidelines

Rituals of Umra
In Arabic the word `Umrah is derived from I`timar which means a visit. However, `Umrah technically
means paying a visit to Ka`bah, performing Tawaf [Circumambulation] around it, walking between Safa and
Marwah seven times. A performer of `Umrah puts off his Ihram by having his hair shaved or cut.

Umra In Ramadan
 Hadeeth narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas , Prophet Muhammad, has said:

To parents :
1. Mention the need to put effort and put TAWAKKAL to Allah. This is important because we need to instill our
children from young that firstly planning and preparation is important. And more important is to give
tawakkal to Allah. For He is the one who will allow anything to happen. In His hands alone are the
success or otherwise of our plan. We pray that Allah will give the best to us.
2. Mention also the need to have ikhlas in whatever they need to do. Remind them that
niyah is only for Allah and our hope that He is please with us.

MEEQAT‫تاقيم‬
In Arabic it means a station or a place.
But when we talk about the ibadah Umrah or Hajj, it means a special place where you will make
your niyah for umrah or hajj.
You see for umrah, you need to make your niyah at special place. And if you miss this, your
umrah is invalid.
Who gives this rule?
Rasullullah said it in his hadith (Book of Hajj)
Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 26 :: Hadith 599
Narrated Ibn Abbas:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) made Dhul-Huiaifa as the Miqat for the people of Medina; Al-Juhfa for the people of Sham;
Qarn-al-Manazil for the people of Najd; and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen; and these Mawaqit are for the people
at those very places, and besides them for those who come thorough those places with the intention of performing
Hajj and 'Umra; and whoever is living within these boundaries can assume lhram from the place he starts, and the
people of Mecca can assume Ihram from Mecca.
Since we will travel by car to Mekkah from Qatar, which is considered as coming from Najd 1, we will stop
at this place called Qarn Un Manazil. Qarn un Manazil is after the town Taif. Qarn Un Manazil is our
meeqat. It is about 75km from Makkah.

What should I do at the meeqat?

Now that you know what meeqat is, you must know what you are supposed to do there.
Do as the sunnahs
1. You will take the special bath there.
2. You will put on perfume (for boys only) before you put on the ihram garment
3. Cut your nails
4. If you have armpit hair, it is sunnah to remove them
5. If you have pubic hair it is sunnah to remove them also.
For girls, the ihram garment is the normal prayer clothes that you wear. Care must be taken that it should
not be transparent nor tight. Nor should it be too short and not covering your chest.

For boys, you will be wearing extra special. Ask

ayah to help you with the ihram garment.
Make sure it is fasten properly. We don’t want
it to drop. *Blush*
If it drops during the tawaf, or part of your awrah is shown, quickly have it covered. If you delay it, then
that turn is consider invalid and you must repeat that round.

FORBIDDEN THINGS IN IHRAM

After you make niyah for umrah, you will be in a state of ihram. And being in a state of ihram means, there
are things that you cannot do. There are also things that you must complete doing.
Before we discuss what we cannot do, we must know that once you say the niyah for umrah,
you must complete all the umrah rites. Pray to Allah that it is made easier for you.
The things that you cannot do while in ihram are
1. Cutting your hair
2. Cutting your nails

Apply perfume on body/ clothes

4. Killing or hunting
5. Marrying or asking someone to marry
6. Wearing a cap (for man)
7. Wearing seamed garment (for men) meaning no wearing socks nor spender
8. Covering face for woman
9. Wearing gloves for woman
10. Don’t pull out any plants, flowers or leaves (this apply all the time in Makkah)
