One Week Later
A personal perspective on the Japan crisis

situation over here, and thought this would be the best way to
summarize where things are as of now…
First of all, my wife and I would like to thank each and
every one of you for your kind words of concern, and for
keeping us in your thoughts and prayers over the past week.
Last Friday’s earthquake was terrifying for us living here
in Tokyo, but the fear we experienced that afternoon, and
the inconveniences we still experience to this day are trivial
compared to what the people of northeastern Honshu have gone we’re seeing “a ray of hope.”

everything’s fine and that the situation at the power plant is
under control, with radioactive contamination confined to
the immediate vicinity. But as we also know, events are still
extremely fluid and the reality is that things could still go
either way. Having said that, I remain cautiously optimistic
that the technicians up there will resolve the crisis—although
it will take time. Meanwhile, we continue to gather as much
information as we can from a variety of sources to understand
the situation there and what it means for us here, re-evaluating levels looked like there or anywhere else.

Women’s History Month
President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation
in 1980, calling on the American people to remember the
contributions of women to our great nation. Only 14 governors
had declared March as Women’s History Month in 1987, but
that same year, Congress and the president declared March as
National Women’s History Month to recognize the important
contributions women have made throughout history. This
year’s theme is “Our History, Our Strength,” and this annual
observance allows us to consider the vital role women have
played through the course of our history since this nation’s
inception.
Over the years, caregivers of veterans and women
who have worn a military uniform themselves have found
inspiration in the achievements of those women who have
gone before them. During the Civil War, Clara Barton
braved danger repeatedly to aid and comfort the wounded.
She gathered her own medical supplies, gained permission
to transport those supplies to the battlefield and to ride
in Army ambulances. She faced obstacles, had to obtain
special approval to travel to the frontlines, but she ushered
in a new profession: nursing battle wounded. Undaunted,
Barton continued breaking through barriers after the war
ended, directing a multi-year search for missing servicemen,
promoting women’s suffrage, and founding and leading the
American Red Cross. After her death, her final “first” came
when her Maryland home became a first-ever national historic
site dedicated to the accomplishments of women.
Women have been playing an essential role in the United
States Army since 1776 and the percentage of women in the
military has doubled in the last 30 years. As of 2009 more than
350,000 women were serving in the Armed Forces, assuming
leadership roles and responsibilities impossible for them to
attain 20 or 30 years ago. In modern wars, particularly in Iraq
and Afghanistan, there no longer is a frontline, and women

read an article this morning that said
experts from the IAEA (International
Atomic Energy Agency) say that the
situation has not deteriorated in the past
24 hours, but it’s still premature to say

woods yet. But I also want to stress that the Fukushima Daiichi
power plant is about 150 miles from Tokyo. Radiation levels
microsieverts per hour (that’s 0.04 rad), but as of this morning

we can take some solace in this.
The Japanese authorities didn’t do a very good job of
communicating all this in the first days of the disaster. This
is beginning to change, but it is part of the reason for the

rampant. And while people on TV kept telling us all was safe
outside of the 30 kilometer zone around the facility, for a while
it has been difficult to attain information on what radiation

So what does this mean for
us living in Tokyo? Official
measurements are released
twice a day now, and anyone
can download them and see
hour by hour what the situation
looks like for the past 24 hours.
I took a look at the figures this
morning, and for Tokyo, we
were at about 0.05 microsieverts
per hour yesterday on average.

the task. As of Feb. 1, 2011, 137 service women have died in
defense of our nation since 9/11.
National Women’s History Month is an ideal time to
renew our historic commitment to the nation’s veterans and
particularly to our women warriors who often don’t consider
themselves veterans, or who traditionally put the needs of their
children and family before their own. An increasing number
of women nowadays who return home from military duty as
combat veterans return to their roles as wives and mothers.
Their needs are complex and sometimes different from those
who served and deployed before them; and they challenge us
in VA (Veterans Administration) to do things differently to
meet those needs.
At the VA Maryland Health Care System, we offer our
women warriors a full spectrum of services, including breast
and cervical cancer screenings, gynecological evaluation and
treatment, and in-house mammography and bone density
screens. Constantly adding and improving services, we
recently began offering the human papilloma virus vaccine
to our younger women veterans. We currently have fourteen
women’s health care providers and two surgeons who provide
gender specific care to our women veterans, with plans to
expand this number. Eight of our nine locations, which include
our six community based outpatient clinics, offer gender-
specific providers and services. Gender specific services such
as maternity care and pelvic oncologic surgical care that are
not available from VA can be outsourced to local providers.
There are approximately 484,013 veterans in Maryland,
of which 47,276 are female (less than 10 percent). There
are 73,266 women veterans in the VA Capitol Health Care
Network, which includes Maryland, Virginia and Washington,
D.C., but only 5,000 women in Maryland have enrolled for VA
health care. Women veterans, where are you?

In my part of town (Tama-shi, Western Tokyo), I’m
fortunate enough to have a physicist who lives nearby, and he
has a website on which he posts radiation levels at his home
every 10 minutes. According to Dr. Ichikawa’s site, this part
of town is currently at 0.18, about the same level as typical
background radiation around here.
To put all these numbers in perspective, exposures of 10
millisieverts or more per hour correspond to a CT scan, so
this means things around the plant are still quite bad, but the
situation (for now at least) are still quite localized.
So for now, we do not appear to be in harm’s way, but
embassies of several countries have asked their nationals to
consider leaving. I received an e-mail from the US Embassy
yesterday offering to take me and my wife to either Seoul or
Taipei so I can arrange for passage to the US. I know of people
who have taken the offers or have already left. I have to admit,
it’s somewhat disconcerting to get a notice like that, and see
people around you taking off for the hills. But I intend to ride
this out. I love this place, and have spent half of my life – and
nearly all of my adult life – living here. It’s hard to think of
turning your back on a place and its people when they are
facing their darkest hours in memory.
Having said that, we will continue to remain vigilant and
follow developments. We will keep our heads up and our spirits
upbeat. And we will reach out to our friends and neighbors here
in Japan, and to our extended family and friends elsewhere
to get to the other side of this terrible tragedy. I think Japan
has some tough days ahead of it, but I’ve never seen a people
face adversity with such civility and concern for one another,
and the blackouts, train stoppages and shortages for items like
bread and gasoline are nothing compared to what the people up
north are facing now. Snow is falling, hundreds of thousands
of people are displaced, and people in the vicinity of the power
plant are quite literally forced to deal with two crises at once.
… For now, please think about what you can do from there
to help the people in the north. I am sure aid agencies are
starting to organize now so please find out what you can and
try and help. Rebuilding that area is going to be a monumental
task and I think this nation will rise to the challenge, but it will
require a lot of support.

she said. “Although, you still have the

“If you want to go to a movie or see a band, there’s no one to go with because your
friends are married and there’s no one available,” she explained. “It’s not fun going out
alone.”
So, instead, the realtor joined an online community allowing her to create her own
social gatherings with people her own age.
“It’s rewarding for me because it has given me friendships that otherwise I wouldn’t
have and a few dates I wouldn’t have,” said Hesham. “It’s a non-threatening way for us
to get together in a social arena as a group.”
One of the latest trends for people living out their golden years is meeting people
online to find companionship and even love. Online members of Meetup.com enjoy
going to the movies, game nights at members’ houses, potluck dinners, skating rinks,
dancing, and even weekend trips to New York City. Hesham is one of 1,092 members,
all ages 40-55+, in the “Annapolis Area Social Meet Up Group.” And there are many
more websites helping seniors find friends and love such as LavalifePRIME, Senior
Friendfinder and SeniorMatch.com.
“When we were in seventh, eighth or ninth grade, we used to go out in bunches in the
mall,” said Hesham. “Now, it’s the same sort of comfort zone.”
A Meetup.com organizer, Hesham also said that many of her members find love,
with nearly 25 percent of the group eventually dating and becoming a couple. Still, not
everyone is looking for love. Many simply want friends to explore the city and discover
the latest in entertainment. “They’re happier. They have a life now,” Hersham said of
her Meetup.com members.
Meeting like-minded people online is just one of the many tools that seniors and
mature adults are utilizing to find love, fun and friendship during their later years.
Seniors and mature adults are also gathering on their own.
Deborah Miller-Tuck, 57, a resident of Baltimore, Md., along with 11 other women is
a member of S.W.A.P., which stands for Sisters With A Purpose. The group of Christian
women hails from a variety of churches in the Baltimore area with a mission to provide
outreach to those in need. Not only do the women visit nursing homes and donate
care baskets during the holiday seasons, they also make time to fellowship among

For Many, Hip, Joint Surgery a Gateway to New Beginnings

The word “surgery”
generally tends to have a
negative connotation. Not
too many are thrilled with
the thought of a loved one,
or themselves for that matter,
being given anesthesia and
then going under the knife. It
is the hope of medical experts,
however, that the benefit of
certain surgeries will one day
outweigh any inherent fears a
wary patient may have.
Hip and joint replacement
surgery is on that list,
according to Dr. James Wood,
a local orthopedic surgeon.
By shying away from such
surgery, Wood said that the
elderly are needlessly living

Gardening encourages the
use of motor skills, through
gardening tasks like
digging and planting seeds.
And though some seniors
may have restrictions on
their physical activity,
gardening tasks and
equipment can be modified
to meet their needs.
Because gardening is a
moderate impact workout,
it helps release endorphins
that relieve stress—as does
the beauty of the “Eden”
that you may create in or
outside your home.

Steele balances going

principal of a Baltimore
County elementary school,
which is no easy task. To
unwind, she often has what
she calls Coffee Klatches.
“It’s just having coffee and
talking… talking about
whatever topic that comes
up,” Steele said. “It helps
to free your brain.”
Along with balancing
school and work, Steele
has no shortage of social
activities. From shopping
with friends in Lancaster,
Pa., to happy hour at
Friday’s, Steele only has
one request of her friends:

chronicle the history of First Baptist Church of North Brentwood, Md., which is over 100
years old.

and the Fifty-Two-Year-Spiritual Journey of Its Pastor, Perry Anderson Smith III, written by
Howard University professor Dr. Sandra G. Shannon, excavates, reconstructs and preserves
the rich history of one of Prince George’s County’s oldest African-American churches.

‘D.C. Unmasked & Undressed: A Memoir

When Clarence Thomas’ wife, Ginni, placed a
phone call to Anita Hill last
fall asking for an apology for the tawdry
testimony during the Supreme Court confirmation
hearings that almost torpedoed her husband’s
candidacy, little did she know the extent to which
the ill-advised request would only open up a can
of worms. For, not only did Dr. Hill reaffirm her
allegations of sexual harassment, but the rekindled
controversy inspired another credible witness to
step forward, finally, in defense of the sister.
That would be Lillian McEwen, a retired
federal judge who broke a 20-year silence to
announce that she’d dated Justice Thomas for
many years and that her esteemed colleague
and boyfriend had indeed been addicted to
pornography as alleged by Anita
under oath. In fact, Lillian even
went further, confessing that she
and Clarence had both been sex
freaks back in the day, indulging
in threesomes together, and even
copulating in front of strangers at
swingers’ clubs like the legendary
Plato’s Retreat.
What makes Ms. McEwen’s
revelations so damning of Thomas is
that at the time that they were an item,
he was serving as chairman of the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at
the pleasure of President Reagan. In that capacity,
ironically, he was presumably the top federal
official charged with fielding complaints of sexual
harassment. Yet, according to his ex-lover, he hired an elephantine, ever-erect phallus which felt like
and fired his own female staff members based on
their appeal as prospective sex partners and their
tolerance of his awkward advances.
Curiously, back in 1991, then Sen. Joe Biden
declined McEwen’s offer to appear before the
Judiciary Committee investigating Clarence.
Today, she still feels that the nation would’ve been
this juicy memoir which blows the sheets off her
lascivious liaisons with Clarence as well as a
number of other Washington, D.C. political power
brokers. The jaw-dropping tell-all is reminiscent
of Karrine Steffans’ Confessions of a Video Vixen,
which exposed the wanton debauchery of many a
Hollywood icon.
Here, hedonistic Judge McEwen recounts
raunchy romps ranging from the conventional to
the kinky, including wife-swapping, threesomes,
group gropes, and even a homoerotic session
with a couple of brothers ostensibly on the down-
low. As if on truth serum, the author almost
compulsively admits to such conduct unbecoming
as cheating on her first husband while she was
pregnant and climaxing a half-dozen times in a
strip club while receiving a lesbian lap dance and
being pawed by aroused customers.
To her literary credit, Judge
McEwen does exhibit a romance
novelist’s flair for the sensual, deftly
turning a profusion of titillating
euphemisms, whether she’s being
“kissed into oblivion” or inducing
“a symphony of soft moans” from a
satisfied lover. When not imaginatively
invoking readers to the point of arousal,
she devotes considerable time to
reflecting upon the abusive childhood
which apparently triggered the

This trait might have made the

Thomas her ideal mate had it not been for his
right-wing political philosophy. Instead, despite

of Houston, Harris kept his

that this was something I wanted
to be a part of,” said Harris.
After years of waiting and
research, Harris applied to the
astronaut corps in 1987, but was
not accepted. Harris returned

Reverend Dr. R. Clinton Washington
Reverend Dr. R. Clinton Washington (Pastor Washington) was born in Fauquier
County, Virginia on November 2, 1935. He was the eldest of 9 children born to
Deacon Robert L. Washington (deceased) and Mrs. Gladys Washington.
He was educated in the Fauquier County public school system. At an early
age Pastor Washington was baptized by the Late Rev. J.P. Baltimore and became a
member of the Mt. Morris Baptist Church in Hume, Virginia.
In 1953 his family moved to Washington, D.C., where he united with the
Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Augustus Lewis.
Pastor Washington was a member of the Fellowship and Dramatic Guild, Gospel
Chorus, Senior Usher Board and Male Chorus. He served faithfully in the above
capacities until the Church recommended that he serve as a trial Deacon, and
was later made a full pledge deacon of Jerusalem Baptist Church. Because of his
faithfulness as a Deacon he was promoted to the position of Acting Chairman of the
Deacon Board.
Pastor Washington married the love of his life, Lois R. Gilbert on September 7, 1958, and from this union, four
children was born.
In February 1966, Pastor Washington delivered his initial sermon and was ordained as a Minister on February 18,
1967. In just a short period of time, he was elected to serve as Acting Pastor in 1968 and by unanimous decision was
selected Pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church on January 31, 1968 where he served as Pastor for 40 years and maintained
the title of Pastor Emeritus until his death.
During his Pastoral ministry, the church grew spiritually, numerically, and financially. He instituted the Augustus
Lewis Memorial Scholarship Fund, New Membership Orientation, Men and Woman’s Ministry, Feeding Ministry for the
Homeless, Single’s Ministry, Youth and Children Ministry, and he incorporated the Christian Education Ministry. Pastor
Washington was a person who identified with persons from all walks of life.
Pastor Washington was a graduate of the Washington Baptist Seminary; Urban Institute, School of Religion, Howard
University; Inter-Met Theological Seminary, Hampton University Minister’s Conference. In 1988, Pastor Washington
received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Richmond Virginia Seminary.
During his ministry, Pastor Washington served faithfully in the following organizations:

blocks for the Wizards—

Wall’s skills as a lead man
are obvious; Crawford can
score with ease at times
and Booker’s toughness
underneath the boards could
provide Washington with a
new “big three” similar to
the Arenas-Butler-Jamison
days.

NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor
Pleads Guilty, Get’s No Jail Time

NFL legend Lawrence Taylor was
sentenced to six years probation in New York
on March 22 after pleading guilty to sexual
misconduct.
The 52-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer
was first indicted during summer 2010 on
felony charges of third-degree statutory rape
and third-degree patronization for allegedly
paying a 16-year-old girl $300 to have sex
with him. He initially pleaded not guilty and
faced up to five years in prison if convicted,
but eventually took a bargain deal in January,
pleading guilty to the misdemeanors charges of
sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute.
As a part of his deal, Taylor admitted that
he paid for sex with the now 17-year-old girl,
but maintains that she lied about her age,
claiming she was 19.
The girl, whose name has not been released
to the public, also appeared in court March
22 to give a victim statement, but the judge
didn’t allow her because victim statements
aren’t permitted during misdemeanor charge
hearings.
USAToday.com reports that prosecutor
Arthur Ferraro said Taylor’s sentence of
only probation with no jail time was mainly
facilitated because Taylor agreed to aid federal
officials with information regarding their
