Competition
Maya Cinemas and the Arts Council of Kern (ACK) have
collaborated to organize a juried art competition
featuring works inspired by movies and the movie going experience. Eight winners will be
chosen and their art work will be enlarged to 12’x18’ and installed on the exterior of Maya
Cinemas. Each winner will be eligible to use 2 free movie passes per week from July-December
exclusively at Maya Cinemas. Select submissions will be on display in Maya Cinemas Lobby from
June 2nd -July 18th, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: This contest is open to all artists, age 18 and over, currently residing in
Kern County. Original works only and work must have been completed
within the last two years. Entries must follow the movie theme,
specifically: art that features characters from movies, actors’
likenesses, or themes related to the movie going experience (popcorn,
3d glasses, etc.). Please be aware of any copyright infringement
issues: if you are taking your inspiration from a movie poster or other
artwork, you may not copy that work directly, and any element copied
from another source must be extremely trivial. In addition, art
featuring specific “Bakersfield” themes will also be accepted. Maya
Cinemas and the ACK reserve the right to refuse works judged
unsuitable or with unusual request.

ENTRY APPLICATION: All artists need to complete the entry form with all information
requested. There are no fees to enter the contest. Only one entry per
person will be accepted, no collaborations please.

ARTWORK SUBMISSIONS: All media, styles and techniques are encouraged. This includes
but is not limited to: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed media,
drawing or collage. Due to the nature of the installation, only 2D
entries will be accepted. No sculpture, performance or video artwork
will be accepted. All artwork submitted must be a vertical image
and exactly 18”x27” so that it will enlarge to scale.

DELIVERY OF WORK: All submissions are due June 2nd 2011. Artwork is to be turned
in at or mailed to Maya Cinemas, 1000 California Ave,
 Bakersfield 93304. Entries received after June 2nd will not be
considered for the contest. After notification that work has been
accepted the artwork will be photographed and enlarged to the 12’x18’
banner size.

SALES: ALL works submitted must be for sale. Work will be sold at the price
listed on the entry form. Artist will receive 75% of the sale and the
remaining 25% will be donated to the Arts Council of Kern’s Art in
Schools At Risk Youth Programming. Artist will receive payment for
work sold within two weeks after the close of the exhibition. The sale
price must be reasonable and in line with the artists previous sales.

PREPARATION OF WORK: All work must be clean, dry and ready to hang with the proper
hanging devices attached. Please include a label on the back of the
piece with your name, phone number, title and price of the artwork.

LIABILITY: All care and caution will be exercised in the handling of your artwork.
Neither Maya Cinemas, ACK, nor their agents may be held liable for
any loss or damage to any artwork. All art is displayed at the risk of
the artist. Artists are encouraged to provide their own insurance for
displayed work. Maya Cinemas and the ACK will not accept
responsibility for loss or damage during transit or shipping.
Submission of the entry form serves as an agreement to the conditions
in this prospectus.

CONTEST RULES: Artists related to, living in the same household with, or that
have a close relationship with any member of the jury will not
be eligible to participate in the contest, however they will still
be allowed to display and sell artwork.

JURORS: The Arts Council of Kern will appoint a panel of three (3) qualified
jurors to select the winners from among eligible entries. The official
jury shall select winners based on originality, content, quality, appeal
and adherence to the contest rules, theme and guidelines.

ARTWORK PICKUP: All unsold artwork must be picked up by Monday, July 18th from Maya
Cinemas. Work that remains beyond the pickup date will be subject to
a storage fee.
EXHIBIT SCHEDULE: June 2- Art Submissions due at Maya Cinemas.

June 6- Contest winners announced

July 14*- Artist’s Reception at Maya Cinemas, 5-8pm *this date is subject
to change

July 18- Pick up artwork
