Crews in California work to
open roads, repair damage
By Sudhin Thanwala

SAN FRANCISCO — Crews along California’s Central

Coast worked Friday to reopen a highway through the Big Sur
area and repair damage from a flood that forced the evacuation
of a mobile home park, as the region got a respite from a pow-
erful storm that brought heavy wind and rain.
Residents in the 45-unit Pacific Cove Mobile Home Park in
Santa Cruz County were ordered to evacuate on Thursday
when a failed drainage pipe tore a roughly 15-by-100 foot hole
in the ground near homes and sent a 3-foot surge of water into
Capitola Village, authorities said.
“The water was moving really rapidly and carrying debris,
garbage cans, kids’ toys, chairs,” said Pamela Bone, 52, a res-
ident of the mobile home park. “My neighbor and I were look-
ing across from each other at the river running between us.”

Consumer
quandary
By Philip Dimaano

W
hile I was driving a few weeks
ago, a billboard caught my eye
with the simplicity of its appear-
ance and message. Original music by “The
Beatles” was now available on iTunes, but
what struck me was how neither the band nor
the company name was
displayed. The image of
the four band members
and the iconic Apple sym-
bol conveyed all the nec-
essary information in front
of a plain white back-
ground.
What was even more
interesting was how I saw
the exact same billboard again a few seconds
later further down the road. In fact, I must
have seen that same billboard at least three
times along the road within the span of a
minute or two, effectively burning the mes-
sage of the new iTunes feature into my mem-
ory.
The use of billboards is merely one method
that businesses and marketing agencies use to
reach their target consumer group.
Commercials are no longer constrained to the
television, as they can now be seen while
streaming online videos from your desktop,
laptop or even your phone.
Facebook enables advertisers to specifical-
ly target individual consumers thanks to the
