As we passed a road overlooking a valley, admiring (menghargai) the view from the top, the Seattle cab driver
pointed to a huge, white mansion by the lake below and said, "That's where Bill lives." "Bill who?" I innocently
ventured (spekulasi) to ask. "Gates of course" he replied, giving me a look that made his Indonesian passengers in
the back feel completely ignorant. "Everyone here calls him Bill because he is from here?" "No. Not everyone.
Only those close to him. I went to school with him."The journalist within us was instinctively at work, taking notes
at everything he said. "Are you still in touch with him?" "From time to time, when we have school reunions."
The next day our group, on a media visit that involved a two-day stop in this Northwest (barat laut) port city
took another cab for a meeting and the driver claimed the same thing like the one we had the day before.
Bill went to school in Washington, and people in Seattle, cab drivers in particular, have the right to claim he is

About six hundred years ago Austria ruled (menguasai) the Swiss people against their wishes. Austria had
appointed a cruel commander named Gessler to control the Swiss and to make sure they did not revolt
(memberontak). All the Swiss hated Gessler because he tried to crush (mematahkan/ menghancurkan) their spirit
and take away their freedom. One day, Gessler placed his cap upon a flag pole in the market and gave instruction
that every person who passed the flag pole had to solute his cap.
A few days later, William Tell, one of the finest archers (pemanah) in Switzerland, accompanied by his young
son, courageously walked by the cap on the pole without saluting it.
Being informed that William Tell had disobeyed, Gassier grew angry and his cruelty showed as he smiled and
said to William tell, “I hear that you're not such a bad archer, Well, being a generous man. I am going to let you
show us how good you are with a bow.”
Gessler then turned to one of his soldiers and ordered, “Take the boy over to that tree. Tie him to it and place
this apple on his head.” Gessler handed the soldier an apple he had in his pocket. He then addressed William Tell.
"Now William Tell, let's see how good you are. If you can shoot the apple off your sons head, you both be set free.
If you fail, I'll give orders that you both be killed"
The crowd and soldiers were horrified (tercengang/ terkejut) at these words, but calmly, William took two
errors from his quiver (tempat anak panahnya), one of which he placed in his belt. The other he fitted to the bow
string. The crowd was completely silent as the arrow sped from William Tell's bow. A sigh of relief passed through
the crowd as the arrow cut the apple in two. The people rejoiced.

It was a cool, autumn evening when we rode our bikes to Johnson's Meadow (padang rumput). We leant
(menyandarkan) them up against the stone wall. Johnson's Meadow was the largest field around. In summer, it was
like a sea of gold when the wheat was ripening. In the depths of winter, when the snow had fallen, it was like a
frozen lake. Tonight, it was dark and still (hening).
We had brought our torches because there were no lights on the lane. I was frightened because Tom had told
me that he'd seen a UFO the night before in the same field.
I climbed over the mossy wall like a mountain goat and followed Tom across the field like an animal, on the
prowl (mencari mangsa). Suddenly, Tom stopped. He turned to look at me, his green eyes shining in the dark like a
cat's. “It landed here,” he said, pointing to a circle of flattened grass.
'I don't believe you,' I replied. 'There's no such thing as a UFO.'
'It's true!' he shouted angrily, 'I'll prove it to you.'
I shook my head. Tom read too many books and saw so many films about UFOs and aliens - he was making
up. Of course he was!
'Come here,' ordered Tom, pulling me into the circle.
'Don't be silly,' I said nervously.
Then I began to shiver; goose bumps appeared in the back of my neck. A shiver ran down my spine (tulang
belakang) like a small frightened mouse.
'I want to go now,' I cried uncontrollably.
It was too late. A bright circular light appeared in the sky above like a yellow moon. I tried to move but I
