LESSON 4. IDENTIFY THE TYPES AND PURPOSE OF OUTPUT DEVICES.

OUTPUT – is a data that has been processed into useful form.

OUTPUT DEVICE – is any hardware component that can convey information to user. It is
a part of the computer that receives the processing from the computer. An output device
comes in several forms, including sound, visual effects like the display and print jobs.
Output devices are distinguished from input devices in that they display output for the
user. Input devices are the parts of the computer that give the machine instructions.

Examples of Output Device.

1. MONITOR – it is like a television or a cathode ray tube (CRT) that displays data from
the
computer. The newer type of display device which uses liquid crystal display
(LCD).

A CRT (cathode ray tube) monitor is one of the two basic

types of computer monitors. It is a bowl-shaped screen
made of a glass envelope containing an electron gun and a
fluorescent screen that emits light when the gun releases
electrons. The electron beam is then magnetically
deflected, focused, and modulated in a way to form a
image.

A flat panel screen that uses the liquid crystal

display (LCD) technology and connects to a
computer. Laptops have used LCD screens almost
exclusively, and the LCD monitor is the standard
display screen for desktop computers.

2. PRINTER – it is a device that prints images or pictures created on the computer paper.
The printed
output from the printer is called hardcopy or printout.

KINDS OF PRINTER
A. NON-IMPACT PRINTER – type of printer that forms graphics and characters without
striking the
paper.

1. Ink-jet Printer – a non-impact printer that forms graphics and characters without
striking
the paper. It sprays tiny drops of liquid ink onto paper.

2. Photo Printer – color printer that produces photo-lab quality pictures.

3. Laser Printer – a high-speed, high quality non impact printer. Prints text and
graphics in very high-quality resolution, ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 dpi. Typically costs
more than the ink-jet printer but performs much faster.

4. Thermal Printer – generates images by pushing electrically heated pins against

heat
sensitive paper.

5. Label Printer – small printer that prints on adhesive type material. It also print
bar codes.

6. Plotters – an output device used for printing big posters, architectural

drawings and
billboards.
B. IMPACT PRINTER – a printer that forms characters by striking mechanism against
inked-ribbon
that contacts paper.

1. Dot-matrix Printer – an impact printer that produces printed images when

tiny wire
pins strike the ribbon.

2. Line Printer – high-speed impact printer that prints entire line at a time.
Speed is
measured in lines per minute (lpm).

3. AUDIO-OUTPUT DEVICE – computer component that produces music, speech, or other

sounds.

EXAMPLE: Speaker - An electro-acoustic transducer that converts electrical

signals into
sounds loud enough to be heard at a distance.

Headsets - A pair of headphones with a

voice transmitter attached.
4. OTHER OUTPUT DEVICES

1. Projector – displays the image on a wall-sized screen. It is best for giving

lectures to a
big crowd so that everybody can see the presentation properly.

2. Voice Synthesizer – is used to mimic human voice. It can interpret text and
convert it into
tones which sound like human speech. This is sometimes
encountered in
telephone answering devices or phone service.

3. Braille Embrosser - is a printer, necessarily an impact printer, that renders text

as braille.
Blind users call other printers ink printers.
