I couldn’t have asked God for a better family

Dear VOG Alumni
This year’s newletter is titled VOG Connect and basically
serves to introduce the current VOG committee to you
and to get them to share about their experience and
give you an idea of what VOG is like now.
I saw VOG perform for the first time in 2006 and I
knew I had found the people I had been looking for.
When I joined, I was one of those people who preferred
to sit at the back and keep quiet, watch everyone inter-
act, practice, finish practice and go home. In my second
year at VOG I started opening up and allowing people
into my life and my space. It’s then that through the
people at VOG, God started teaching me about worship
and fellowship and I felt so bad because I had missed out
on so much. Through other people’s life stories I started
to see God’s beauty and power. From that I learnt that if
I say I love God, then I need to make myself vulnerable
to Him and allow Him to be God in my life. There is a fa-
mous quote by Clive Lewis which says that “friendship is
born at that moment when one person says to another:
“what? You too? I thought was the only one”. I found
myself saying this so often and that’s when I realised
that “wait a minute, I have friends”. People who are not
scared to say “you see, now what you are doing Andisa
is nonsense and you need to fix it”. People who are not
afraid to be young, crazy and have fun in Christ. People
who do not sugar-coat issues or tiptoe around them.
Wow, I have never met a group of people who are so real
with each other.
I find it funny how there’s so much diversity in VOG;
this society has people from totally different social, eco-
nomic and cultural backgrounds, but they all speak one
language; GOD. VOG has been growing so much spiritu-
ally and I see this through people’s writing. The standard
of song writing has just been increasing at an alarming
rate, especially this year.
I have never seen people who are so gifted and yet
so humble, the humility that these people show reminds
me of Christ himself. Through VOG, I think God is rais-
ing up a generation of anointed artists whose passion
is rooted in Christ, who want to achieve nothing but
excellence for Him and champion for His cause. The pas-
sion that these young people have for Christ and music
makes me believe that the South African Gospel Industry
is about to get a run for its money. If you don’t believe
me, come see for yourself on the 9th of October at Guy
Buttler Theatre.
I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you
VOG Alumni because truly speaking, this is a manifesta-
tion of your prayers and I urge you to keep praying. I
started serving in VOG as Public Relations Officer at the
beginning of 2009 and I got re-elected to carry on in
2010 as well. My job basically is to take care of the soci-
ety’s public image, but this article is not about me just
doing my job, it’s a short testimony about what I have
seen God do to and through VOG. I hope to see you all in
October.

the way for us. Carry on loving God for…“No eye has
seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what
God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians
2:9).

My name is Lungile Precious Nontobeko Fatyela and I
am the sitting president for 2010. I must say I am unable
to acquaint myself with the title because VoG existed
to me only in my dreams and never did I think I would
find it, let alone be its president. In my matric year my
high school SCO teacher asked what I’m going to do at
Rhodes, i told her of my thoughts about people, many
young people and giving praise to God with song and
having great fun. In my head many people grew closer
to God and joined this group of young people, that I
was a part of me, little did I know that my thought/vi-
sion would become so real. This thought/vision brought
me great comfort and even though I had never seen it,
it became something I held onto, the thought of finding
people who loved God and praised Him the only way I
knew how, through song.
Upon my arrival at Rhodes University in 2008, I joined
VOG and immediately fell in love with it, particularly
after our first camp. What was it about VOG? I deeply
loved how those whom I found were so expressive about
their love for The Creator and though they stemmed
from different contexts, forests and gardens, they were
all unified by their growth from the sun, Our Creator. The
freedom of being fully human and young whilst being
able to laugh, joke and tease one another, I found was
amazing. It was full of a joyous churchy ambiance that
was not restricted to protocol yet complete in its compo-
nents of fellowship.

“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to
help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for
them” (1 Timothy 2:1). God has called us and appointed
us to intercede and pray for everyone, and not just our-
selves. VOG’s prayer room is geared towards praying for
our campus, the world we live in, our families, the salva-
tion of souls, our musical, dance and drama ministries
and everything which requires prayer.
The prayer meetings have grown at an astounding
rate and many VOG members are answering the great
commission of prayer. The prayer meetings have pro-
duced results, through God’s grace, through the healing

The road I have travelled with VOG has been a thor-
oughly fruitful one. I joined Voice of Glory in my second
year at Rhodes after having fallen head over heels in love
with the mission that they are part of. Being a member
of the society has brought me more joy than I could have
ever thought possible. As a member of the choir I expe-
rienced the kind of joy that can only be found in times of
true worship. In my time as a member of the committee
I have watched as the society’s steps were made firmer.
As Alumni Liaison, my job entails being the mouth-
piece of the current society members and informing
those that have left the university and carried on, but
remain part of the family, of what is happening within
the society. Voice of Glory is more than just a society. It
is a family, and unlike societies, with family no matter
where you are it is your job to ensure. The portfolio of
alumni is a new one and I feel that I was unable to carry

of people and deliverance of many bondages of the devil.
There was also a team building exercise during the year
and this was to try and unite the VOG members and to
build a family atmosphere in the society. There was also
a small bring and share for the VOG prayer and interces-
sion desk, this was to celebrate the birth of intercession
and prayer in the society.
As the VOG prayer desk, we just thank God for hon-
ouring us and bestowing upon us the prestigious privi-
lege of praying for the music, dance and drama depart-
ment, because this is our way of preaching the gospel
of Christ. Even though the devil might try to hinder us in
our ministry we will continue to pray and preach, as Paul
writes in 2 Timothy 4: 2 “Preach the word of God. Be
prepared, whether the time is favorable or not.”
Our upcoming events include prayer for the Mission
week, happening from the 10th to 18th September,
and we thank God for allowing us to be involved in this
harvest of the many souls coming to Christ Jesus. We
are also praying for our own upcoming VOG worship
week, this is where will be taught more about worship
and how to experience a deeper and fruitful relationship
with Christ. We also will be praying for the final concert,
where we expect God to heal the sick, save the lost and
give life to the dying, by them simply listening to the
Word being preached through music.

Need Him more with every step
I grew up with the idea that as I spent more time doing the
things God has called me to do, or maybe praying more and
seeking His face more, I would, naturally, mature. Maturity in
the sense that I would grow in the spirit, and the only anal-
ogy I had in my mind was my physical growth, where I grow
and become older and more independent of my sources,
in my case, my parents, and teachers and so on. Recently
though I have come to know and understand that with God
it is different, when you grow in whatever it is that is of God,
you increase your dependence on him. So if you conquer a
mountain that had been in your way, you don’t gain resist-
ance per say, but you gain dependence, and dependence on
God.
VOG Choir activities have been like that so far this year,
as we move more and more into the year, and as we achieve
our goals that we set in the beginning of the year, we realise
now that this is when we need God the most. Our testimo-
nies for the year though, give us the confidence to know that
“Lord you have brought us this far, we know you won’t leave
us now.”
Some of the activities we took part in this year include
GOSPEL AFRICA, a programme in the National Arts Festival
that looks to bringing Gospel Music to the Arts festival and
also allow up and coming choirs and artists from the most
rural parts of Eastern Cape to have a chance to experience

CD and DVD recording, and although you can expect formal
invites within the next week, I’ll jump the gun and let you
know, we are expecting you all.
