High inflation eventually has reduced
usage of mobile services among consumers
and pushed up the cost for the operators.
Overall, it has negatively impacted the de-
mand and supply and hence growth. Though
inflationary pressure eases around the globe
and especially in our region, Pakistan still faces
a high double-digit inflation.
Largely, the overall law and order situa-
tion has limited the network expansion, re-
stricts upgrading and maintenance of sites,

increases security-related expenses and
dampens investor confidence.
General sales tax (GST) has been brought
down to 19.5 per cent from 21 per cent,
though the industry had demanded 16 per
cent tax like the one on other services. SIM ac-
tivation tax has been slashed by 50 per cent,
bringing it to Rs 250, but the industry had
asked for its complete withdrawal.

Although we consider these tax measures
positive, we feel that there is more to be done.
We are all aware of the impact of high tax rates
on the industry, which depress growth in sub-
scriber numbers, divert investments and ulti-
mately discourage mobile usage.
When this industry flourishes, it helps the
economy by attracting foreign direct investment
(FDI), contributing heavily to the national ex-
chequer, generating employment and increas-
ing productivity of almost every sector. Therefore,
it is imperative that the taxation structure for the
mobile industry is rationalized further”.
The above views are not something to ig-
nore; this is something coming from the head
of a reputed company which is really in hurry
to think about other options in the region be-
cause the business viability has a diminishing
trend in Pakistan. The scenarios are different in
other countries but in Pakistan we have closed
our eyes. We can stop it from happening.
Business viability is foremost for any in-
vestor, we have come to this point so early
that now a massive overhaul is required to
further strengthen the sector. Just recently,
PTA has started a mechanism to address cus-
tomer’s grievances whereby customer would
be able to know their rights and contact the
authority if that right is violated by any service
provider. We need to appreciate its stance
though it is a little late and it should have
been implemented much earlier when we
had started this journey.
Similarly we need a mechanism to sup-
port the investor as well which is actually at
the receiving end like our consumer.
I happened to talk to number of decision
makers of the industry and according to them;
it is the high time when a true system should

be implemented for a long term growth.
As the calling rates are going down so
sharply due to an unnecessary competition,
it is getting harder to survive with a very thin
margin. I can remember those early ads of Te-
lenor when it appeared that the company
was only following the quality of services and
it had nothing to do with the ongoing price
war but now they are feeling the heat. Their
recent campaigns are only focusing on the
price only. It could have been avoided had
the authority played its role on merit.
A product to remain within the reach of
masses does not mean it should go down to
such a level where it loses its identity. People
are carrying multiple SIMs whereas one person
can only use one connection at one time. A
total of those issued SIMs become a hefty 90
million figure but this figure is not generating
the revenue in actual. A big number of this fig-
ure (connections) remains useless in the pock-
ets and drawers of the subscribers. So what
does it mean, are we getting the revenues
from 60 – 70 million active SIMs? If this is the
case then we have reached the saturation level
quite early where prices can not go down fur-
ther and only the bundle offers are helping op-
erators to keep the connections active.
In a recent discussion with Mr. Saad M
Waraich, Country Head, Nokia Siemens, he
said that “no operator is willing to invest more
unless the situation gets better”. It clearly
shows that companies are more interested to
make the current situation viable rather than
to invest on something which does not have
a proper road map. If revenue situation re-
mains the same, I don’t think operators would
be prepared to spend another 100 - 200 mil-
lion USD on a 3G license. The economy is
slow, the market still hasn't matured and Pak-
istan is not ready for 3G.
How many of us, through mobile phone,
make use of other more important value
added services. According to analysts, value
added services are mere 7% of any operator’s
revenue in Pakistan. That shows the trend that
how people are into other non voice services.
We keep talking about the technology pene-
tration but in normal life, in most of the cases,
we actually have to call people to tell we have
sent you an email so a response is awaited.
Overdose is always harmful, if you give a
car to a child; it is likely hood that he will hit
somewhere. I don’t mean that we do not de-
serve modern tools but a good soldier must
know the usage of weapon he has. We need
a trained user who could get the maximum
out of the services. That user can not be born
out of debates and seminars. Practically speak-
ing, the students of this country who repre-
sent and major portion of our potential
buying class and also those who work at of-
fices must be trained to utilize the existing
voice and non-voice services to the maximum
level. This will increase the revenue streams.

For this government must start from its
own end. SMS activity to win cars and mobile
phones is not enough. Very basic activities
that we come across in our daily life must be
processed electronically. Mobile phone oper-
ators can design the applications to process
issues regarding to Wapda, Telephone, WASA,
Legal processes, Education. Agriculture is an-
other sector where by government can make
use of these applications to remove the gap
between markets and crop producers. Mobile
banking is one such thing but it may face the
same fate if not planned properly.
The entire exercise requires the aware-
ness of DATA, another domain which is being
victimized badly. Though Pakistan sent its first
email much earlier in 80’s through a local ISP

duced a healthy number of internet users. We
are still boasting some 2 to 3 million dialup
users 0.35 million of broadband subscribers.
Due to the very same reason, Wi-Max has
not been successful as per expectations in
Pakistan as it should have been. We were the
pioneer to have started the largest rollout in
the world when Wateen launched the serv-
ices in 22 cities and it was a matter of pride
for the whole nation but unfortunately after
just one and a half year the company resorted
to sell the DSL connection whereas its core
business was Wireless and not the wired con-
nectivity. To make Wi-Max a success, Wateen
took number of steps and one of the major
step they took in the very early stage to defeat
PTCL’s network was cheap Wi-Max connec-
tion. The technology was new and was not
meant for masses in its early life. Massive price
reduction and free equipment and installa-
tion reduced the profitability and it made life
difficult for other new entrants as well.
On the handset side we have lost the
chance to let anyone open its manufacturing
facility in Pakistan, of course the benefits
would have been too much. But now we can
help the major brands by putting a strong
curb on Chinese mobile phone which are
causing customers to lose money as there is
no warranty and after sales services available
from the sellers. Government should regular-
ize this segment as well before it is too late.
The objectives of the operators should be
clear. Push for more consumers and expan-
sion, retain the existing ones and develop
strategies to generate higher ARPU, which
stands currently at some $ 3 on average, from
the current subscriber base.
I would just say government has a major
role to play, it must, in real terms, provide the
level playing field where there should be a
healthy competition. Awareness of technol-
ogy is the most important thing to do. Both
investor and government can do lots of ac-
tivity to develop this area. We do not want to
lose investment in Pakistan but for that we
must do some serious home work. n

If you want a wireless all-in-one for busi-
ness use, the HP Officejet 6500 is a solid choice.
It’s fast, attractively designed, comes with rea-
sonable ink prices and, with the exception of
photos, delivers decent print quality.

The printer comes with a duplexer, which
you pop into the back. It gives the printer an
even larger footprint, and the printer won’t
print without it.
When it came to printing, we performed
tests both over a Wi-Fi network and over a tra-
ditional USB connection. Over Wi-Fi, it took 37
seconds to print the Word document, 48 sec-
onds to print the PDF, and 1:42 to print the
PowerPoint document. It took 24 seconds to
print a 4 x 6-inch photo and 31 seconds to
print an 8.5 x 11-inch photo. On average, the
printer took 21 seconds to begin printing, with
the exception of photos, which took between
16 seconds and 37. The Officejet 6500 aver-
aged a relatively brisk 1:01 seconds over Wi-Fi,
second only to the Epson WorkForce 600 (48
seconds) among five all-in-ones we’ve recently
tested, and well below the 1:36 average.

the most feasible, cost-effective and healthy
project is solar electricity production. But the
major problem is the availability of Solar Cells.

people should promote the concept of light-
ing up their houses via solar electricity incase

has been irking the people so much that
even the UPS are unable to provide electricity
in the hour of load shedding. God almighty
has gifted these cities with sufficient sunlight
which can be used to harness electricity from
the yet expensive Solar panels, which could
be stored in 6 to 8 big batteries and these bat-
teries connected to the UPS, which would
switch over to this electricity at the time of
load shedding. In this way, people would save
the money spent on gasoline (generators)
and if they used to just bear the heat when
their UPS fell down, they would now be able

pay a guaranteed rate for any solar power
they feed into the grid.

Copying the text was not easy and it
required great effort to copy it by hand in
the Middle Ages.
It happened in monasteries and, later,
secular scriptoria as well, but since it was
manual and very laborious, therefore, every
copied text had the chances of error. Or I
can say no second copy matched with the
original one as we see it today.
The concept of making similar copies
through printing was highlighted in the
late Middle Ages and then the first identical
copies that were made of playing cards
using the wood-blocks. In this process, the
white portions of the paper around the
printed or copied area were cut away to
stand out the inked area. And then the pic-
tures with caption started to be copied
with these wooden-blocks which were
later collected and bound into books
which are called block-books.

continued in Germany, Switzerland and
Netherlands for nearly half a century
whereas in Netherland the trend of multi-
ple identical copies was even more in de-
mand but since it was all manual so when
the print run was finished, the wooden

n Since 1995, Windows has been the lion of
the OS market. Though Windows did exist be-
fore that but the OS of Windows 95 was a real
success and it paved way for extreme boost of
Microsoft Windows. My experience (and of
many others as well) says that Windows XP is
the most stable and best Windows yet in terms
of operability, compatibility and ease-if you ig-
nore just the outlook of Vista. Vista indeed has
failed to satisfy the customers of Microsoft Win-
dows and with the pre-release of Windows 7,
Microsoft is trying to cover up the mess it has
created and to keep its worthy rivals at the
back. Yes, the pre-mature release of Vista (with
a vast amount of bugs) was triggered by the
launch of Mac's OS X Leopard 10.5.x
I myself have used all XP, Vista, Seven
(beta) and Mac OS X 10.5.5 on my Intel based
system with motherboard of Intel DG31PR,
2.83 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB RAM, 500
GB hard disk and 512 MB ASUS EAH3450 HD
graphics card and have found Mac OS X to be
the best. Though I do not have the full real
Mac system, I am using mackintosh or iAtkOS
v5i which is equivalent to Mac OS X 10.5.5. This
is the best way to ease up your way to the real
Macs and to know the best OS in the world.

Mac is real fast. My system booting time
with Mac is just 35 seconds and turn off time
is 5 seconds which relieves me of waiting so
much for the system to get ready. Moreover
it takes just over 5 seconds to start Safari (web

and Messenger: Mac. Whereas the users of
Vista especially are real aware how irksome it’s
loading can be. On this very system Vista took
1 min 55 seconds to fully get started. XP takes
1 min 20 seconds.

Unlike the free/cheap versions of XP and
Vista, this Mackintosh version is stable. Never
once in 5 months did I have to reinstall in on
the basis of corruption and not even once did
the system crashed during work, forcing it to
be restarted. Whereas you often have to use the
task manager in Windows to get rid of un-
wanted application especially when they eat all
the resources and make system like an old man.
NO VIruses:
This is one of the greatest problems of
Windows users that there is always a threat
lurking over your head. You have to be extra
careful to avoid any contact with a virus.
Whereas there may be a virus or two that is
built for Mac and in my entire usage, I have
neither encountered a single virus that
harmed my Mac nor have I heard of any.
It always takes some time to wear off the
feel of Windows and there may be occasions
when you would become annoyed with Mac.
Don't worry! If you have already installed Win-
dows on your system you just need to install
the mackintosh, it will automatically ask you
if u want to boot from Windows or Mac. If you
have installed Mac first and Windows after-
wards, just search and download Acronis Disk
Manager and afterwards Acronis OS Selector,
your problem will be resolved. Moreover you
can also access your Windows formatted par-
titions in Mac whereas you cannot do this for
Mac in Windows. It doesn't even detect them.

As I have said earlier, my system is a dream
Machine, excellent for gaming and high
speed graphics usage. XP shows my RAM ca-
pacity to be 3.36 GB though even still I can
play high res games like Assassin's Creed and
Crysis etc. Whereas in case of Vista, my system
was rated 3.8 and with some over clocking of
GPU I was able take the rating to 4.6 but inter-
estingly Assassin's Creed was rated as 5.5, so it
ran slow. In Mac I get full 4GB RAM.

The system gets heated up to 45 degree
centigrade after 2 hours of usage in case of
XP and in 1.30 hours with Vista, whereas Mac
took 4 hours to heat up the system to 45 de-
gree centigrade.
parallel deskTOps:
The most interesting feature that is easily
visible as well is the concept of parallel desk-
tops. You can have up to 12 desktops running
in parallel. If you feel that your desktop is get-
ting too much cluttered and you also need all
the things, you just press F8 to open all the
available desktop or “Spaces” and F9 to sepa-
rate all the windows opened, drag the win-
dows in different desktops and free up your
space.
sOfTwares:
There is also an issue of required software
which can be solved very easily; there are a
number of free and Open Source Software
that work just the same as the ones you have
been using in Windows. Now this entire arti-
cle was written in Open Office with the same
ease as it is done in Microsoft Word.
Thus to conclude, Mac OS is indeed the
best of all the OSes. There is a dire need of ed-
ucating the masses in Pakistan about this OS.
A lot of people in the other countries now
prefer Mac systems over PCs as they are reli-
able, dependable, stable and fast. n

creasing. Being part of the business commu-
nity of Pakistan, we all are dependant on
computers in one way or other. Network of
networks i.e. internet has changed the life and
the ways people interact with each other.
Almost all of the organizations, ranging
from small organizations to larger financial in-
stitutions like banks and security organiza-
tions as well, are dependant on computers
and internet for their everyday operations. Im-
portant data of these organizations lie on the
computers which are connected to internet.
And this makes the data vulnerable to
blended threat. “Blended threat” is term re-
cently coined into the IT industry. So when
you are connecting your computer to inter-
net, it means that the computer is now con-
nected to millions of other computers and if
it is getting advantage of resource sharing on
one hand, its own information and resources
are at stake. One of the major threats is mal-
ware. Different terms like viruses, worms, spy-
ware, ad-ware, root kits and Trojans all comes
under the umbrella of malware.

This malware threat is always increasing
and is not going anywhere in near future. Ac-
cording to BBC, there are 53,000 viruses in ex-
istence and a new virus is discovered every
18 seconds. According to computer econom-
ics, on average organizations face 5 malware
attacks per year. Damages caused due to this
malware can be great. Let us take a look at
what this malware can actually do.

For any organization choosing an effec-
tive anti-malware solution is very important
and a major decision as antimalware is the
foundation of information assurance of an
organization. All the four tiers of organiza-
tion’s IT Infrastructure must be kept in mind
while selection of anti-malware software.
All of these tiers are different from each
other and hence have different protection
needs.
Workstations being used by the end
users are more vulnerable to malware at-
tacks. While on other hand, there are fewer
number of file servers in any organization
and these file servers are under administra-
tive control and hence are less vulnerable

to malware attacks.
Before selecting an antivirus solution, it
is very important for organizations and in-
dividuals need to understand the type of
malware and their consequences. Through
the term antivirus is being used largely to
refer to antimalware, malware is a very
broad term which includes many other
things such as worms, Trojans, root kits etc.
Following are different type of malware
which can affect the organizations
n Virus: these are the infectious pro-
grams which install themselves into com-

Best practices of handling an antivirus prod-
uct is another comprehensive topic which
may need another full text article. However, I
recommend organizations to make sure that
they have effective policies and procedures
in place to handle the antivirus.
Organizations must also create aware-
ness in their organizations for antivirus best
practices. A random audit must be con-
ducted to ensure that organization is in com-
pliance to its policies and procedures. n

this piece of machine, Jet, amused us more than any other
smart phone in the market.

Outer design
The Jet's front is dominated by the 3.1 incher display. With a
WVGA resolution of 480 x 800 pixels with the addition of AMOLED
technology, it provides contrast unrivaled by any LCD. Jet out shines
among rest of devices offering highest resolution in the market.
Three hardware buttons are below the big display; Call and
End keys are on left and right respectively and in between - a 3D
Cube. The Cube toggles the main menu on and off while a press
and hold launches the Task Manager.

the display off when you hold the handset next to your ear in a

quite solid and impressive.

There are number of ways to dial a con-
tact from Samsung Jet. The phone was
error free in the voice call area. With excel-
lent voice quality, reception was awesome.
The virtual key pad is at the bottom of
home screen which gives an easy look to
dial even with your fingers. I did not have
problem with it except for the few times
when I tried to dial a little quickly. The dialer
can also get activated through its reserved
shortcut.
The Speaker Call allows it to automati-
cally activate the speakerphone when you
take the handset off your ear during a call
and place it on a level surface. Lift the
phone back up to your ear and the regular
mode starts again.
Samsung S8000 Jet also has a proximity
sensor, which automatically turns off the
display when you hold it next to your ear. It
makes sure you wouldn’t accidently press
anything with your ear, while giving you in-
stant access to all the on-screen controls
when you take it off.
New events like missed calls or incom-
ing messages show up on the home screen
as a widget. It has three tabs each signaling
a different type of event. Every time you
restart your phone the event comes back
on the screen unless you go through the
log, which was quite annoying.
We unfortunately couldn’t test the
video call feature as we are not being of-
fered such a service in Pakistan yet.
Messaging with Jet
3 types of messaging is available in
Samsung Jet. SMS and MMS share the same
editor whereas Email has its own editor. For
SMS and MMS, you can add recipient from
the phone book, recent contacts or put it
manually.

cated Google icon can be found on the
menu’s first screen which opens only Gmail.
You can also use it for Google searches as
well as mapping. Other is traditional email
application which resides in the messaging
module. Here you can configure any kind
of account including the Gmail. It will not
accept the POP and SMTP settings auto-
matically so you have to put them manu-
ally. The email size limit is 5MB which you
can set finally.
Media gate
A newly added feature in this phone is
Cube Launcher/ Motion Gate. We call it
“Media Button” since it has every thing to
do with the media applications.
The hardware button to activate is
placed just above the shutter/camera key
on the right side of phone. One single push
will launch the 3D cube where you can

A longer push on the Media button will
launch the Motion Gate. This is something
interesting, another easy way to open ap-
plications of your desire by just shaking,
double-tap or snap-gesture. You can select
any application, in our case; we chose Music
player and FM radio. Snap towards an ap-
plication you want to use and it will run it.
We found it pretty handy.

Multimedia
fM radio is good in receiving signals
and plays almost all the stations in town.
The advanced RDS allows displaying the
station name on one row and some addi-
tional info on the other.
Music player is even more attractive
and a treat for music lovers. Built-in equal-
izers and 5.1 channel sound options with
your normal earphones you can fall in love
quickly. Unfortunately there is no option for
custom equalizer but the pre-defined
works quite well.
Video player is flawless; you don’t have
to convert the video to run on your Jet,
thanks to the presence of DivX and XviD
support. The player has all the required
functions and can play your video both in
horizontal and vertical mode. Like music
player, you can also turn 5.1 ch on. It has no
problem playing a VGA or a heavy file of
30fps. The strong 800 MHz processor makes
sure it is jerk free. We were able to play 640
x 272 40 Mb video with 30fps quite fluently
and it behaved like a mini LCD TV.

With Bluetooth A2DP and micro USB port,
the phone offers a good connectivity to ei-
ther other mobile phones or your PC.
The phone can be easily connected to

USB or copy your entire content on the frame's 2.0 GB of
memory. It automatically optimizes all your photos to display
in the highest quality possible. It can't automatically copy the
entire content of the external media; it copies them one by
one. To copy entire content on its memory, you have to con-
nect to a computer.
The menu structure is very easy to navigate. Moving your
Index finger on the frame brings touch sensitive LED’s back
to life and also brings up the selection of source media. The
menu presents you with six options: Photo, Music, Video,
Radio, Calendar, and Settings. The first three options allow you
to play from these files; it supports JPEG/BMP photos,
MP3/WMA/WAV audio, and MPEG-1, MPEG-4, and Motion
JPEG video.
This covers the bases for what most owners of this type
of frame would need. Using Radio you can Tune FM Stations
and can listen to some 20 stations by saving their settings for
future, plus you can also watch a photo slideshow along with
it. Calendar pulls up a clock, background song, and a photo
slideshow. You can set important reminders and set the first
day of the week as Monday or Sunday here.
Setting options include English and a bunch of other Eu-
ropean and Oriental languages, set display brightness/con-
trast, set color modes to vivid/natural/standard and optimize
your favorite pictures; set a weekly/daily/once alarm; set your
time and date, time format, frame time on/off; restore de-
faults; and upgrade your firmware.
The display quality is very nice and because of the dy-
namic color range, skin tones render a quality image. The re-
sponse time of its accelerometer was very good when it was
positioned vertically or horizontally and the image viewed at
both angles was very good. Transcend has provided options
like Animations and Themes with PF810 to display with Pho-
tos but you cannot customize them.
Video plays smoothly and even large photos load and tran-
sition fairly rapidly without artifacts. The speakers, they suffer
a lot in sound quality, you need to have some hearing device
plugged in your ears. As far as the price is concerned built-in
speakers are not a bad option, we have got external speaker
jack to connect it to external speakers. Radio tuning was fine
and there was no distortion detected during the play time.
All in all, PF 810 8-inch Digital Photo Frame provides
everything most users probably want and its ease of use and
stunning looks will especially attract people towards it. A must
gift for your loved ones! n

large to store anything that a kid wants in
a Laptop. With one USB port, an external card slot,
LAN card, Wi-Fi, and standard headphone & mic
jacks, the Intel offers decent connectivity
n Since the dominance of computers in
our society, it has become a partner in our
lives. Not only the elders but the children are
also on the same track. Like mobile phones,
children are getting used to it by playing
games and browse internet. A positive aspect
is that they are learning to operate this ma-
chine from the very early stage which will be
helpful for them later in the years but at the
same time they are exposed to the risk in-
volved like cyber victimization, also the bigger
machines are not appropriate since the re-
quirement is very little at this early stage.
Few years back we heard of something like
“One Laptop per Child”. The program was meant
to educate the children using the latest tech-
niques and equipment at a very affordable cost”.
Similarly, Intel has now introduced an-
other small laptop keeping in view the usage

The tiny Laptop is certainly worth a look
as a first laptop for your kid, something you

but a sample was enough to tell us the story.

With a small 9-inch screen, the Intel Lap-
top is about the size of a small book; it is easy
to carry with a handle and is pretty sturdy
when it comes to rough usage by kids. An at-
tractive notebook with white surface and
grey leather cover and its design does not
look too cheap. I guess children would love
to have it.
Putting all the things in this small pack-
age according to the wishes and desires of
consumers raises some difficult design ques-
tions, and the Intel has answered most of the
expected ones. Keyboard seems to be one of
the difficulties Intel faced when making the
machine.
We have seen unfortunate compromises
in key placement and double-mapped keys
on tiny keyboards. Intel takes it a step further,
with some of the tiniest keys we've ever had
to deal with for really small fingers.

Intel has made sure to set the size of keys
manageable enough that all the keys are of
usable size, which makes typing at least pos-
sible, if not entirely easy. Other keys, including
the backspace, tab, and control keys, are
smaller and were especially hard to hit.
We are quite used to put our fingers on
Right Ctrl and Right Shift keys but they have
been excluded here and only Left Ctrl and
shift keys are present. The tiny touchpad
works well with two mouse buttons. Overall,
the keyboard is easier to use but my personal
opinion is that it is overcrowded.
With one USB port, an external card slot,
LAN card, Wi-Fi, and standard headphone &
Mic jacks, the Intel offers decent connectivity.
It would be better if they had provided us
with 2 more USB’s and an external VGA port.
The card slot offers a good opportunity to
boost the hard drive space.
As this Laptop is specifically designed for
kids so we didn’t carry out any special Bench-
mark testing. But still we did some tests to
share; its speed reminds us of our old Pentium
III PC’s. We were able to surf the web and work
on some office documents with absolutely
900MHz Intel Mobile processor already sug-
gests that you may be able to have the pleas-
ure of Windows Vista experience. One thing
that we missed here was a DVD-ROM; size of
the notebook is so small that it cannot have
one. We were able to use this machine while
running a mix of applications and after 1.5 Hrs
of continuous usage there was still 55% of
power remaining.
Overall Intel has done a great job in design
and development of this Laptop but still it
needs a lot of tweaks. Intel is currently promot-
ing its energy efficient ATOM Processor, if it

it actually is, thanks to the large grey frame
that surrounds it. The extra space around the
screen serves a purpose: it is for the Webcam
that sits above the screen. With a resolution
of 800 x 480, there's not a lot of screen left to

have to read letters by squinting your eyes.
The two speakers play music nicely and per-
form well in a quiet environment.
Classmate Pc with cam comes with the
windows XP. The Hard Drive is pretty much

comes preloaded with MS-Office and e-
Learning class 6.0 and many of the apps you
want can be installed later because there is

n Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0 is specifi-
cally designed to provide hassle-free and
quality protection against viruses, worms
and other malicious programs, as well as
hacker attacks, spam and spyware in an en-
terprise environment. Recently, we got
Kaspersky Open Space Security Suite to test
on our systems, so why wait let’s get busy.
Testbed
To test this Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0, we
used a Dell Optiplex System with Pentium 4
2.26GHz processor, 1GB RAM and Windows
XP Service Pack 2.
Installation and un-Install
Before installing Kaspersky 6.0, we did not
uninstall the CA Antivirus that we were already
using on our system. But during installation it
asked us to uninstall CA antivirus as it was con-
flicting with installation process. After CA un-
install and a system reboot, we tried to install
Kaspersky again and it worked. All the instal-
lation went smooth and after a reboot and in-
stallation of update file of 68MB size, it was
ready to kill any virus on our system. During
installation, it gave an option to recognize the
friendly software, that means, a window ap-
pear showing all the programs that access the
internet one way or the other, you can include
the trusted software into the list which will im-
prove security next time they try to access the
outer world. Like its installation, un-installation
also went well but Kaspersky left its registry
unclean, which was deleted manually.

Kaspersky supports a bright and clean in-

nice feature that Kaspersky interface contains

protection, it also provides System Rescue

A Play and Stop button is available for
starting and ending scan or update at any
point of time.

schedule right after the installation, you can

left hand penal or through the “Setting” op-
tion as well.
You can set the schedule as per your con-
venience. Choose among hourly, daily,
weekly or the manual settings. Scan is di-
vided into three categories, Critical Areas, My
Computer and Startup Objects (programs
and applications). We set to scan the Critical
Areas and My Computer on daily basis
whereas directed the software to scan “My
Computer” 3 days a week.
Similarly you can set the schedule for “Up-
dates”. For our convenience we have set it to
“Automatic”. The software opens an interest-
ing window each time you computer tries to
connect the other computer on a network or

Port and Local Port which is very convenient
in deciding if user wants to continue with the
communication or not. It looks annoying
sometimes but for a secured machine it’s a big
help. You are even able to know who you are
chatting to if you are in a chat room of yahoo,
you will keep getting the IP addresses of the
unknown people you are chatting with. At
least they will not be able to hide their desti-
nations. You can stop this from appearing
every time by turning off Interactive mode.
Although Kaspersky provides a top-notch
protection to its users but still it is providing
them with System Rescue Disk option, so that
a user can restore its system after an infection.
Kaspersky monitors user activity and greatly
reduces overall System Scan time by scan-
ning only recently changed files.
The software has also provided its users
the option to increase or decrease protection
levels but we recommend that you always
keep your security level to “Recommended”,
otherwise you will feel difficulties in running
all your applications.
Password protection option is also pro-
vided with Kaspersky, so that unauthorized
users cannot change your anti-virus settings.
It imports network settings from explorer on
its first install but it also provides you with net-

work settings option, if you want to manually
set your network.
performance
Kaspersky is built for perfection and it also
showed its iron in our performance tests. For
performance testing we used some live
viruses, third-party softwares and also checked
the deep scanning impact of antivirus on our
programs. We also performed scanning speed
test on folders of large to small sizes.
Operating System loading time without
antivirus on our system was 25 seconds and
after Kaspersky was installed the System
speed only changed to 28 seconds, which
shows that this Antivirus has almost no effect
on our OS resources. Than we checked the
loading time of Microsoft office Word and it
took about 09 seconds to load it. Any Video
Converter 2.7.3 is a video ripping software; it
ripped our video file of 3MB size in 31 sec-
onds. Cyberlink Power Director at first refused
to work but after adding this program to
trusted zone, it also started performing nor-
mally. It took ten minutes to scan a 10 GB
folder and 1.36 MB folder was scanned in 18
seconds, we were amazed to see that the
scanning speed was far better than our pre-
vious antivirus software.
For testing its real potential we used
some live viruses but it detected all the
viruses in a record time and deleted them
from the system. During full scan of the sys-
tem, it also cleaned some infected files which
our old CA Antivirus 2008 was not able to de-
tect. When the deep scan of the system was
running, we checked some programs per-
formance and they worked well.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus provides an excel-
lent context-sensitive, in-program help file.
For example, if you are on the Anti-Spam
page and you click on help tab than you are
directly taken to the information regarding
the Anti-spam files in the Help file. Kaspersky
also offers a seperate PDF manual, it includes
just about everything you can do with an an-
tivirus, and it is a one sure complete manual
we have seen with this kind of product.
Kaspersky also delivers excellent online
FAQ and knowledge base. There are also ac-
tive user forums. If you don’t get help from
anywhere than you can e-mail or call their
toll-free number for live technical support.
conclusion
Those who are in search of a complete
system protection that is fast and reliable,
then we will definitely recommend Kaspersky
to them. It is a small package with a big all
time protection.
We were sick of our computers working
at snail paces because our previous antivirus
was not able to detect all viruses, but it came
and using highly sophisticated heuristics it
kicked all the viruses out of our system and
made it a mean machine. Although it took
some time to understand all of its functions
but overall using it was a worthwhile experi-
ence for all of us.

was restricted to a selective list of websites

cure that we now surf ever site on the web

HUTIC and guided them to achieve the
goal by using skill and knowledge in life.
Officials from the Huawei were also

MORE asked about the future prospects
of Huawei on investing further in UET Mr.
Jackie said, “Huawei is waiting for the launch
of 3G in Pakistan, as soon as it is launched,
we will upgrade the current 2.7G HUTIC fa-
cility to 3G. We have strived to train young
professionals on the latest equipment”.

in Superior University and completed his
three weeks course at HUTIC said, “Getting
telecom training from here was an overall
priceless experience. HUTIC provided us
with the opportunity of getting hands-on-
experience on the state of the art GSM
technology. We were allowed to configure
devices and get a practical experience,
which is not possible if you go to any GSM
operator, they only allow their senior engi-
neers to touch the equipment not a
trainee”.
While talking to MORE Dr. Waqar Mah-
mood, head of KICS, shared about his fu-
ture ambitions in training students with 3G
and Wi-Max technologies, he said “We have
already completed all the prerequisites and
as soon as PTA gives green signal for 3G, we
will start its training here. Through Wi-Max
technology has not been a success so far in
Pakistan, but we are in talks with the com-
panies to train our young professionals just
like the Huawei is doing”.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started a project named “SMS-based Information System” for educational institutions,
to equip them with an interactive mobile application for broadcasting important information to students and their guardians on
their mobile phones. It is a system of sending SMS by using computer software developed by PTA. It has been noted that usually
management of educational institutions relies on mail-correspondence with guardians, which is costly and time consuming. PTA
would provide this software free of cost to educational institutions across the country.
A formal launching ceremony of the system was held today at PTA Headquarters. During the occasion Mr. Naguibullah Malik, Sec-
retary (IT) handed over the software application along with its operating manual to Mr. Abdur Rauf Chaudhry, Secretary (Education).
The application was presented to Ministry of Education for onward provision to the among public-sector educational institutions.

This software would help recipient to be aware of events like lecture venue, coursework deadlines, result announcements, attendance
details and upcoming school functions or meetings. Since majority of students and parents nowadays own mobile phones and
most of them are familiar with sending and receiving SMS text messages, this solution for information dissemination introduced by
PTA in educational institutions of Pakistan through SMS would prove to be an important information and communication source.
Talking on the occasion Secretary IT &T appreciated the efforts under-taken at PTA for proliferation of ICT-based solutions in the

Telenor pakistan posts strong results for
Q2 2009
Telenor Pakistan has posted strong results for Q2’09, growing its Q-o-
Q revenues by 8% and netting 908k subscribers compared to 597k in
the previous quarter.
The Q-o-Q subscriber growth of 52% has come at a time of significant
industry competition and market challenges. With approximately 20.9
million subscribers at the end of Q2’09, Telenor Pakistan has exceeded
industry average growth and strengthened its No.2 market share posi-
tion. Quarterly growth of 19% in EBITDA in the second quarter signifies
the success of the company in enhancing its operational efficiency
even as the industry struggles with high costs of doing business in the
local market.
Executive Vice President and Head of the Telenor Asia Operations, Sigve
Brekke expressed his confidence in how Telenor Pakistan was growing
in the face of economic challenges in the market: Brekke said, “We are
very pleased to see that the Telenor Group companies in Asia deliver
good results even in tough times.
The second quarter figures re-confirm the importance of this region in
