ABOUT ASIAN PAINTS:

Asian Paints is India's largest paint company and ranked among the top ten Decorative coatings
companies in the world with a turnover of INR 66.80 billion. Asian Paints along with its
subsidiaries have operations in 17 countries across the world with 23 paint manufacturing
facilities, servicing consumers in 65 countries. It has put 52% of shares in its Paints and all over
India Asian paints has business in 23 Countries and the whole team consists of only Indians.

The entire system of Asian paints is done through SAP and it is one of the companies who is
ISO 9001 Certified for their Sales service and Quality Insurance. The whole system of Asian
Paints works on the QMS principle i.e. Quality Management system. Their demand of sales all
over in India differs according to the location, for Example in the Southern Part of India there is
high preference for paints, whereas in Southern part of India their preference is still for (White
wash) Chunna and accordingly Asian Paints production and advertisement differs from place to
place.

Asian Paints is one of those who have received 14001 award for taking care of the Environment,
among 40 companies in a year Asian paints is one who have received a 5 star rating in regards to
(MPC)”Maharashtra Pollution Control” by British safety Council. Besides all this, the
company also undergoes 6 months audit where they only focus on 1 question “What is the
Improvement?”

Since 1950 Asian Paint is growing and today Asian paints business has reached 6 crore and now
after reaching this stage, it has realized to give something back to the Environment. “Seeing is
believing” on this concept Asian Paints started a centre on Rainfall Harvesting and since
February 2005 they are spreading this all over which has lead to increase in the straight supply of
the water and has reduced 60% of the bend line. The water used in making the paints is from the
collected water by using Rainfall harvesting method.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING SCHEME - Developed by Asian Paints has become

the benchmark for Industries. Rain water harvesting at Asian Paint plants has resulted in around
14.5 million liters being harvested in 2003-04 and 12 million liters’ in 2004-05 and used at our
plants. As a result of implementing various water recycling, reuse and conservation measures
in Asian Paint plants, the average water consumption has reduced by 45 % in spite of production
volumes of water-based products doubling in the last five years. Asian Paints is committed to
operating its plants and facilities in a manner to ensure continual improvement towards achieving
'CLEAN ENVIRONMENT'

In view of the water shortage in and around Mumbai, Asian Paints has been continuously
running awareness campaigns on rain water harvesting and water management in the city. Before
taking the concept to the masses, the company first implemented the rain water harvesting
scheme in all its plants and residential colonies.

2003-04

The company was the first corporate in Mumbai to implement at its manufacturing facility a
cost-effective model of rain water harvesting. Other companies were encouraged to visit the
plant and implement the model at their manufacturing facility. Corporate like Godrej, Indian
Oil Corporation, Galaxy Surfactants etc. benefitted from this visit. Also, during the year,
many seminars were conducted and addressed by company representatives to spread awareness
on this water harvesting method. One such seminar organized by the company in February 2004
had over 120 participants along with the BMC Commissioner, who addressed the gathering.

2004-05

The company continued during this year to spread awareness on rain water harvesting by
addressing seminars organized by prominent associations. During the year, it also began to
advise housing societies which were interested to implement this initiative. Many co-operative
societies were advised and given information in this regard. The company has helped in
implementing a unique rain water harvesting model in a prominent housing society at
Hiranandani Powai by using the existing dome structure atop the building as catchment area
for rain water, making it the first such installation in a residential building in Mumbai. Due to the
help rendered to various societies and institutions, the company has managed to influence 45
million litres of rain water harvesting in the city, which is a big saving of this scarce resource.
The company has designed a rain water harvesting scheme for its corporate office in Mumbai,
which will be a unique example of a commercial building implementing a rain water harvesting
scheme. And to provide a holistic view about water management to the citizens of Mumbai,
the plant has begun the process of building a Total Water Management Education Centre
at its facility.

This has lead to increase in Mumbai literacy in relation to the following:

 Gave information about the Water Management system and how it can be implemented

 Reasons for water shortage or problem.

 Different way of water supply and increase in the supply.

 Problem and discrepancy in using the water tanks.

What is Total Water Management?

Total Water Management is about effective use of water. This can be divided into 3 major areas

3. Water recycle, reuse & Rainwater Harvesting

Objective of the twin centre

The main objective of the twin center is to educate interested people with the concept of Water
Management and provide them a perspective on Water Issues. Help people to understand the
modalities of implementing various water conservation projects in all types of buildings,
structures & natural sources.

How does Asian Paints Limited (APL) contribute?

Under in environmental excellence drive in 1999 APL started working on the water conservation
imitative. In 2002, RWH was conceptualized and implemented successfully. In 2003 all other
plants & colonies of APL were equipped with RWH schemes. In the process of implementing
projects at own facilities and also helping other interested parties in Mumbai, APL’s team
developed an in-house expertise in the area of water conservation.

How will the TWM centre be useful?

TWMC will help the noble cause of spreading awareness about “Water Conservation and Rain
Water Harvesting” and enhance water literacy in Mumbai city.
