Jamia Hamdard
 The Founder
Hakeem Abdul Hameed
T he founder-chancellor of Jamia Hamdard was a
multi-dimensional personality, a dreamer, a
visionary, a renowned physician and more than
anything else, a philanthropist, who always had public
service as his driving force. Even during the traumatic
events of the partition of the country, he had a dream of
setting up a complex of educational institutions, which
would revive interest in India's enormous contribution to
the world of medicine and science. The first institution in
the Tughlaqabad campus was Institute of History of
Medicine and Medical Research, whose foundation
stone was laid on November15, 1962 by Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister of India. Pandit
Nehru , in his speech had said that this unique institution
for research on history of medicine would provide a new
insight into India's unique contribution to the
development of Unani-tibb in the sub-continent.
Hakeem Abdul Hameed had realised that Unani-tibb is
a unique heritage of interaction between Indian and
Central Asian Knowledge stream and it was only in India
that tibb had flourished under the patronage of the
great Mughals. He continued the mission of Hakeem
Ajmal Khan in providing new dimensions to Unani-tibb
by way of research on different aspects of its healing
potential. To see his healing touch Prince Charles came
to see his clinic as did many other celebrities around the
world.
The educational backwardness of Indian Muslims was
always a source of concern in the sensitive mind of
Hakeem Abdul Hameed and he took initiative to
address the problem by taking up positive steps which
would directly benefit the Muslim community in their
search for modern education.
Those were the days when education was still
considered to be a primary function of the Government.
There was no “globalization” and hardly any
encouragement to provide funding for higher
education. Private initiative in higher education and
research in science was almost unknown. Hakeem
Abdul Hameed established research infrastructure in the
Departments of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany,
And spend in the cause of
Allah and do good, for He
loves those who do good for others.

Chemistry and Medical Elementolgy & Toxicology and it
was only later that postgraduate teaching was taken up
in these departments. It was due to his untiring efforts
that Institute of History of Medicine and Medical
Research and Indian Institute of Islamic Studies were
allotted adjoining pieces of land in Tughlaqabad area,
despite a number of procedural delays caused by
government departments. The institutions set up by him
over a period between 1962 to 1989 were later
amalgamated into Jamia Hamdard which was granted
the status of 'Deemed University' by the Ministry of
Human Resource Development, Government of India.
With the humble beginning, the University now consists
of eight
faculties,

Unani Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Science and
Engineering & Inter-disciplinary Sciences.
He was very deservedly honoured by several national
and international awards including the AVICENNA
Award presented by the erstwhile USSR in 1983. He
was conferred with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by
the Government of India. He was also honorary member
of the Academy of Medical Science of Islamic Republic
of Iran and Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University,
Aligarh.
Hakeem Abdul Hameed aimed at all-round growth and
happiness to the society by providing opportunities for
education and development of services and health care.
It is his pioneering spirit that has always inspired Jamia
Hamdard to successfully undertake multidimensional
projects for the benefit of society and nation at large.
Jamia Hamdard and Hamdard National Foundation
celebrated his Birth Centenary last year which was
inaugurated by the Vice President of India,
Mr. Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

Mr. Saiyid Hamid

r. Saiyid Hamid, Chancellor of Jamia
Hamdard, has been involved with the
activities of the University from its very
inception. After relinquishing his office as Vice
Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, he joined
Hamdard Education Society as its Secretary,
prepared the project report for the targeted
University welding together the different institutions
already in existence in Hamdard Nagar, processed
the proposal in the relevant Ministries and
ultimately secured the “Deemed to be University”
status for what was designated as Jamia Hamdard
(1989). He has been engaged in licking the fledgling
university into shape as Chairman of the Jamia
Hamdard Society and as Chancellor. The Vice
Chancellors of Jamia Hamdard have been looking to
him for guidance.
As social activist, Mr. Hamid has been leading
country-wide drives for literacy and education,
health and hygiene, communal harmony and social
reform. As Secretary, Hamdard Education Society,
he has been associated with the management of two
Senior Secondary Schools and one Primary School.

In that capacity he has also set up and guided two
coaching institutes, namely Hamdard Study Circle
and Hamdard Coaching Centre. Through his efforts
213 candidates have so far made the grade in the
civil services examination conducted by U.P.S.C.
Other activities conducted under the Hamdard
Education Society are a Talent Search-cum-
Scholarship Scheme, Surveys of Muslim Managed
Schools, Colleges and Madarsas. He is taking active
part in modernization of Madarsas both in respect of
curriculum and pedagogy. He was a member of the
Central Waqf Committee and Executive Vice
President of Maulana Azad Education Foundation.
From time to time Government of India has been
consulting him on matters relating to minorities. He
worked as Member of Prime Minister's High Level
Committee on the Social, Economic and
Educational Status of the Muslim Community
headed by Justice Sachar. He served as a member of
a High Level Committee set up on education by
Ministry of Human Resource Development. Mr.
Hamid was also Chairman of the Group of Vice
Chancellors set up by the Oversight Committee on
quota for OBC in universities and other institutions
of higher learning funded by Government of India.
He was Chairman of the Committee constituted by
the Ministry of Minority Affairs to examine the
feasibility of establishing three Muslim universities
with minority character. He is a recipient of Sir Syed
Ahmad Khan Award on education (2001) by
American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin
(USA & Canada).
In recognition of the services rendered in the field of
education, Mr Saiyid Hamid has been conferred
D.Litt. (Honoris Causa), by Maulana Abul Kalam
Azad National Urdu University. Recently he has
been awarded the First Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
Award, instituted by Andhra Pradesh Urdu
Academy, in recognition of his outstanding
contribution in popularizing education particularly
among Muslim community. He is a member of the
National Monitoring Committee on Minority
Education set up by the Ministry of Human
Resource Development.

Dr. G. N. Qazi
D
r. G.N. Qazi was born in 1946 at Srinagar
in Jammu & Kashmir (India). He had his
early education in the Kashmir valley. He
obtained his post graduate degree in Biochemistry
and Ph.D. in Microbiology from M.S. University,
Baroda in India. He did his post doctoral research at
the University of Dortmund (Germany).
He has over 40 years research career in the area of
Biochemistry & Microbial Biotechnology and
bioprospecting of natural molecules. He was
Director Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine,
IIIM (formerly known as RRL Jammu) one of the
prestigious constituent Laboratories of the Council
of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) from
May 2000 to August 2008.
Before assuming the charge of Director, IIIM, Dr.
Qazi lead a large group of Scientists, Technologists,
Post Doctoral Associates, Research Fellows and
Technicians engaged in bioprocess developments.
The research activity of the group was in the area of
Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bio-organic chemistry,
Genetic engineering, Enzymology and Biochemical
engineering.
Some of the major R&D contributions of Dr. Qazi
are:
² Developed a technology package for production
of gluconate salts by fermentation. A
Commercial plant (1500 tons/annum) has been
commissioned in Andhra Pradesh as a result of
this package.
² A patent PCR based clinically validated
pathogen-detection protocol developed in
collaboration with Industry
² A technology package for the production and
formulation of microbial inoculants based on
Consortia of microbial cultures for agriculture
use being produced in multi-ton scale by several
industrial houses.
² Dr. Qazi has been overseeing research for drug
discovery and standardization, preclinical and
clinical validation of traditional drugs and
botanicals.
Dr. Qazi has over 200 international publications to
his credit and has filed 69 international patents. Dr.
Qazi is recognized Ph.D. guide for 12 Indian
Universities and has supervised a large number of
Ph.D. thesis.
Dr. Qazi assumed the position of Vice Chancellor,
Jamia Hamdard on 13th October 2008.

 Introduction
U nder the University Grants Commission
(UGC) Act 1956, there is a provision for
conferring the status of 'Deemed to be a
University' to an institution which has excelled in a
specific area of knowledge. In view of the high
standards of teaching and
uniqueness of erstwhile institutions
i.e., Hamdard College of Pharmacy,
Hamdard Tibbi College, Rufaida
College of Nursing and published
research work of Institute of History
of Medicine and Medical Research
and Indian Institute of Islamic
Studies, the Ministry of Human
Resource Development (MHRD)
declared Jamia Hamdard as a
'Deemed to be a University' on the
recommendations of the University Grants
Commission.
The University was inaugurated by the then Prime
Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi who addressed a
large gathering of students, teachers and members of
the Jamia Hamdard Society on August 1, 1989. In his
inspiring inaugural address, he applauded the efforts
of Hakeem Abdul Hameed for setting up a number
of institutions of learning, which finally emerged in
the form of the present University. He said, "this will
enable minority (the Muslims) to go forward and
help them to march forward".
Jamia Hamdard considers itself to be an institution
different from the others in view of the personal
stamp of Hakeem Abdul Hameed on the ethos and
work culture in the campus. Even those who never
met the Founder are inspired by his vision of setting
up of an institution, which would contribute and
address the problem of educational backwardness
of Indian Muslims. The entire University community
is motivated by the ideals of its Founder and works
ceaselessly for achieving highest level of excellence
in education and imparting of value systems in day
to day social life.
In recognition of the University's contribution to
teaching and research, the National
Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC), a constituent body
of the University Grants Commission,
conferred upon the University 'A'
Grade, in 2003.
The University has been maintaining
a steady progress in all facets in its
existence of about 20 years. The
overall progress has been excellent in
terms of improvement in
infrastructure, maintaining quality
education, good placement records of students in
India and abroad, high quality research and national
and international collaborations etc. With the
continued commitment and dedication, the
University will surely march ahead and contribute to
the requirements of human resource for our
advancing economy in the 21st century.

FACULTIES AND THEIR PROGRAMMES
J amia Hamdard took the lead in launching the postgraduate courses in Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy in
Northern India in 1998. With generous financial grants from UGC and Hamdard National Foundation, a four storey
building with 6480 sq. meter built in area of the Faculty was constructed and inaugurated on 29th July 2005 by Shri Arjun
Singh, Union Minister for Human Resource Development. The help and active support available from a number of academic
institutions and renowned hospitals of Delhi besides Majeedia Hospital of the University make the training of our students to
International standards. Consequently, the job availability to our passed out students is very good and they are holding
responsible positions in India and abroad.

sciences and physiotherapy subjects taught in BPT in
Jamia Hamdard.
MSc- Clinical Research
This programmes envisages to impart theory and
practical training in clinical research. The program is
offered to individuals desirous of pursuing a career in
expanding healthcare sector in India and abroad.
The study programme is based on both course work
and research experience. It will be a broad-based
multi-disciplinary comprehensive study programme
to prepare masters in clinical research with training
in the principles and methods of clinical research,
clinical trials, epidemiology, health economics,
biostatistics and application of these principles to
clinical research. The programme will operate from
the campus of Jamia Hamdard in collaboration with
organization with competence in clinical research
for hands-on training of students enrolled in
programme.

BSc (Emergency and Trauma Care Technology) is a
unique programme which is launched by Jamia
Hamdard during the last academic session 2008-09
in collaboration with Max Health Care Centre, New
Delhi. Teaching of students is undertaken by both
the organizations. The practical training is
incorporated at Majeedia Hospital and Max Health
Care Centre.

A candidate must have:

Important: Students applying for diploma programmes conducted by the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences should note that in the absence of any regulatory body
these diplomas are not yet recognized, nevertheless the students who have done diploma in these subjects have secured jobs in reputed hospitals and nursing homes.

 T his faculty of Jamia Hamdard offers courses in
humanities and social sciences. The
departments in this faculty are well known in
India and abroad for their research on issues of
contemporary interest and relevance. The faculty

This is one of the few oldest Departments set up by
the Late Founder-Chancellor Janab Hakeem Abdul
Hameed which later on provided the base for
establishing Jamia Hamdard in 1989. The
Department is actively engaged in research and

T he Faculty of Pharmacy, which was
established as Hamdard College of Pharmacy
in 1972, is one of the most prestigious
institutions of Pharmacy education in India. A
sizeable number of students of the faculty qualify

The thrust areas of research in the faculty are health
and environment. The faculty members are
involved in research with an objective to understand
the etiology of diseases at molecular level and inter-
relationship between nutrients and drugs. Modern
bio-medical research tools and developments in the
fields of Genetic Engineering , Genomics,
Proteomics and Bio-informatics are being used to
understand the cellular processes associated with
health and diseases. The new emerging concept of
role of elements in health and diseases is also being
studied. Study of effect of environmental chemicals
on health and ecosystem and mitigation of their
toxicity and carcinogenicity are other areas of
research in the faculty. Scientific evaluation of the
efficacy of herbal medicine is being extensively
pursued. Other areas of research include the effect
of environment on growth, development, structure
and chemistry of plants, relationship between

The faculty has a well-equipped Central
Instrumentation Facility, which is open round the
clock. The facility includes Atomic absorption and
Atomic emission spectrophotometers, Inductively
coupled plasma spectrophotometer, ELISA reader,
JASCO Spectro-polarimeter, Ultracentrifuges, HPLC
with integrator, Gas chromatograph, HPTLC, CHNS
Analysis, Gamma and Beta Scintillation Counters,
Ultrascan, FT-IR, Luminescence Spectrometer, UV-

Herbal Garden
Jamia Hamdard has a privilege to maintain a herbal
garden within the campus which spreads on six acres
of land where about 150 species of important
traditional medicinal and aromatic plants, herbs,
shrubs and trees are flourishing. The main purpose
of the garden is to facilitate the experimental work
and to initiate the ex-situ conservation of rare
medicinal plants.
Centre for Transgenic Plant Development
The faculty also has Centre for Transgenic Plant
Development within the Department of
Biotechnology with state of the art facilities.
The Centre is equipped with infrastructure to train
students and to carry out research in various
disciplines of plant and microbial biotechnology.
The major R & D activities pursued includes cloning
and charecterization of novel genes linked with
tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses and quality
traits of medicinal and crop plants; authentication
and standardization of crude components of herbal
formulations; and nano vehicle assisted gene
delivery and expression in medicinal and crop
plants. The thrust areas also include improving the
quality of medicinal crops through engineering of

metabolic pathway; in vivo and in vitro conservation
of medicinal plants; proteomics of host-pathogen
interaction; development of easy, rapid, sensitive,
cost effective method for aflatoxigenic mould
detection in the groundnut kernels and soil; and
identification and quantification of aflatoxins in the
food and feed. The centre has received R & D grants
from various government agencies such as DST, DBT,
Department of AYUSH, CCRUM, CSIR, ICMR etc.

Department of Biochemistry
Department of Biochemistry is recognized as one of
the excellent places of Biochemistry education and
research in India and abroad, and attracts students
from many parts of the country and foreign
nationals. It is equipped with basic infrastructure to
train the students and to carry out research in
various disciplines of biochemistry particularly the
biochemistry of chronic diseases, protein chemistry,
molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, new
drug development, biocontrol, and biotechnology.
Over the years, the department has been receiving
grants from funding agencies, and has acquired
some of the sophisticated equipments and
facilities such as HPLC, PCR, lyophilizer,
spectrophotometers, ELISA reader, ultra-freezer,
inverted microscope, CO2 incubator, cold room and
the facility for Animal Tissue Culture. The
department has successfully implemented several
projects and a Task Force Study (UNICEF funded). In
2008, the department got special UGC grant of Rs10
Lakh to strengthen its infrastructure and UGC
Research Fellowships in Sciences for Meritorious
Students
The department is in the forefront of producing
highly skilled manpower in biochemistry. Students
who pass out have high rate of success and have
taken up fellowships and jobs in premier institutes
and companies. Many opt for the PhD and find
placement both in India and abroad. Over 160
students of the department have qualified various
national level tests over a period of time. About 30
PhDs have been awarded from the department so
far, and currently 27 students are registered for PhD.
Department organizes lectures and sessions, and the

Department of Biotechnology
The department offers two formal programmes of
study, doctoral research leading to PhD degree and
two year post-graduate course leading to MSc in
Biotechnology. It also offers opportunity for post-
doctoral research. The faculty members of the
department have been able to attract a large number
of extramurally funded research projects. At present
the department has eleven ongoing research
projects sponsored by DST, DBT, DRDO and
AYUSH. The current research interests of the faculty
members include: development of biomolecules by
r-DNA technology, regulation of gene expression,
vaccine development, enhancement of secondary
metabolites in medicinal plants, molecular biology
of infectious diseases, biotransformation of

compounds and transgenics of vegetable,

Department of Medical Elementology and
Toxicology
The Department has international collaboration
with reputed research institutions. Some PG
students have also been selected in international
laboratories to pursue their research work. The
department receives funds from national funding
agencies. Most of the students who obtained PhD
degree in Toxicology were offered research positions
abroad The department is also supported by the
UGC under its Special Assistance Programme (SAP).
The Department is also running a PG Diploma in
Bio-informatics under Distance Education
Programme of the University.
In the past, some students after obtaining MSc
degree in Toxicology have been placed in major
pharmaceutical companies such as Ranbaxy,
Torrent, Cadila, Dabur etc. in their Toxicology Units.

(ITRC), Lucknow, VP Chest Institute, Delhi, Institute

T he Faculty of Engineering and Interdisciplinary
Sciences (FEIS) came into existence in 2008.
This faculty was established with an objective of
promoting interface between engineering, physical
sciences, life sciences, agriculture, forestry, medicine
and allied disciplines including information
technology, and to train the manpower to meet the
national and global demand of trained personnel in
interdisciplinary environment. Earlier known as the
Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, established in
2006 to facilitate and coordinate higher studies and
research of an interdisciplinary nature, FEIS offers
postgraduate degree courses with focus on biological
and health sciences. Since 2008, following three
departments have been established in the FEIS:

Department of Bioelectronics and Instrumentation
Measurement science deals with the correlation of
parametric changes taking place in any physical,
chemical or biological system to the variation of some
specific parameter of a transducer that results into
invariably in the form of an electronic signal, which is
corrected for the environmental influences and
processed and displayed in a system, the instrument.
This makes the understanding of the system necessary
for high precision, accuracy, sensitivity, reproducibility,
data handling, analysis, and the success of industrial
process controls. The MSc. programme in
Bioelectronics and Instrumentation at Jamia Hamdard
specifically consider in detail the basic requirements of
measurements in biological systems along with the
fundamentals of electronics. The program is aimed at
integrating the domain knowledge from engineering,
life science and information technology to address the
measuring instruments for biological applications.
MSc Bioelectronics and Instrumentation
(MBI)
MBI at Jamia Hamdard is a UGC sponsored
programme. It is a two-year programme, divided into
four semesters. The program intends to provide
trained manpower to the industry and research
organizations, and aims at giving the students a broad
understanding of key issues of electronics
instrumentation in human health care and related
sectors. The syllabus has been designed to provide
students the ability to use information technology and
management skills for monitoring the performance of
equipments and related issues.

Department of Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary area at the
intersection of Computer Science, Information
Technology, Mathematics and Life Sciences. It is an
enabling technology that holds great promise in
managing and analyzing huge amount of biodatabase.
Strong R&D component of Indian and Global Biotech
and Pharmaceutical companies need to strengthen
their expertise in bioinformatics. The Department of
Bioinformatics offers a two-year MTech. programme in
Bioinformatics. The Department has bioinformatics
infrastructure facility (BIF) with dedicated servers and
computers, supported by the DBT, Govt. of India.
M Tech. Bioinformatics (MTB)
The MTB programme is open for all those who hold a
suitable BTech. degree or equivalent (B
Pharm.) or M. Sc. degree in bioinformatics, computer
science, information technology, mathematics,
statistics or biosciences, besides being proficient in
English language. MTB graduates will find
opportunities/positions to work in industrial and
academic facilities such as biomedical companies,
universities and research institutions. A
bioinformatician often acts in a multidisciplinary
environment with people from both methodological
sciences, and biosciences and medicine. It is thus
important that a bioinformatician is able to master
topics from different disciplines. The course has been
designed in such a way that the MTB students will learn
the bioinformatics process all the way through from
planning the experiments to data analysis and
verification of hypotheses. Besides learning how and
why biological data are organized into databases, and
how to access and analyze the bio-databases, MTB
students will learn how the biological data is generated
with different techniques such as microarray and mass
spectrometry. The fourth semester consists of seminars
as well as the Master's thesis. Graduates with M. Tech.
degree in Bioinformatics have the possibility to
continue their studies in the PhD programme.

Nutrigenomics
Food Technology is the application of food science to
the selection, preservation, processing, packaging,
distribution, and use of safe, nutritious, and
wholesome food. Food scientists and food
technologists study the physical, microbiological, and
chemical makeup of the food, and depending on their
area of specialization, develop ways to process,
preserve, package, or store food according to the
industry and government specifications and

regulations. The Department of Food Technology and
Nutrigenomics offers a two-year (four semester)
course in MTech. Food Technology. Ministry of Food
Processing Industries that started functioning since
1988 has given a tremendous boost to this sector in
India.
MTech - Food Technology (MFT)
The MFT programme of Jamia Hamdard is intended to
give adequate training and knowledge to the students
on various aspects of food science and technology
including the quality of raw material, packaging
standards and methodology, health and hygiene
parameters, processing techniques, storage and food
value as well as educate them on developing
methodologies for extracting useful by-products from
industrial and domestic waste. The course content
puts emphasis on upcoming areas in food science and
technology, which includes functional foods,
nutrigenomics, nutraceuticals, and, besides, the
nonalcoholic beverages, medicated water, dietary
supplements, novel biodegradable material,
transgenic and organic food, good manufacturing and
post-harvest practices, fundamentals of chemical
engineering, dairy technology, and bioprocess
engineering.
The food technologists are mainly required in food
industries, mills, distilleries, packaging industry and
hotels as Quality Assurance Manager, Production
Manager, Laboratory Supervisor, Food Packaging

LIBRARY
Jamia Hamdard Library System consists of a Central
Library and six Faculty libraries. Total library holdings
are 2,03000 including 18,800 bound volume of
periodicals, 35,000 special collections, 4,000
manuscripts, 3,050 Theses/Dissertations, 375
microfilms, 3450 Compact Discs (CDs) including
1410 CDs of books and 584 microfiches. The
Central Library subscribes 50 current print journals,
20 online journals and 02 electronic data bases
(ACM & IEEE) on Science, Pharmacy, Medicine,
Management, Nursing, Information Technology etc.
The Library has its own binding and preservation
facilities also. The Central Library and three Faculty
libraries are fully computerized and connected with
Local Area Network (LAN). The Central Library has
developed databases of books, journals,
theses/dissertations (ETD) and CDs, which can be
accessed through the On-line Public Access
Catalogue (OPAC) by the library users. Outside
Campus, users can also access the library databases
through the Web OPAC service. The registered
library users are issued bar-coded library
membership cards for quick electronic borrowing
of library materials from any of the libraries besides
the HMS Central Library. Library has developed a
portal entitled “Digital Information Centre”
attached to the Library website, which provides
access to free online reference sources, online
access to free journals, e-journals databases of
INFLIBNET and many national and international
databases of DELNET. The IP based access to a large
number of pharmacy, medical and science journals
is providing a boon to the students and faculty
members from a variety of academic and research
background. The ETD database developed in-house
is being extensively used by students and research
scholars to their great benefit. The journal database
is also facilitating the users a great deal. The Book
Bank and the Textbook Reference Sections are also
meeting the requirements of students for reading
materials. The inter-library loan (ILL) facilitiy is being
provided to the library members through the
DELNET.
The library has a very good collection of Urdu,
Arabic and Persian books. The unique feature of the
library is the development of a computerized
database of these books. At present, a database of
more than 38,000 of such books has been
developed.

SYSTEM (CWIS)
Information Technology has become increasingly
crucial for effective acquisition and dissemination of
knowledge. Therefore, computer professionals in
Jamia Hamdard are adopting best practices for
integrating these technologies in support of teaching
and learning.
All the Faculties, Libraries, Laboratories located in
different buildings as well as Majeedia Hospital and
Administrative Block are connected through 1GB
Fiber Optic Cables. Residential areas are also
connected through high-speed RAS ports and
modems using existing EPABX.
Compaq Proliant ML530 server, MS Windows 2000
Server and MS Exchange 2000 server are providing
services round the clock. Five servers and
approximately 500 PCs in various buildings are
connected to main server. University Intranet and
Notice Board can be accessed from anywhere in the
campus.
The University has been provided 2Mbps Ernet
leased line by UGC to access internet. Computer
laboratories have been set up in various faculties and
all the students are encouraged to make extensive
use of these facilities.
MAJEEDIA HOSPITAL
Majeedia Hospital is a multi speciality hospital with a
unique blend of Modern and Unani System of
Medicine. It has consultants of Medicine, Surgery,
Gynae & Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics,
Ophthalmology, ENT and Dental Surgery. Super-
speciality facilities in the fields of Plastic and

Endocrinology and Neuropsychiatry, Cardiology,

Echo cardiography, Audiometry, EEG, PFT, NCS and
EMG. Senior and highly experienced Doctors
provide out-patient consultation. Investigations like
Microbiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Radiology,
Ultrasonology are available. A Centre for
Rehabilitation Medicine provides excellent care in
the field of Occupational Therapy and
Physiotherapy. Family Welfare Department provides

Family Planning Services with the assistance of Delhi

Beautifully designed and centrally air-conditioned
Convention Centre has attracted scholars,
researchers and organizations from all over the
world. It is elegantly furnished and provided with all
the modern amenities for organizing seminars,
conferences, meetings and lectures.
HOSTELS
University has following seven hostels for boys and
girls:

In view of limited hostel accommodations, the
candidates should note that their admission to
University does not guarantee allotment of hostel
accommodation. Annual hostel charges are payable
in advance at the time of allotment. It will be
incumbent upon the student admitted to the hostel
to join the mess and pay mess charges at the rates
prescribed from time to time. Mess charges may be
revised at any time due to escalation in the prices of
essential commodities. The students admitted to the
hostel are entitled to stay in the hostel during the
academic session only and are required to vacate
the rooms during the summer vacations for
maintenance work. Due to acute shortage of hostel
accommodation it will not be possible at present to
provide hostel accommodation to the students of
the following programmes:

SPORTS AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Jamia Hamdard has a well-equipped gymnasium
and other sports related facilities. There are two
indoor badminton courts, two table-tennis tables,
billiard table and a hard tennis court. There are
playgrounds for cricket, football, basketball and
volleyball. The University organizes sports and
cultural week every year for the students where
inter-faculty competitive sports and cultural events
are held.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)
National Service Scheme is, a programme
sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and
Sports, Government of India. Since its inception,
NSS has enrolled students from all the faculties. The
NSS volunteers participate in various awareness
programmes such as Pulse Polio Immunization
camps, awareness about Hepatitis-B, DPT and BCG
immunization, HIV/AIDS, STD, importance of
cleanliness, illiteracy eradication programme,
plantation and related activities. NSS volunteers also
participate in a project sponsored by UNICEF on
polio immunization Blood donation camp is
organized every year for Rotary Blood Bank and Red
Cross Society of India and a 15-day special camp in
different slums of Delhi for various community
awareness programmes.
NATIONAL CADET CORPS (NCC)
NCC unit of Jamia Hamdard is affiliated to 7 Delhi
Battalion, New Delhi. Besides routine drills, NCC
cadets participate in several welfare programmes
such as blood donation camps and immunization
programmes.
STUDENTS AID FUND
The University has allocated some amount as
"Students Aid Fund" which is meant for financial help
to the needy students. A student, whose
parents/guardians have income of less than
Rs.10,000/- per month along with his/her
performance at examinations conducted by Jamia
Hamdard is eligible for applying for the assistance
from this fund.
TRAINING AND PLACEMENT ACTIVITIES
Training and Placement Cell counsels and guides the
students in their training and placement. This cell
keeps a close interaction with the industry and
identifies the potential employers and their
contemporary needs. It organizes Industry-Institute-
interaction through pre-placement talks, seminars,
lectures and discussions. The Cell also arranges on-
the-job training of students by organizing campus
placements. Jamia Hamdard students have been

General Information and Guidelines for Admissions
1. The applicants are advised to read carefully the
contents of this Information Bulletin and Prospectus
and familiarize themselves with the relevant rules
governing the Admission/Entrance Test/Interview of
Jamia Hamdard. They should also check all the
eligibility criteria for a particular programme.
2. Marks obtained which are less even by a fraction
shall not be rounded off to the next whole number to
determine the eligibility. University will not be
responsible if a candidate is denied admission for not
fulfilling the eligibility criteria even if he/she has
cleared the Entrance Test/Interview and has been
issued offer letter for admission to a particular
programme of study.
3. Bachelor's degree signifies that the degree has
been obtained under 10+2+3 system of education
or equivalent.
4. In the Information Bulletin and Prospectus,
information regarding admission is given only in
brief. Rules of eligibility are followed strictly. The
University, however, reserves the right to refuse
admission to an individual without assigning any
reason. A candidate shall not be entitled to claim
admission as a matter of right even if he/she is
otherwise eligible. Furthermore, if any error /
omission in the processing/verification of certificates
/ documents of any candidate are made by the
University at the time of admission, the University
has the right to cancel such admission at any stage
when such error is discovered.
5. Obtaining the Admit Card/Interview letter and
appearing in Entrance Test/Interview, does not
confer any right to a candidate to claim admission if
the candidate does not fulfill all the eligibility
conditions prescribed by Jamia Hamdard.
6. Application found to be incomplete or not
submitted on the prescribed form or those submitted
after the last date shall not be entertained in any case.
No relaxation in the last date will be granted.
However, those applications, which are received
after the last date but bear a postal stamp showing
last date or an earlier date, will be accepted if they
are received within couple of days after the last date.
7. The University takes no responsibility for any
delay in postal transit or non-receipt of
Application Form/Admit Card/Interview
Letter/Intimation Letter etc. or any other
communication relating to admission.
8. No request for change in address at any stage will
be entertained. In case of any change in the address
for correspondence, the candidate must inform the
concerned Post Office to re-direct his/her
correspondence at his/her new/changed address to
avoid any delay in receiving intimation etc.
9. Candidates who do not get the Admit Card must
report to the Admission Section one day before the
date of the Entrance Test/Interview or on the day of
Entrance Test/Interview at the Test Centre itself to
collect duplicate Admit Card. Such candidates are
required to bring two photographs, for the purpose.
Candidates, who have opted for a test centre other
than Delhi, may reach the test centre one hour
before the test with two photographs and collect the
duplicate Admit Card. .
10.The University has the right to change the
schedule and venue of the Entrance Test/Interview
etc. due to any unforeseen circumstances.
11. The changes made in admission rules and /or in
the eligibility criteria by the University, from time to
time, will also be applicable for the candidates
seeking admission during the academic session
2009-10.
12. If it is discovered at any stage that a candidate has
made a false or incorrect statement or used
fraudulent means for admission or does not fulfill the
eligibility requirements, he/she will not be allowed to
complete admission formalities. If admission has
been completed, it can be cancelled at any stage.
13. Candidates getting Supplementary /
Compartment /Essential Repeat in the qualifying
examination are not entitled to get admission in
the same year even if they qualify the Entrance
Test. Candidates who take admission by
withholding information will not be entitled for
refund of fees after cancellation of their
admission.
14. A candidate already enrolled in any programme
of study/class of Jamia Hamdard will be required to
get his/her admission cancelled from the programme
he/she is pursuing in this University to be eligible for
admission to another programme. However, this rule
does not apply on the candidates who are pursuing

 courses under Open and Distance Learning
programme of Jamia Hamdard.
15. The medium of all the Entrance Tests is English.
However, for admission to MD (Unani) and Pre-Tib
courses, the entrance test question paper will be in
Urdu as well as some portions will be in English.
Entrance test and Interview for PhD in Islamic
Studies may also be in English/Urdu.
16. The candidates who have applied as "result
awaited” should submit attested copies of their mark
-sheets within ten days of the declaration of results.
Form No. and Roll No. allotted by Jamia Hamdard
should be written clearly on the back of the mark-
sheet.
17. Canvassing for admission in any form by a
candidate would lead to rejection of his/her
application form.
18. All the matters of dispute shall be subject to Delhi
jurisdiction.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS MAY PLEASE NOTE:
1. Once your ward is admitted in Jamia Hamdard to
a programme of study, please ensure that your
ward has gone through the rules and bye-laws
governing that programme.
2. To appear in the annual/semester examination,
75% attendance in class is necessary. Please
impress upon your ward to communicate his/her
attendance to you at the end of each term.
3. At the end of every academic session, please
check the mark-sheet of your ward and acquaint
yourself with his/her performance.

RESERVATION/ RELAXATION:
Reservation and / or relaxation to various categories
of applicants will be available as per the University
rules. As an institution set up under Article 30(1) of
the Constitution of India, Jamia Hamdard reserves
50 per cent of the seats for Muslims. Relaxation of 5
per cent in the required percentage of marks for the
eligibility will be given to SC / ST candidates provided
a copy of certificate from the competent authority is
enclosed with the application form. Weightage of 5
per cent of marks obtained in the Entrance Test/
Interview will be given to SC/ST candidates.
Candidates will be required to produce original
certificate at the time of admission. Weightage in
merit is given to internal students and sportspersons
as per University rules. Seats are also available for
physically challenged candidates as per rules.
PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED (PC) CANDIDATES
A candidate in order to be eligible for reservation/
concession under this category should have
minimum degree of disability to the extent of 40%.
Physically challenged candidates will have to submit
certificate from the competent authority. The
certifying authority in all such cases will be a medical
board at the district level consisting of Chief Medical
Officer (CMO), Sub-Divisional Medical Officer in
the district and another expert in the specified field,
viz., Ophthalmic Surgeon in the case of visually
challenged, ENT surgeon or Audiologist for hearing
speech challenged and an Orthopaedic Surgeon or a
Specialist in Physical Medicine and rehabilitation in
the case of locomotor challenged. Furthermore, a
candidate will become eligible for the benefit under
PC category subject to his/her claim being verified by
the Medical Board of Majeedia Hospital, Jamia
Hamdard. This board will also ascertain that the
physical disability is not considered as a hindrance in
pursuing the programme of study that the candidate
wishes to be admitted to. Decision of this board will
be final and binding.
SPORTSPERSON
Sportspersons of State and National level will be
eligible to be considered for the benefit under this
category, if he/she produces certificate from the
competent authority that he/she has:
Ÿ Represented State in the National Games/
Championships (certificate from National/State
Association is to be submitted).
Ÿ Represented India in an International meet
(certificate from Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports
to be submitted).
Candidates who have certificates of participation at
lower levels than the above will not be given any
consideration. Also certificate of participation in the
games other than those mentioned above will not be
given any consideration. Candidates who will be
selected under this category will be required to
undergo a trial conducted by the University to verify
their claim. Decision of the University in this regard
will be final.
ADMISSION TO PhD PROGRAMME
For admission to PhD programme, a candidate shall
apply to the University on the prescribed Application
Form. Eligible candidates shall have to appear in
entrance test and interview conducted by Jamia
Hamdard. Candidates desirous of working in
institutions having MoU with Jamia Hamdard will
also be required to appear for Entrance Test and
interview subject to fulfillment of eligibility criteria.
However, NET (UGC / CSIR) qualified with
fellowship candidates will be exempted from
appearing in the PhD Entrance Test. Candidates may
note that admission to PhD programme will depend
upon availability of vacancies in each Department.

and detailed procedure of admission and course
bye-laws governing PhD programme will appear
on Jamia Hamdard website

 Guidelines for Admission of International Students
[Foreign/Non Resident Indians (NRI)] and Sponsored Candidates
a) International Students
1. Introduction
Rules framed by University Grants Commission
(UGC) and notified in its website www.ugc.ac.in
will be followed for deciding the eligibility and
admission of international students to various
courses offered in Jamia Hamdard.
2. International Students Cell
The University has set up an International Students
Cell to deal with admission and guidance of
international students. This Cell will not only control
the admission of the international students but will
also provide necessary guidance for securing
admission. All letters relating to international
students will be addressed to the Foreign Students'
Advisor of Jamia Hamdard.
3. International Students
Under these Guidelines, 'International Students' will
include the following:
i. Foreign students: Students holding passports
issued by foreign countries including people of
Indian origin who have acquired the nationality
of foreign countries are included as foreign
students.
ii. Non Resident Indians (NRI): Only those Non
Resident Indian students who have studied and

passed the qualifying examinations from
schools or colleges in foreign countries will be
included as international students. This will
include the students studying in the schools or
colleges situated in foreign countries even if
affiliated to the Boards of Secondary Education
or Universities located in India, but will not
include students studying in those schools or
colleges (situated in India) and affiliated to the
Boards of Secondary Education or Universities
of the foreign countries. Students passing the
qualifying examinations from Boards or
Universities located in foreign countries as
external students and dependants of NRI
studying in India will not be included as
international students. Entry level status of
International students on entry to the country
will be maintained.
4. Documents required for admission of
International Students
i. Visa: All the international students will require a

joining full time courses. No other endorsement
is acceptable. Students wishing to join a
research programme will require a research visa
endorsed to this Institution. The visa should be
valid for the prescribed duration of the course.
A visa is not required for NRI students. Students
who are doing full time courses, in some other
institutions, do not require a separate visa for
joining part time courses provided that their
current visa is valid for the entire duration of the
course.
ii. No Objection Certificate: Students do not
require a No Objection Certificate, for joining
professional courses. All international students
wishing to undertake any research work or join
a PhD or MPhil programme will have to obtain
prior security clearance from the Ministry of
Home Affairs and the approval of Department
of Secondary & Higher Education, Ministry of
Human Resource Development, Government
of India and this must be on the research visa
endorsed to this Institution.
5. Eligibility Qualifications
The qualifications required for eligibility for
admission to different courses can be checked in
detail from the prospectus. Only those students who
have qualified from foreign Universities or Boards of
Higher Education, recognized as equivalent by the
Association of Indian Universities (AIU) are eligible
for admission. When required, a reference will be
made to AIU to check the equivalence. In case the
University/Board is not included in the list, the
candidate has to obtain and submit a certificate to
this effect from AIU by paying the requisite fee.

6. Admission of International Students
Admission of all the international students will be
done through the International Students' Cell of
Jamia Hamdard. Students will generally be admitted
in the beginning of the course. However, students
can also be admitted as transfer cases in the middle
of the course from other institutes with which there
is an understanding for accepting the students as
transfer cases.The admission of international
students is done in two stages. First, a student
wishing to join Jamia Hamdard gets the application
form and the information on the courses available,
the eligibility requirements and admission
procedure from the prospectus or the website of
Jamia Hamdard. The application for provisional
admission may then be submitted to the
International Students' Cell along with the
prescribed fees. The Cell will then check the
eligibility and issue the provisional admission
letter. This is required to get the visa and to
complete other formalities.
After getting provisional admission, the student
should get the student visa and complete all other
formalities. The student should then report for final
admission to Jamia Hamdard. The next step is to fill
up the admission form of Jamia Hamdard and pay
the required fees. After this, the student should
undergo the medical examination. Jamia Hamdard
also requires the students to appear for the English
proficiency test if the qualifying examination is not in
the English medium. Once this is done, the final
admission is given.
The international students will have to pay the fees
in US dollars. In special cases, permission will be
given for payment of fees in the equivalent Indian
Rupees.
7. Remedial Course in English
An international student who has been granted
admission to any of the courses after passing the
qualifying examination from a statutory Board or
University outside India may have to appear at the
Proficiency Test in English conducted by Jamia
Hamdard or any other organization. Students who
have already passed the qualifying examination in
English medium are exempted from this test.
An international student, who either fails in the
Proficiency Test in English or fails to appear at this
test, shall be required to join the Remedial English
Course for International Students (RECIS), or the
foundation course conducted by Jamia Hamdard.
After successful completion of RECIS or the
foundation course, the students will join the regular
course. ELTIS has especially designed an English
Language Course to cater to the students who want
to improve their proficiency in using the English
language. This course can be done simultaneously
with the other regular courses or independently.
In addition, to English language course fee, the
students will have to pay the tuition and other fees as
prescribed by Jamia Hamdard. The fees payments
will have to be made after completion of admission
process. The fee differs from course to course. For
International students, it will be desirable that they
join the course three months before the beginning of
academic session. The course fee will be according
to the capsule of the course i.e. three months, six
months and ten months or more. They may be
provided hostel accommodation, if required on
normal payment of fee for boarding and lodging.
In case student does not get/ take the admission to
the course after obtaining provisional admission,
then the administrative fees will be refunded after
deducting the bank commission and postage as
applicable.
8. Transfers and Change of Course
An international student who has been granted
admission to a particular course shall not be allowed
to change the course. Transfer from one institution in
India to another is also not allowed ordinarily. In
exceptional cases, the International Students Cell
may permit this - based on the, availability of the
course, eligibility rules and permission of the
Competent Authority of Jamia Hamdard.
9. Government of India scholars
International students who are awarded
scholarships by the ICCR New Delhi shall be
preferred while granting admission and for hostel
accommodation. Sponsored candidates from
different foreign governments for training and
studies are also preferred for the same.
Stepwise procedure for admission of
International students for full time courses in
Jamia Hamdard.
The procedure for admission is given below:
Step 1:
a. International students should apply on a

Step 2: Fill up the eligibility form for international
students and submit it, along with the copies of
certificates required and the fees. This should be
done well in time so that the student is able to
obtain the visa and NOC before the due date of
admission.
Step 3: Get the provisional admission letter from
the International Students Cell, in order to obtain
the visa.
Step 4: Provisional admission letter to be
submitted to Indian Embassy of respective country
for student visa.
Step 5: Report to Jamia Hamdard for admission. Fill
the permanent admission form and submit it with
the following documents (in original along with a
xerox copy):
a. Degree/ Pass Certificate of the qualifying
examination
b. Mark list of qualifying examination.
c. Student visa in original.
d. A xerox copy of their passport - duly attested by
a notary.
Note: The original certificates will be returned to
the students immediately after making an
endorsement to this effect.
Step 6: Students are required to undergo the
medical examination and get the medical fitness

certificate. As per government rules all
international students entering India on student
visa have to be tested for HIV and will not be given
admission if found to be positive. All international
students will be required to pay medical fees of US
$ 50 or more, which includes the medical
insurance cover for the first year. For subsequent
years the medical insurance fees will be same as for
other Indian students and is included in other fees.
Step 7: Appear for the proficiency test in English, if
any as per admission requirement of Jamia
Hamdard. This is only applicable, if the qualifying
examination is not in the English medium.
Step 8: Admission of international students will be
confirmed only after verification of original
certificates, medical fitness test and payment of
required fees.
Step 9: Within a week of arrival in India register
their names with the police in the Foreigner
Regional Registration Office (FRRO) of the Delhi
Police.
International students who are studying for full
time courses in any other institution can be given
admission to part time courses only if they hold a
valid visa for the duration of the part time course. A
separate visa is not required. They will pay the fees
as applicable. The Jamia Hamdard may admit such
cases directly but in consultation with International
Students Cell if they meet the prescribed eligibility
qualifications.
10. Discipline
The international students should abide by all the
rules of Jamia Hamdard and the code of conduct as
applicable to Indian students doing same courses.
11. Examination and Award of Degrees &
Diplomas
The procedure for examination, payment of
examination fees, issue of mark list, issue of passing
certificates and award of degrees will be same as for
the Indian students doing same courses.
12. Conclusion
The above rules and guidelines will be strictly
followed. In case there are any differences on
the interpretation of rules then the opinion of the
International Students Cell will be final.
Students will have to pay the revised fee when
applicable. On the points not specifically
covered, the decision of the Jamia Hamdard
authorities will be final.
b) Sponsored Candidates
Procedure for applying:
1. Sponsored candidates should apply on a
separate form prescribed for Sponsored
candidates. The Sponsored candidates will
have to submit a sponsorship letter at the time
of admission.
