Special Session

November 15, 2010

The Montgomery County School Board met on the above date in the County
Government Center at 5:00 p.m. for the purpose of a legislative dinner
with the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors and state legislators.

Call to Order
Wendell Jones called the meeting to order at 6:06 p.m.

Adoption of Agenda
On motion by Phyllis Albritton, seconded by Joe Ivers, the Board voted
unanimously to adopt the agenda as presented.

Work Session
Phyllis Albritton moved, seconded by Joe Ivers, and the Board voted
unanimously to enter a work session at 6:06 p.m.

Annette Perkins shared an overview of the Blacksburg High School


timeline regarding the gym collapse and the movement of students to
different schools. She asked the legislators to urge Governor McDonnell
to favorably consider funding allocations to address the Blacksburg

High School building and to move forward with an Auburn High School
facility.

Annette Perkins presented the Board of Supervisors’ 2011 legislative


priorities.

Wendell Jones presented two important items from the school board’s
legislative priorities. The first was that the board is currently
facing three critical capital projects totaling more than $124.5
million. The second was that the board needs support in obtaining
Quality School Construction Bonds (QSCB) to help fund these projects.
Jones stated that there are other priorities, but said the school board
wanted to focus on these two during this meeting.

The group discussed the specific capital project needs, budget


considerations at the state and local levels and possible budget
projections.

Senator Edwards and Senator Smith agreed to support Montgomery County’s


application for QSCB funding.

Return to Regular Session


Phyllis Albritton moved, seconded by Joe Ivers, and the Board voted
unanimously to return to regular session at 7:12 p.m.
