My ALPFA Story

I was a once a shy student but became a fairly confident professional. Meeting people, especially
in a professional setting, was a nerve-racking experience for me. I imagined that everyone else
knew what they were doing and was doing it well, and I was the only one unsure and unsteady.

Then, one day I received a call from the Treasurer of ALPFA FIU, and was invited to attend the
2010 ALPFA National Convention. I quickly accepted, and thought “Well, what now?”

Convention opened a door, which quickly led to another door. I felt determined: I timidly
greeted students at workshops, whom I have never seen before, and they would smile back. The
next day I said hello to some students again and even gave a nod to a professional down the hall,
who responded in kind. Before long, I was displaying a new sense of confidence. Now, I felt like I
was one of them!

Whenever I wonder about taking another leap, a new job, or a big move, I think back to that
first sense of determination. Because of ALPFA FIU, I became a more confident professional and
overcame my doubts.

Last Week in ALPFA FIU

This past Thursday, March 24th, ALPFA FIU hosted Procter & Gamble, the company that is
driven by passionate people and a common purpose. P&G brings beloved brands to consumers
around the world—including their 50 Leadership Brands that are among the world’s most well
known household names. They talked to our members about the company, how it stands out, its
location, its market, its products, and its job opportunities they offer.

Additionally, the following day ALPFA FIU hosted its general meeting, followed by the firm
presentations of regional Accounting firm Crowe Horwath and Georgia Pacific, one of the
world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of tissue, packaging, paper, pulp, and building
products and related chemicals. During our general meeting, Daniel Zamora presented to
members regarding how to get the most out of conventions and symposiums.

Crowe Horwath, the firm that builds value with values, treated members to an overview of the
firm, which included how the firm began, services offered, which industry they specifically
catered to, their ideology and vision, their relationship with Crowe Horwath International, and
much more. Various representatives where at hand, including audit partner Justin Stone and
ALPFA FIU’s very own Daniel Zamora. Afterwards, members got the opportunity to ask
questions.

For our Finance members, Georgia Pacific presented. Amongst the representatives was Felix
Jimenez, a past ALPFA's e-board member. Headquartered at Atlanta, Georgia Pacific is one of the
world's leading manufacturers and marketers of tissue, packaging, paper, pulp, and building
products and related chemicals. They talked to members about the company, its locations and
variety of product, and how they are the largest private company. They also mentioned their
great job opportunities to students and how to apply.

Last Week in ALPFA FIU

On March 26, 2011, ALPFA National hosted the 2011 Regional Symposiums. The event was held at the
Stentson Law College, in Tampa, FL. FIU had the most members present from all of the different universities
which attended.

The Regional Symposium offered three different workshops for our members to attend, but we were only able
to choose two. We attended “How to Create Your Own Brand: How to Market Yourself” hosted by Deloitte.
This workshop allowed us to work on our elevator speech and how to stand out to recruiters. The second
workshop we attended was “Do’s and Don’ts of What to Do during Your Internship” hosted by Goldman
Sachs. We learned proper dress attire while at the workplace and how to ask appropriate questions.

The Symposium also offered a Question & Answer Panel Discussion with four panelist. The panelist included a
representative from Coca-Cola, Aerotex, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Grant Thornton. We were able to ask
specific questions to these professionals. We learned how to earn that dream job and learning what it takes to
become leaders in our school and in the workplace.

After lunch, we were invited to a lecture by our keynote speaker, Kathy Kringer, a partner from Senior
Manager from Deloitte Tampa. She told us how working for Deloitte has changed her life for the better and
how she balances a successful career as well as a family. She also educated us on the importance of networking
and following up with those you made a connection with.

The best part of the Regional Symposium was the Career Fair. Some of the companies and firms who attended
the Career Fair included Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Coca-Cola, Macy's, HACU, and Aerotex. Overall, our
members who attended said they truly benefited from the Symposium and feel even more confident about
entering the job market.
