Mobile phone anger

I think your little magazine Heswall local is very well produced and useful for its
various pieces of information. Your January issue page 4 carried an item about a
23 year old man being penalised for using a moblie ‘phone while driving; this might
well draw a response from your readers complaining about how FEW drivers are
penalised for using mobile ‘phones while driving. I would say that it is a disgrace
having a law which is so widely flouted. When the Heswall police do make a using-
mobile-phone-while-driving exercise, the spotting officer usually positions himself/
herself on the crest of the hill outside the police station wearing a bright yellow jacket;
motorists who are apprehended should be charged with failing to keep a proper look
out, let alone for the mobile ‘phone offence!
Thanks for the magazine.

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

Q. As a form of exercise I like to swim, however I am

finding that my skin has become much drier and quite red
across the cheeks since taking up this form of exercise.
Any suggestions on how I can correct this?
A. Swimming is an excellent form and of course exercise
is great for yoir skin by stimulating the blood circulation
which brings with it fresh oxygen and nutrients to all skin
cells giving the skin a healthy glow. However if you are
regularly swimming in a chlorinated pool the chlorine can
be very aggressive on the delicate skin of the face. Combine
that with the length of time that swimmers are
often submerged in the water - it can all add up to
a potentially very unhappy skin! Before swimming
consider applying a protective barrier to your
skin such as petroleum jelly, this will help to
protect the delicate facial skin from the chemical
irritants in the water. Visit the newsletter page at

BOOK REVIEWS:
FEBRUARY READS
BY ELEANOR DAVIES, FROM LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Fiction: Trespass- Rose Tremain

In a silent valley in southern France stands an isolated
stone farmhouse. Its owner, Aramon Lunel, is an
alcoholic haunted by his violent past. His sister, Audrun,
alone in her bungalow within sight of the farmhouse
, dreams of extracting retribution for the unspoken
betrayals which have blighted her life. Into this world
comes Anthony Verey, a wealthy but disillusioned
antiques dealer from London, seeking to remake his life
in France. From the moment he arrives a frightening
and unstoppable series of events is set in motion. I
won’t tell you more as I don’t want to spoil it for you!
Beautifully written with some very haunting moments
this is a wonderful picture of a special place and some
of the people who live there. Longlisted for last year’s
Booker prize, a fantastic novel by a greatly loved writer.
Strongly recommended for Book Clubs.

Travel Biography: The Great Explorers - Robin Hanbury-Tenison

It has always been mankind’s gift (or curse) to be inquisitive, and throughout the
ages certain people have been inspired to explore the limits of the world known to
them- and beyond. These people changed our perception of our surroundings through
their courageous adventures. But what drove such great explorers to venture into
unknown and unforgiving lands, facing almost unimaginable challenges and risking
death? In this series of biographies the stories of 40 explorers are described, their
lives revealed and their motives and passions examined. Each chapter is written by
a distinguished travel writer, broadcaster or historian who has a special interest in
the character they are introducing. The book is stunningly illustrated with beautiful
paintings, photographs, engravings and maps so we can experience the adventures
through their own eyes and in their own words. A brilliant present for anyone who
loves to travel.

Teen Fiction: Revolution- Jennifer Donnelly

This is Jennifer Donnelly’s second novel for young adults: her first, The Gathering
ENTERTAINMENT

Light, won the Carnegie medal and was one of the original Richard and Judy TV
Book Club selected books. Partly set in present day New York and partly in Paris at
the time of the Frernch revolution, this is the romantic, utterly engrossing story of
two girls, two boys and the heart-wrenching thread that binds them together across
the centuries. What makes the book so readable is the fact that in spite of being 200
years aapart the two heroines have the same feelings and struggles. Better written
than many contemporary teenage novels, yet with a thoroughly absorbing plot.
