In the news
College closure is announced
BURTON Manor College is to close this spring.
The adult education college has fallen
victim to budget cutbacks at Liverpool City
Council.
Press reports suggest that the college is
£1.6m in debt and that last year the city
council pumped in £284,000 to subsidise the
venue which offers all manner of day and
residential courses.
Ironically, Burton doesn’t even lie within the
boundaries of Liverpool City Council. Once
the harsh government settlement came in, it
became inevitable that Burton Manor would
come under the spotlight.
Council officials are now considering what to do with the grade II listed building which
was originally the home of Henry Neville Gladstone, the third son of former British
Prime Minister William Gladstone.
The college will finally close its doors on 31st March, although it has promised to fulfil
courses up to that date.

Neston Area Guide

CAN Group has been engaged by Neston Town Council, with additional
funding from Cheshire West and Chester ward councillors, to produce a
NESTON AREA GUIDE, primarily for the benefit of local residents. This will
be a great opportunity for groups to promote their activities and increase
their numbers.
The Guide will be a 16-page, printed publication, which will be delivered
free to every home in the CH64 postcode area this Spring, with
additional copies available in public places for the benefit of visitors.
The guide will contain, amongst other things, contact information for
local, not-for-profit, clubs, organisations and societies, from Brownies to
knitting clubs, doctors to schools.
If you would like your group or organisation to be included in the Guide, a form can
be downloaded from www.aboutmyarea.co.uk/CH64, which will need to be returned
by NO LATER THAN Friday 25th February. Information received after that date will not
be included in the Guide. No reminders will be issued, so please act quickly to ensure
you are included. If you do not have access to the internet, please telephone Carrie

Mining history for all to see

Information boards telling the story of Neston’s former coal mines have been
erected on the site of the collieries. Two boards, carrying maps, photographs and
information, have been placed in Little Neston – one at Denhall Quay where the
earliest colliery mine operated, the other at the bottom of Marshlands Road.
In a separate move, display folders of information on the collieries have been given to
all local primary and secondary schools to help pupils learn about this important aspect
of Neston’s story. The information was organised by the Burton & Neston History
Society.
Anthony Annakin-Smith from the Society said, ‘We
know from past events we have organised that there
is an enormous amount of interest in the collieries.
The boards enable locals and passers-by in this
popular walking area to learn more about them. And
the schools information will help bring to life a time
and way of working that seems very remote from
today’s local children’. He added, ‘Many Nestonians
had relatives who worked at the mines and would
like to know more. But there are many other people –
both locals and visitors – who don’t know the mines
existed know and who are astonished and fascinated
to learn about them.’
The Society has previously organised guided walks
and public talks on the collieries which have often
been oversubscribed. An exhibition was held in
Neston Library 2009, the 250th anniversary of the
collieries’ opening, which attracted large numbers.
Pictured: the boards at Denhall Quay and The first mine, Ness Colliery,
Marshlands Road. was opened in 1759 and soon
employed almost 200 people.
For a while another mine
operated in adjacent Little
Neston but both mines had
closed by 1855 when silting
of the Dee Estuary had made
it difficult to move coal in
bulk.

Operations restarted as
Neston Colliery in 1874,
using a newly built railway.
The business went through
several hands before closing
permanently in 1927. At
its peak, in 1921, the final
business - Wirral Colliery -
employed about 350 people.

Have your say on town centre future

Users of Neston’s town centre are being asked to
help shape its future by sharing their views on the area.
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Rural Agenda
and Market Towns team is currently working with a
number of groups in Neston to produce a Public Realm
Design Guide for the town.
Participants will be asked to identify what they
believe to be the town’s strengths and weaknesses,
whilst highlighting potential future opportunities and
challenges.
Distinctiveness and character will also be looked at before a Design Guide for the
future and some detailed proposals for specific areas identified during the work are put
in place.
Local member,
Councillor Kay Loch,
said: “The Public Realm
Design Guide will be an
overarching reference
point for all future works
in Neston town centre.
“The final document
will be used to help
make decisions on
issues ranging from
new road crossings
‘Crafty Market’
to public art and it is
vital that users of the
town centre - including
young people to local

Burton is the
backdrop for
new movie
Locally made film Prelude to Macbeth had its world premiere at the Gladstone
Village Hall, on Saturday 29th January.
The film will go on to do the rounds of UK and international film competitions and
festivals.
Based on a prize-winning stage play, the film version with a running time of one
hour, was directed by Sue Bence and produced by Neston film maker James
Chalmers.
The actors and extras are from the Wirral and Cheshire and much of the shooting
was done locally, with St Nicholas’s Church, in Burton village, playing an important
role as a castle interior. The director suggested that it would be fitting to give the film
its first screening in Burton’s own village hall.
Peckforton Castle, near Beeston, was used to provide a suitable view of a distant
castle plus closer shots of its towers. The action then moves to the interior scenes
which were provided by four locations within the church.
The matching red sandstone of Burton church and Peckforton makes the whole
thing gel together more convincingly. James was quick to praise the church warden
Tony Carter whose help included stopping the tower clock when filming was taking
place to avoid the ticking being picked up by the microphone!

BOOK REVIEWS:
FEBRUARY READS
BY ELEANOR DAVIES, FROM LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Fiction: Trespass- Rose Tremain

In a silent valley in southern France stands an isolated
stone farmhouse. Its owner, Aramon Lunel, is an
alcoholic haunted by his violent past. His sister, Audrun,
alone in her bungalow within sight of the farmhouse
, dreams of extracting retribution for the unspoken
betrayals which have blighted her life. Into this world
comes Anthony Verey, a wealthy but disillusioned
antiques dealer from London, seeking to remake his life
in France. From the moment he arrives a frightening
and unstoppable series of events is set in motion. I
won’t tell you more as I don’t want to spoil it for you!
Beautifully written with some very haunting moments
this is a wonderful picture of a special place and some
of the people who live there. Longlisted for last year’s
Booker prize, a fantastic novel by a greatly loved writer.
Strongly recommended for Book Clubs.

Travel Biography: The Great Explorers - Robin Hanbury-Tenison

It has always been mankind’s gift (or curse) to be inquisitive, and throughout the
ages certain people have been inspired to explore the limits of the world known to
them- and beyond. These people changed our perception of our surroundings through
their courageous adventures. But what drove such great explorers to venture into
unknown and unforgiving lands, facing almost unimaginable challenges and risking
death? In this series of biographies the stories of 40 explorers are described, their
lives revealed and their motives and passions examined. Each chapter is written by
a distinguished travel writer, broadcaster or historian who has a special interest in
the character they are introducing. The book is stunningly illustrated with beautiful
paintings, photographs, engravings and maps so we can experience the adventures
through their own eyes and in their own words. A brilliant present for anyone who
loves to travel.

Teen Fiction: Revolution- Jennifer Donnelly

This is Jennifer Donnelly’s second novel for young adults: her first, The Gathering
Light, won the Carnegie medal and was one of the original Richard and Judy TV
Book Club selected books. Partly set in present day New York and partly in Paris at
the time of the Frernch revolution, this is the romantic, utterly engrossing story of
two girls, two boys and the heart-wrenching thread that binds them together across
the centuries. What makes the book so readable is the fact that in spite of being 200
years aapart the two heroines have the same feelings and struggles. Better written
than many contemporary teenage novels, yet with a thoroughly absorbing plot.
