Precautions
Installation
Avoid placing the drive in a location subject to:
• high humidity
• high temperature
• excessive dust
• mechanical vibration
• direct sunlight

Use the drive in a horizontal position. Do not use it in a vertical or tilted

position.

Operation
Do not move the drive during operation. This may cause it to malfunction
during reading or writing.
Avoid exposing the drive to sudden changes in temperature as condensation
may form on the lens inside the drive. Should the surrounding temperature
suddenly rise while the drive is on, wait at least one hour before you turn
off the power. Operating the drive immediately after a sudden increase in E
temperature may result in a malfunction during reading or writing.

Transportation
Keep the original packing materials for future transport of the drive.
Remove the disc before moving the drive. If you take the drive out of the
computer, repack it as you received it.

Installing the Hardware

Setting the Jumpers

The following paragraphs provide information on how to configure the
jumpers by placing jumpers (short plugs) in various combinations on the
jumper pins on the rear panel.

Jumper

Setting the SCSI ID Number

You set the SCSI ID number for the CD•SpeedWriter by placing jumpers
in various combinations on jumper pin pairs S0, S1, and S2. The
following table indicates the appropriate pin combinations. “On”
indicates that you should place a jumper on the specified jumper pins.
“Off” indicates that you should not place a jumper on the specified pins.
For example, to set the CD•SpeedWriter to SCSI ID 5, you would place
jumpers on jumper pins S0 and S2.
The factory default setting is SCSI ID 6.

SCSI ID S0 S1 S2
0 Off Off Off
1 On Off Off
2 Off On Off
3 On On Off
4 Off Off On
5 On Off On
6 Off On On
7 On On On

Setting the Parity Switch

If jumper pin S3 is off, an odd parity check is performed for the input
data. If S3 is closed, no parity check is performed. The factory default
setting is off.

10
Termination
If jumper pin S4 is off, the CD•SpeedWriter is terminated; if S4 is closed,
the CD•SpeedWriter is not terminated. You must terminate the end of
the SCSI bus; however, do not terminate drives that are not located at the
end of the SCSI bus. The factory default setting is open.

Logical Block Size

If jumper pin S6 is off, the drive will operate at 2,048 bytes per logical
block. If S6 is closed, it will operate at 512 bytes per logical block. The
number of bytes per logical block can be changed using Mode Select
command. The factory default setting is open.

Test Mode
If jumper pin S7 is on, the drive will enter test mode upon power up.
This jumper pin is intended for Smart and Friendly factory use only.
E
Drive Mounting Orientation
The CD•SpeedWriter drive should be mounted in your personal
computer horizontally. Install the drive horizontally so that the eject
button is located on the right side of the unit.

Installing the Hardware

Connecting the CD•SpeedWriter CD-Recorder

to Your Computer
Installation of the SCSI 2 Host Adapter
1 Turn off and unplug your computer.

2 Remove the computer’s cover. (You’ll probably have to remove a

few screws to do this.) Consult your computer owner’s manual for
more detailed information.

3 Install the supplied SCSI 2 host adapter in an available expansion

slot.

The default settings are suitable for most installations. If IRQ 11 or

I/O Port Address 340h- 35Fh conflict with another adapter in your
system, refer to the Jumper Selection page in the installation guide
that came with the SCSI 2 host adapter.

Installation of the CD-Recorder

1 Determine which 5.25” drive bay you will be using.
• If your computer case requires AT rails, install the AT rails to the
CD-Recorder. (Note, rails are not included.)
• If necessary, change the CD-Recorder SCSI ID (to avoid conflicts
with other devices), by setting the jumpers to ON or OFF
according to the chart on page 10 of this manual. The default
SCSI ID number is six (6).
2 Slide the drive into the bay, making sure you don’t let the drive
touch any electronic components in the computer.

Secure Drive with 3mm Screws

12
3 Connect one end of the 50-pin ribbon cable to the 50-pin SCSI
connector on the back of the CD-Recorder.
Connect the other end of the ribbon cable to the 50-pin internal
SCSI connector of the SCSI 2 host adapter again aligning pin 1 to
pin 1.
Note
Pin 1 of the cable (marked red) must be oriented toward pin 1 of
the
CD-Recorder connector. The cable connector is keyed so that it fits
in only one way.
4 Connect an available power harness from the internal power
supply of the computer to the four-pin power connector on the
back of the CD-Recorder. This is on the right side when you look
at the back.
5 Replace and secure the computer cover.

6 Reconnect the peripheral cables and then the power cable, and then
start your computer.

E
Adding the SCSI 2 Host Adapter to Windows 95
1 Turn on your computer.
2 Go to Control Panel.

3 Choose Add New Hardware. This will bring up the Add New
Hardware Wizard. The wizard will help you quickly install new
hardware into Windows 95.

4 Choose Next. The wizard will now prompt you to let it search for
new hardware. Click No and select Next. Select SCSI controllers
and click Next again.

5 Under Adaptec Select “AHA 1510 SCSI Host Adapter” and click
Next.

13
Installing the Hardware

6 The wizard will now display a screen with the resource settings it
can use for your SCSI controller. If you have installed the card
using the default settings, this screen should show:
input/output range 340h - 35Fh
interrupt request 11
If it shows something else, you might already be using these
resources and should change the settings on your SCSI 2 host
adapter. Select Next.
7 Your system may prompt you to insert your Windows 95 CD. If it
says you already have a more recent driver loaded, keep the more
current driver. Re-start your computer.

SCSI 2 Host Adapter and Drive Detected?

The SCSI 2 host adapter should now appear in Device Manager under SCSI
Controllers as an AHA 1510.

The CD•SpeedWriter should now appear in Device Manager under CD-ROMs.

If both are seen with no conflicts or exclamation marks, your host adapter and
drive are installed properly. Install software from the Smart and Friendly
Software Suite CD. Your installation is complete.

Adding the SCSI 2 Host Adapter to Windows NT

1 Turn on your computer.

2 Go to Control Panel

3 Choose SCSI Adapters

4 Click on Drivers Tab

5 Click “Add”

6 Choose Adaptec under manufacturer

7 Choose AVA 1515

8 Click “OK”

9 System will prompt you to restart

14
To Resolve an IRQ Conflict
If the SCSI 2 host adapter is not detected or is shown in Device Manager with a
yellow ! or red X you most likely have an IRQ conflict.

1 Go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager in Windows 95. Highlight

Computer at the top of the list and click on Properties.
2 From the list of IRQ requests, note the availability IRQ’s 9, 10, 11 & 12.
Your SCSI host adapter defaults to IRQ 11, but can use any of the other
three if available.
3 Click on Input/Output at the top of the list. Scroll down and check
availability of I/O address 340h - if it is not listed, it is available for our
use. If 340h is listed, check availability of 140h.

If all IRQ or I/O Address options are already in use, you will need to
remove or change the settings for one of the other devices; or get another
SCSI 2 host adapter offering a wider range of IRQ and Address options.

4 Double Click on SCSI Controllers and highlight the Adaptec AHA 1510
SCSI Controller. Check Resources and Choose Change.
5 Using the up and down arrow keys, change the IRQ or I/O Address
settings to ones with no known conflicts.
6 Shut down your system and make the appropriate IRQ or I/O Address E
jumper changes on the SCSI 2 host adapter. Now re-start your computer.

CD-RECORDABLE COMPILATION SYSTEM
CDR Disc Jockey for Windows® 95 and NT 4.0 Links
Smart and Friendly CD-Recorders and
CD-ROM Jukeboxes to Create a Complete
Audio Compilation System

CDR Disc Jockey, provides a simple, point-and-click interface to record a customized

compilation of tracks. Combined with Smart and Friendly CD-Recorders and
CD-ROM Jukeboxes, this new software creates a complete compilation recording
system. This software is included at no charge with your Smart and Friendly
CD-Recorder.

Anyone who wants to use a CD-Recorder to compile selections will appreciate

CDR Disc Jockey.

The technology built into the software ensures that the compilation disc will not
have any ‘pops’ or ‘clicks’ between tracks. CDR Disc Jockey provides interfaces
for both the CD-Recorder and the CD-ROM Jukebox. The jukebox interface lists
the tracks on each disc loaded using the Microsoft CD Player included with
Windows® 95 and NT 4.0. To select a track for recording a compilation, the user
first clicks on the title of the track, then clicks a button in CDR Disc Jockey controlling
the CD-Recorder. Each track selected appears in CDR Disc Jockey.
