Unemployment Main Focus of NUL ‘State of Black
America Report’
Job creation and unemployment are at the heart of the 2011
installment of the National Urban League’s “State of Black
America” report.
In a conference call March 25, Marc Morial, CEO and
president of the league, and Valerie Wilson of the National
Urban League’s Policy Institute, said the report will zero in
on how “Black America has been battered by this recession,”
how small business owners are surviving through the tough
economic climate and how “imposing extreme budget cuts”
will affect Blacks.
The prospect of a reduction of the federal budget when
Congress reconvened March 28 could mean the loss of 500,000
to 700,000 jobs this year, Morial said, due to “extreme budget
cuts.”
The report, released every year by the
Urban League, reveals disparities between
Blacks and Whites “with regard to housing,
education, social justice, health and
economics,” according to the organization,
which reported finding “extreme disparity
rates” in the economy between the races,
according to Wilson.
“Economics and social justice are in grave
condition,” she said.
Wilson added that the report found that
more African-American families were not
able to get their children to a doctor due to job
inequality. Additionally, household earnings
declined among both Whites and Blacks.
The release of the report this week comes
after a town hall meeting at Howard University, March 29
through March 31, which will be moderated by Black political
analysts Jeff Johnson and Roland Martin.

Controversial Ad Featuring Serena Williams Shelved
A racy video game ad featuring Serena Williams won’t be
aired on broadcast television after the game’s developer said it
was too risqué.
The ad for “Top Spin 4” features Williams as “the world’s
sexiest tennis player” facing off against Rileah Vanderbilt,
an actress labeled “the world’s sexiest tennis gamer.” The
scantily-clad women make suggestive facial expressions,
motions and moaning while showing lots of skin, to the tune of
a techno soundtrack.
The public response to the ad, after Vanderbilt allegedly
introduced it to cyberspace through her Twitter account, was
negative. As a result, 2K Sports, the game’s developer, canned
the commercial and distanced itself from it.
“As part of the process for creating marketing campaigns
to support our titles, we pursue a variety of creative avenues,”
the company said in a statement. “This video is not part of
the title’s final marketing campaign and its distribution was
unauthorized.”
However, to some people, 2K Sports’ response rings hollow.
Many say that the company was behind the ad from the start,
but didn’t want to deal with the negative attention it brought.
“2K Sports deliberately created an absurdly racy ad to drum
up interest in the game but didn’t have the courage to officially
endorse the commercial because of possible public backlash,” a
commentary on the website Sports by Brooks said.

Woman Receives Apology
Nearly 70 years after an African-American woman from
Alabama was gang-raped by a group of White men, state
officials and the current mayor of the town where the crime

satisfied. “While I’m pleased with the mayor’s apology, it’s

[going to] get a resolution in to the state, but I never heard the
mayor say that he was going to present it to the city council.
He just said it must come from the city council. He never said
anything about when he was [going to] do it.”
Grimsley said at the event that he would attempt to
introduce a House resolution for a state apology to Taylor
before the legislative session adjourns.
Taylor’s story generated national attention following the
release of the book, At the Dark End of the Street: Black
Women, Rape and Resistance, which details her story. Shortly
thereafter, social activist website Change.org issued a petition
demanding an official apology. As of March 25, the site has
received more than 15,680 signatures.

apparently, only barely can
be described as “chocolate
city” since the African-
American population is only
a scant majority in the city.

has ever been with a Norman
Rockwell-type White family
(two kids, intact family, dog) living in Barry’s old house.
Those of us who live in and love the District are amazed,
amused and sometimes apoplectic about the changes. A gay bar
where the barbershop used to be? A neighborhood restaurant
where the waitress seats Whites before African Americans? Ch-
ch-ch-ch changes, goes the song, and so it goes.
Another headline: Detroit has lost 25 percent of its
population, mostly due to Black folk moving out. Detroit was
a city—is a city—that has been a fulcrum of Black working
class, middle-class hegemony. You didn’t have to have a
college degree to make six figures in Detroit; all you had to
have was an ability to make it work on the assembly line, to
work overtime, to join a union, stick with the union, have
integrity, master your craft. To be sure, there were six-figure
professionals in Motown, but the beauty of Detroit is that the
average Black man or woman could make it just by being
persistent and insistent. With the denouncement of the auto
industry that is no longer the case. Detroit has been failing for
more than this last decade, and now there is numerical evidence

April 4 marks the somber anniversary of the assassination of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968.
Too often, sadly, Dr. King is remembered more for his
famous “Mountaintop” speech than the cause he died for.
Forty-three years ago next week, Dr. King stood shoulder-to-
shoulder with 1,375 Black Memphis sanitation workers and
with the African-American community that overwhelmingly
supported their strike for dignity. Their demand went far
beyond higher pay and better working conditions. It rested on
the right to be treated with dignity by negotiating collectively
with their boss – the White mayor of Memphis. Their fight for
respect was captured in the defiant slogan “I AM A MAN.”
Forty-three years after the tumultuous events in Memphis, it
seems like we have forgotten our history. The job benefits many

In the case of Libya’s Moammar Gaddafi, he has been
considered both friend and foe.
Libya, a mostly desert country about four times the size of
California, was divided into three different provinces, each with
deep tribal tension, until a Gaddafi-led revolution ousted its
former king in 1969. Even Gaddafi’s severest critics concede
that he has used Libya’s newly-discovered oil wealth to uplift
the poor, improving hospitals and schools. But detractors say
he runs an oppressive regime, where political opponents are
victims of public hangings.
Gaddafi became an international pariah 25 years ago. In
1986, the Reagan administration accused Libyan agents of
bombing a disco in Berlin, Germany, in which two American

all in equal swirls)? Mayors who could

Mayors who could be counted on to
deliver on the interests of African-
American people now have to listen to
others. When the interests of African Americans clash with the
interests of others, what does a mayor intent on re-election do?
We are not post-racial, yet, but cities are exhibiting post-
racial living patterns. The world is no longer a narrow White
or Black occasion, it is Neapolitan, with Latino and Asian folk
claiming space that they deserve. Will African Americans play
well with those who are neither White nor Black, just here and
pursuing the American dream? Will the new alliances be non-
White, or will they be non-Black? Is there a danger that African
Americans, now the third largest population group after
Whites and Latinos, will be pushed back to the periphery of
political and economic representation? Will there be those who,
insensitive to our nation’s racial history, assert that the playing
field now is level, even though it never was?
In those cities where African-American majorities are being
minimized, it is clear that Whites that embrace the concept of
civic engagement vote more regularly and more passionately
insurance – had to be demanded and fought for. Today, as we see
in Wisconsin, Ohio and across the nation, the fight is still on.
So, I’ve asked myself, “What would Dr. King say today
about another struggle between a powerful, [seemingly]
untrustworthy employer, Wal-Mart, and communities that
demand tangible benefits beyond convenient shopping and low-
wage jobs?” I believe Dr. King would say the campaign here
in Washington to hold Wal-Mart accountable is just. Surely,
the largest retailer in the world, with annual profits of $13
billion, has the capacity to pay its employees a living wage to
raise their families in a decent fashion. But while Wal-Mart
has changed the face of retail across the globe, the company
also has set a standard of low wages, of shortchanging working
people, and of not keeping its word.
Last year when Wal-Mart opened two stores in Chicago,
the company publicly reneged on two issues that were key
to securing city approval: wages and union labor. A Business
Week article (June 24, 2010) showed that immediately after
receiving the City Council’s approval in exchange for agreeing
to pay starting wages of $8.75 per hour with a 40-cent pay raise
after one year employment, Wal-Mart representatives claimed
that no deals had been made and wages would be “based on
performance.” I believe Dr. King would call on Wal-Mart to do
better… to take the high road, not the low road.
I strongly believe it would be unwise for our elected leaders,
community groups and residents to welcome Wal-Mart to
soldiers were killed. Reagan retaliated by bombing Libya. In
the process, dozens of innocent civilians were killed, including
Gaddafi’s adopted infant daughter.
Two years later, Libya experienced the wrath of the
international community after it was suspected of bombing Pan
Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, resulting in the deaths
of 270 people. In 1992, the United Nations applied sanctions
against Libya for failing to turn over two suspects in the bombing.
Beginning in 1998, when Libya became the first nation
to issue an international arrest warrant for Osama bin Laden,
it took a series of high-profile actions to repair its tarnished
international reputation.
In 1999, Gaddafi turned over two suspects in the Pan Am
bombing, prompting the U.N. to lift economic sanctions against
Libya. Two years later, when the two suspects were found
guilty of murder, Gaddafi condemned the Sept. 11 attacks and
urged his fellow citizens to donate blood to the victims. The
U.N. made additional concessions in 2003 by lifting travel
and weapons bans against Libya after it formally accepted
responsibility for the Pan Am bombing. Libya paid more than
$2 billion to settle claims by the victims’ families.
In another step toward regaining international respectability,
Libya disbanded its nuclear program and provided the CIA
with information that helped uncover a nuclear underground
market in Europe. President George W. Bush, eyeing Libya as
a potential partner in the war against terrorism, lifted most U.S.
trade sanctions in 2004.
Describing the newly-thawed relationship, the Los Angeles
Times, which spells the Libyan leader’s last name differently
from most news outlets, observed: “As it struggles to combat
Islamic terrorist networks, the Bush administration has quietly
built an intelligence alliance with Libyan leader Moammar
Kadafi, a onetime bitter enemy the U.S. had tried for years to
isolate, topple or kill.
“Kadafi has helped the U.S. pursue Al Qaeda’s network in
North Africa by turning radicals over to neighboring pro-Western

than some African Americans do. Why else is there a White
majority on the City Council in Washington, D.C.? White folk
vote, and they write, and they show up at meetings. Many
Black folk, overwhelmed by the challenges of daily life, don’t
vote but emote. Acknowledging income and life experience
differences, there are reasons for different voting and civic
engagement patterns. The results, however, have long-term
political consequences.
The new demographics require African-American people to
be fully engaged in civic life. They require us to take hold of
our destiny. Fewer Black folks in D.C…. in Detroit? Those who
remain can make a difference if they choose to. Our national
ability to retain political power depends on this engagement.

Washington unconditionally. That’s why I have joined other
people of faith calling for accountable economic development
with enforceable community benefits if Wal-Mart comes
to our nation’s capital. Why? Because the harsh truth about
Wal-Mart’s impact often belies its lofty promises. Its well-
documented track record of paying poverty-level wages,
driving out existing neighborhood businesses and shifting its
health care bill to taxpayers suggests that this global retailer
will not address such injustices unless compelled to do so.
I am not unmindful of the desperate situation of many of
our families and neighborhoods, where jobs, retail options and
hope are vanishing. But I am reminded of the situation faced
by the Memphis sanitation workers, who – though already poor
– stayed out on strike even when they could have settled for
higher wages and better working conditions. They held out for
the dignity of negotiating collectively with their employer.
Likewise, the Respect DC Campaign is calling for an open
and transparent negotiating process to reach an enforceable
agreement with Wal-Mart on community benefits. Yet, there
are those who want to rush to cash in on Wal-Mart’s promises
of jobs, retail and tax revenue, ignoring its lamentable track
record.
But what would Dr. King say?

The newspaper continued, “In turn, the U.S. has handed
over to Tripoli some anti-Kadafi Libyans captured in its
campaign against terrorism. And Kadafi’s agents have been
allowed into the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba to
interrogate Libyans being held there.”
Now that the U.S. has joined France, the United Nations
and now NATO in launching air strikes on Libya, however,
some African leaders wonder what that will mean for African
democracy.
The international media’s obsession with highlighting only
war, disease, poverty and national disasters in Africa means
that many Americans don’t know about the progress being
made in expanding democracy on the continent. The leaders of
Egypt and Libya have been in power more than three decades.
However, two-thirds of the 54 countries in Africa have leaders
that have been in power 15 years or less.
According to a 2008 poll of 19 African countries by www.
afrobarometer.org, 29 percent of those polled rated their
country as a full democracy, 30 percent of the respondents
described their country as a democracy with minor problems,
25 percent labeled their country as a democracy with major
problems and only 11 percent said they either didn’t live in a
democracy or didn’t know the status of their nation.
Despite those statistics, some African leaders fear the
Obama administration may now use its incursion into Libya
as an excuse to support military intervention in other African
counties, providing a further setback to sovereignty and self-
governance on the continent.

At 92, District Craftsman Aims to Co-Host of ‘Steve Harvey Morning

Inspire Others Through Art

At 92 years old, District
resident Ira Blount has surely
experienced his share of
tribulations and triumph. Along
the way, he's utilized a unique
pastime to help him make it
through.
Blount, just a few years
shy of being a centenarian,
is a multitalented artist and
craftsman. His remarkable
collection of handmade works
that span from weaved baskets,
quilts and other eye-catching
items has spurred much attention
in his Ward 7 community.
But his noteworthy skills
were originally incited by tough
times.
Born in Memphis, Tenn., in
1918, Blount attended Tuskegee
Institute after graduating from
high school. Shortly thereafter,
he was drafted into the Army
and stationed in Virginia. After
holding the position of first
sergeant for four years, he left the
Army and entered into a marriage
that later went sour.
“That gave me a lot of
depression, I didn’t know which
way to go,” Blount told the
AFRO in a recent interview. “I
then went through a period of
alcoholism.”
Troubled, Blount turned to
craft making as an outlet to his
despair. "It more or less turned
my life around," he said.

Blount doubled his time working,
and continuing to add to his
collection of crafts, which he
continues to create today.
He says that out of all his
works, he's particularly fond of
his handmade quilt that he crafted
as a way of paying homage to his
mother.
"She was a good seamstress
so I wanted to do a quilt in her
memory," Blount said. "She had
given us the basics of sewing,
but beyond that, I didn't have any
instructions on how to do it."
Determined to master the
skill, he explained that he kept
working at it and finally mastered
the process. The experience went
on to be a rule of thumb for his
future projects.
"Going to classes to learn
how to [create crafts] is fine,
but when you do these things
without any help, I think it's more
beneficial and the product turns
out to be better because of the
fact that you put a lot of work
into it and it's your own," he said.
Blount added that he's also
very proud of the many egg
baskets he's made because of
their intricacy.
The craftsman's work drew
wide attention and sparked
the interest of the Ward 7 Arts
Collaborative nonprofit. The
organization then worked with
local producers to create a
documentary in his honor. The
final project was titled, “Ira
Blount: The Common Threads
That Bind” and premiered at
Asbury United Methodist Church
in August 2009.
Ultimately, Blount says
before he leaves the Earth, he
wants to ensure more people
are exposed to his work. He's
currently in talks with local
organizations in hopes that
they will feature his projects
in a permanent exhibit. Blount
believes as a result, the pieces
could motivate others to take up
the same pastime and find solace
doing so, just as he did.
"I [would like to] get these
items out to the public, in hopes
to inspire others my age and
younger to work with their hands
and get peace of mind doing
that," he said.

and hear what she has to say. The co-host
of the nationally syndicated “Steve Harvey
Morning Show” has never written a book
and disparages any talk about her being
dubbed as a love guru, but her relationship
advice has grown into must-hear radio for
over 8 million listeners across America.
With her popularity at an all-time high,
Strawberry is set to release her first book,
The Strawberry Letter: Real Talk, Real
Advice, Because Bitterness isn’t Sexy, on
April 5.

she says. “It just comes from plain common
sense.”

cant do things in your own creative way!”
That’s advice from Jordan White, a
13-year-old nationally ranked junior amateur
boxer from Waldorf, Md. White has had an
independent spirit since birth and it led a
string of successes in his budding boxing
career.
In five years, White has fought all over
the country, accumulating an amazing 60-7
wins-losses record while claiming several
championship awards along the way. He’s
currently the No. 1-ranked junior amateur in
the nation at 90 pounds.
But Jordan didn’t become this good of a
boxer by following normal standards of life.
According to his father, John, Jordan takes
on a daily regimen unlike many boys and
girls his age. The future North Point High
School student raises his own chickens in
the backyard of his home, fishes and hunts

conventional habits for a kid to have, but its
real life survival skills that he possesses,”
John White said. “Jordan enjoys being his
own individual. He’s independent-minded and
isn’t afraid to do things outside of the box.”
It was this same attitude that led Jordan
to training outside of the typical boxing gym

most amateurs attract to.
“We were wasting time and money just
trying to locate and travel to a good boxing
gym, so we decided to train right here out of
our home garage,” said John, who serves as
Jordan’s primary trainer. “He was up for the
challenge, and so was I. I always tell him,
‘All it takes to do anything is determination
and consistency.’”
Jordan has been determined to become
a great boxer since he first gained interest
in the sport at age 8. His cousin, Clarence
Vinson, won a bronze medal during the 2000
Olympics at Sydney. Since then, no one can
convince Jordan that he won’t see similar
success.
“Once I saw how far Clarence went
with the sport, I told myself I need to get
me some of that action,” said Jordan, who
fights conventional (leads with left hand),
an unusual style for a left- handed boxer.
Jordan hopes to eventually compete in the
2016 Olympics, which take place in Brazil.
In the meantime, he’ll see his next action in
the Junior Olympics scheduled on April 23 at
Sugar Ray’s Gym in Largo, Md.
“Like my dad says, we’re training for the
long-term goal,” Jordan said. “As long as we
stay focused and determined, we won’t be
stopped.”

The fight between eight-division champion boxer Manny
Pacquiao and former five-time champion Shane Mosley isn’t
scheduled until May 7. But according to reports, the trash
talking from both sides has already begun.
AOLNews.com reports that Pacquiao’s legendary trainer,
Freddie Roach, recently suggested that his fighter would be the
first to knock out 39-year-old Mosley in his long, decorated
career (46-6-1 overall record).
“Shane is a tough guy. He has a good chin and he’s
dangerous,” Roach told AOLNews.com. “He is faster than
[Antonio] Margarito, and he’s a much better boxer. But I don’t
think he’s going to last the distance. I think my guy will knock
him out.”
But Mosley isn’t surprised by Roach’s claims. He knew
there would be criticism when he first agreed to the fight back
in December 2010.
“I know that they think I’m an old man and that Manny is
going to beat me. Let them think that,” Mosley told ESPN.com.
“I still have power and speed. They thought I was done before
I knocked out [Antonio] Margarito, too. So they can think
whatever they want. I know what I can do.”
Famous boxing commentator Larry Merchant agreed with
Mosley, suggesting that he could be a very dangerous opponent
for Pacquiao (52-3-2 overall record).
“If Mosley can get in shape to fight for 12 rounds, I’m
saying that Shane Mosley could beat Manny Pacquiao. But
I’m not saying that he will,” Merchant told AOLNews.
com. “A Mosley at 75 percent has way more offensive skills
than somebody like Antonio Margarito or the previous guy
Pacquiao fought, Joshua Clottey. That, to me, means that he’s a
dangerous guy.”
Pacquiao has knocked out several opponents who were
larger than him, so a bigger Mosley doesn’t scare him. But one
attribute Mosley possesses that Pacquiao’s former opponents
didn’t is speed.
“I’m a bigger guy than [Pacquiao] and he gets hit. And you
saw how I hurt Floyd [Mayweather],” said Mosley mentioning
the bruising hook he landed on Mayweather during their fight
last year. “Manny is going to come forward and I will hit
him on the chin at some point. His defense is not like Floyd’s.
Manny will come at me, and I will knock him out.”
2011 Nationals Gear-Up
for Fresh Season

The main focus of the 2010 version of the Washington
Nationals meant only one thing for the majority of fans:
Stephen Strasburg.  And while he was as advertised during his
10 starts last year, he will be shelved for the 2011 season with
ligament replacement or “Tommy John” surgery on his right
elbow. 
This year’s roster has also been revamped with a larger
emphasis on the defensive side of the ball.  Gone are players
such as fan favorites Adam Dunn, Josh Willingham and Cristan
Guzman. Even Nyjer Morgan was deemed a failure by General
Manager Mike Rizzo and was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers
near the end of spring training.
In their places are a new crop of players, including former
Philadelphia Phillie and World Series Champion Jayson
Werth, who was given a seven-year, $126 million deal. Some
would argue that the Nats overpaid for him, but as it goes
when you are a team that is a perennial doormat, sometimes
you may have to overpay to get top-level talent to come to
your team. Werth is a five-tool athlete, who bats with power,
possesses a solid throwing arm from the field with solid Gold
Glove defense and underrated base-running skills.  Washington
also picked up 1st baseman Adam LaRoche to replace
Dunn. He won’t hit homeruns as Dunn did for his two seasons
here but LaRoche is one of the best defensive 1st basemen in
baseball and his veteran presence alone in the field could help
cut down on the errors the team accumulated last season.
But with all the new parts, the cornerstone of the franchise
is still 3rd baseman Ryan Zimmerman, perhaps the most
underrated superstar in the game. The perennial All Star and
Silver Slugger Award winner is the type of player franchises
build around and this has been the case with the Nats.  He’s
almost guaranteed to play stellar defense, hit over .300, drive
in over 100 runs and hit 30-plus homeruns, as long as he’s
healthy. But 2012 should bring more star power as 2011 No. 1
overall pick Bryce Harper will make his debut with the club. 
Harper is an 18-year-old who has been compared to the likes of
Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez and Darryl Strawberry in terms
of the type of impact he can have on a franchise. There have
been inklings that have mentioned him in the same breath as
Hall of Famer like Mickey Mantle because of how well he hits
the ball. That has to bring a ton of pressure along with it but
Harper appears up for the challenge. He spent spring training
with the big boys and hit an average .389 at bat for Single-A
Hagerstown.
The Nationals will see home action against the Atlanta
Braves on April 2 at 1 p.m.
