AFRICA “365 DAYS OF LOCAL ACTION TO END GENDER VIOLENCE: HALVE GENDER VIOLENCE BY 2015”
Ifo Lapeng Women’s
Movement HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?
• Lesotho’s rural and peri- urban areas
are some of the hottest gender- based Prevention
violence spots . Not a day goes by
without the media (radio, tv, newspapers) reporting about the gruesome rapes of old women, women and girls in general. The phenomena of old women being raped in their homes at night is new in Lesotho
Ifo Lapeng Women’s Movement
IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?
• Yes it is very important. Gender –
based violence affects social stability, Prevention
slows social development and may
cause political disturbances
Ifo Lapeng Women’s Movement
HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING THI S PROBLEM?
• We literally conduct periodic visits to
rural areas, especially areas with high Prevention
incidences of gender- based violence.
We also run weekly programmes on local radio station called Mo- Afrika FM. Its listenership consists primarily of our target market- ignorant women trapped in rural traditional life
Ifo Lapeng Women’s Movement
WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE PROJECT?
• There is no identifiable frame . Each
project is tackled as need arises and Prevention
for as long as possible, provided
resources are available
Ifo Lapeng women’s Movement
WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY INVOLVED? • Our key targets are vulnerable women in all walks of life but mostly women Prevention
who are caught in the circle of poverty
, ignorance and culture. Poverty robs them of the power to speak for themselves; ignorance robs them of the light of knowledge and culture oppresses them in that they cannot question what authority says (husbands, male in-laws Ifo Lapeng women’s Movement PARTNERSHIPS FORMED THROUGH THE PROJECT

RESOURCEFULNESS: WHAT FINANCIAL, HUMAN AND OTHER RESOURCES WERE MOBILISED? • We do not have any external or internal sources of funding. We are Prevention
fully self- dependent and this impacts
negatively on our plans and projects. All activities are financed by members’ personal contributions
Ifo Lapeng’s Women’s Movement
MONITORING AND EVALUATION
• We undertake our own evaluation and
monitoring by way of site visits to see Prevention
if there’s any progress made following
our interventions. We evaluate our impact by the kinds of responses gained
Ifo Lapeng Women’s Movement
WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?
• 1.acquistion of new knowledge
• 2.opening space for debates that Prevention
would otherwise never be debated in
public- culture, ignorance • 3.direct responses from people’s lips • 4. Change of attitude and behaviours
Ifo Lapeng Women’s Movement
IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC PROTOCOL TARGETS)
• Through education and advocacy we
strive to help eliminate the causes of Prevention
GBV by teaching both men and women
about the destructive nature of violence against women and children. We believe that education is power.
Ifo Lapeng Women’s Movement
EFFECTIVENESS
• We are convinced that our
interventions , through workshops and Prevention
site visits have identified loopholes in
issues such as the Sexual Offences Act, 2003 , found to have been passed as law without sufficient public support
Ifo Lapeng women’s Movement
SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION
• Our projects have the capacity to be
sustainable – if sufficient assistance in Prevention
terms of resources is made available
Ifo Lapeng Women’s Movement
LESSONS LEARNED
• 1. Debates on women’s welfare ,
especially in respect of ending GBV Prevention
against women and children has to be
given more attention in the media because we want future generations to live in a better society • We also need to spread education deeply to grassroots communities
