Months of Wind
It’s been a fairly windy March. We’ve recorded 16 days of
wind gusts over 25 mph with a peak gust of 66 mph March 7th.
Blowing dust and sand is a common phenomenon in El Paso
this time of year. Meteorologist David Novlan and Michael
Hardiman at the National Weather Service in Santa Teresa noted
that during the months of March, April and May there is a 42%
chance of encountering blowing dust on any single day. This had
been the case since records were kept in El Paso. It was noted
from a news article reporting on a storm in 1895 (Cox, 2005):
“A Big Blow hit El Paso late on the night of April 4, 1895…by
the midnight the anemometer (wind measuring device) at the
Weather Bureau registered 50 mph and continue to gain strength…The wind took down
many of the city’s scare trees and ripped away telegraph, telephone and power lines, leaving
the city without electric lights.”
Did you know that El Paso averages 14.5 significant dust events per year? This is, in my
opinion, the most unpleasant feature of our weather. The wind does not have to be consid-
ered excessive but because this is our driest time of the year it doesn’t take a lot of real
strong winds to elevate our dust and sand. This blowing dust causes many hazards. We typi-
cally must endure reduced visibility; the dusty conditions cause respiratory problems and

NEW YORK — As a member of the pop-

punk band blink-182, Mark Hoppus has be-
come rich and famous beyond his wildest
dreams.

Why, then, did he agree to begin co-hosting a

new weekly music TV series for Fuse last fall,
a third of the way through making blink's
first new studio album since 2003? And why is
he again commuting from Los Angeles, where
blink is still at work, to Fuse's mid-Manhat-
tan New York studios to start filming 15 more
episodes of "Hoppus on Music"?

The answer, he insisted, is a simple matter of

wish-fulfillment, if not destiny.

"Growing up, I always, always wanted to host

a TV show," Hoppus said as he sat in a bare,
9-by-6-foot Fuse dressing room, which he jok-
ingly describes as "party central."

The lanky bassist and singer, who is 38-going-

"Honestly," he continued, "I thought I had

the personality of a game-show host and
thought I'd end up doing a TV show."

Not just any TV show.

IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

If your front knee juts out toward the ball and you straighten your back leg
during the backswing, you’ve got problems. When your front knee works out over
your front foot, it prevents your body from turning as much as it should.
To see how top players use their knees, study these photos of professional Mike
Pedrys. There are several things to focus on: ABOUT THE WRITER

sure on the inside of his right foot, creating a
steady platform to push off from to start the downswing.
In general, good players rotate the front knee toward the back about 22 de-
grees from the address position, thus laying the foundation for the correct
combination of “power numbers” — 22 degrees for the front knee, 45 degrees
of rotation for the hips and 90 degrees for the shoulders — a 2-to-1 ratio that
makes for a powerful coil.
The after-impact photo shows how Pedrys uses his knees in the down-
swing. Note how
he has worked his knees closer together. The knees get “friendly” just before
impact, meaning that the back knee approaches the front. This image can give
you a sense of the speed and timing of the knee action — quiet, quiet,
then fast and friendly.
