Seven Habits

of

Most Successful People

1
Seven Habits of Most Successful People:

Most habits seem easy to implement but doing so an on-going basis is not
so easy.

1. Begin with the end in mind:

Look at every activity as Y = f(X1, X2, X3 ………… Xn)

Y = Output / Goal to be achieved

Xn = Inputs like Effort, Money, Material, Methods.

What “Y” a person achieves will depend on the quality of his inputs like X1,
X2, X3 …………Xn

How does a person improve the quality of his inputs?

• Benchmarking (Identifying & Implementing Best Practices)

• Careful Planning

2. Be Proactive:

Think of likely requirements and possible failures, in advance of events

through careful planning –

Typical Methodology for careful planning :

a) Define the objectives you want to achieve

b) Specify the resources needed

2
c) List the precautions and methods / procedures

d) Define the operating conditions (constraints)

e) Define the responsibilities and authorities

f) Specify the methods for measuring performance

(in terms of the defined objectives)

g) Monitor the performance using measurement

h) Use feedback for correction and corrective action

i) Anticipate and prevent problems, through preventive action

Improve on an on-going basis.

The PDCA Cycle:

Act Plan
-How to improve - What to do?
Next time? - How to do it?

Check Do
Did things happen - Do what
according as per plan? to was
planned

continual improvement

3. Decide your Priorities:

80:20 Rule

Focus on those 20% which will give you 80% results

Peter Drucker:

Effectiveness - DOING THE RIGHT THINGS

Efficiency – DOING THINGS RIGHT

4. Think Win-Win:

This habit is necessary because achievements are largely dependent on

co-operative efforts with others.

The typical outcomes in any scenario are:

 Win – Lose

 Lose – Win

 Lose – Lose

 Win - Win

5. Seek first to understand and then to be understood:

Be a good Listener – Easy to talk of listening, difficult to practice.

Tips to become a good listener:

i. Listen carefully, with an open mind,

ii. Concentrate on what is being said – do not allow your mind to

drift,

4
iii. Help the speaker by nodding, smiling, etc,

iv. Do not interrupt until speaker pauses

(If necessary to interrupt e.g. if some phrase / jargon is

not clear, do it properly),

v. Pay attention to speaker’s body language,

vi. Take notes, wherever possible,

vii. Do not become pre – occupied with how you will reply.

6. Synergize:

The American Concept: 1 + 1 = 3

The Asian (Indian / Japanese Concept) 1 + 1 = 11

Team Effort will lead us to much more success.

7. Sharpen the Axe:

Human Being needs to continually develop in the following four areas:

 Mental Development thru’ reading and interaction with

knowledgeable people

 Physical (in terms of building and maintaining one’s health)

 Social / Emotional
(In terms of fulfilling the family and other social
commitments)

 Spiritual
(For mental peace and understanding of self).

A human being who stops developing on these aspects will

soon become obsolete.
