1. (a) The resultant of two forces, one of which is double the other is 260 N If the
direction of the larger force is reversed and the other remains Unaltered, the
resultant reduces to 180 N. Determine the magnitude of the forces and the
angle between the forces.
(b) A roller of radius r = 300 mm and weight 2000N is to be pulled over a curb of
height 150 mm by a horizontal force P applied to the end of a string wound
tightly around the circumference of the roller. Find the magnitude of P re-
quired to start the roller move over the curb. What is the least pull P through
the centre of the wheel to just turn the Roller over the curb? [8+8]
2. (a) A screw thread of a screw jack has a mean diameter of 10 cm and a pitch of
1.25 cm. The coefficient of friction between the screw and its nut-housing is
0.25. Determine the force F that must be applied at the end of a 50 cm lever
arm to raise a mass of 5000 kg. Is the device self-locking? Also determine its
efficiency.
(b) What is the different between screw jack and differential screw jack? [12+4]
4. (a) Find the position of the centroid of the gusset plate. As shown in the figure
4a.

5. Calculate the mass moment of inertia of the frustum of the cone shown in figure
5. With respect to the axis Z-Z and A-B. Assume the density of the cone as 2500

6. Derive the equations of motion of a particle with uniform acceleration. [16]
8. A shaft 1.5 m long supported in flexible bearings at the ends carries two wheels
each of 50 kg mass. One wheel is situated at the centre of the shaft and the other at
a distance of 375 mm from the centre towards left. The shaft is hollow of external

diameter 75 mm and the internal diameter 40 mm. The density of shaft material is
7700 kg/m3 and its modulus of elasticity is 200 GN/m2 . Find the lowest whirling
speed of the shaft, taking into account the mass of the shaft. [16]

iting friction between plane BC And block B is 0.25. Assume pulley as smooth.

3. (a) A leather belt is required to transmit 7.5 kW from a pulley 1.2 m in diameter,
running at 250 r.p.m. The angle embraced is 165o and the coefficient of friction
between the belt and the pulley is 0.3. If the safe working stress for the leather
belt is 1.5 MPa, density of leather 1 mg/m3 and thickness of belt 10 mm,
determine the width of the belt taking centrifugal tension into account.
(b) What is centrifugal tension in a belt? How does it affect the power transmitted.

4. (a) Locate the centroid of the area shown in the figure 4a.

6. A bus starts from rest at point A and accelerates at the rate of 0.9 m/s2 until it
reaches a speed of 7.2 m/s. It then proceeds with the same speed until the brakes
are applied. It comes to rest, at point B, 18 m beyond the point where the brakes
are applied. Assuming uniform acceleration, determine the time required for the
bus travel from A to B. Distance AB = 90 m. [16]
7. A 100 kg block rests on a horizontal plane. Find the magnitude of the force P
required to give the block an acceleration of 2.5 m/sec2 to the right. The coefficient
of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is µk = 0.25. [16]

1. (a) How will you resolve a given force into a force and a couple?
(b) Three forces of magnitude 200 N, 500 N and 400 N are acting at the origin
O(0,0,0) and are directed from the points A(2,1,6), B(4,-2,-5) and C(-6,-4,-4)
respectively to the origin. Determine the magnitude of the resultant. [4+12]
2. (a) A screw jack has a pitch of 6 mm, and major diameter 30 mm. A lever 600
mm long is used to raise a load of 20 kN. If the coefficient of friction is 0.15,
Calculate the force required to be applied at the end of the lever
i. to raise the load
ii. to lower the load. Also calculate the efficiency of the jack.
(b) A vertical wall weighs 500 N. It is subjected to a lateral force of 3 kN. Will it
be safe against sliding on a horizontal plane on which µ=0.01. [12+4]
4. (a) A wire of length 10 cm is bent in the form of L, the length of the short leg 4
cm and long leg 6 cm. Locate the centroid.
(b) Calculate the M.I. of the section about XX and YY shown in the figure 4b.

5. Determine the mass moment of inertia of a slender rod of length L and a mass m
with respect to an axis perpendicular to the rod and passing through one end of
the rod. [16]
6. A train starts from rest, moves with uniform acceleration for the first kilometer and
attains the maximum velocity. With this velocity it moves for the next 6 kilometers
and then comes to rest with uniform retardation. If the total journey is 9 kilometers
and it takes 6 minutes for the train to complete it, calculate the maximum velocity
attained. [16]
8. A mass suspended from a helical spring vibrates in a viscous fluid medium whose re-
sistance varies directly with the speed. It is observed that the frequency of damped
vibration is 90 per minute and that the amplitude decreases to 20% of its initial
value in one complete vibration. Find the frequency of the free undamped vibration
of system. [16]

2. (a) State laws of friction?
(b) The following are the specifications for a differential screw jack.
i. Pitch of smaller screw, 5.0 mm
ii. Pitch of larger screw, 10.0 mm
iii. Lever arm length from centre of screw= 500mm.
The screw jack raises a load of 15 kN with an effort of 185N. Determine the
efficiency of the differential screw jack at this load. If the above the jack can
raise a load of 40 kN with an effort of 585 N, Determine the efficiency of
machine. [4+12]
3. (a) Two parallel shafts whose centre lines are 8 m apart, are connected by open
belt drive. The diameter of the larger pulley is 3 m and that of smaller pulley
2 m. The initial tension in the belt when stationary is 6 kN. The mass of
the belt is 3 kg/m length. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the

pulley is 0.246. Taking centrifugal tension into account, Calculate the power
transmitted, when the smaller pulley rotates at 800 r.p.m.
(b) Discuss briefly the various types of belts used for the transmission of power.

4. (a) The section of a beam is as shown in figure 4a. Find the second moment of
area for the following figure.

(a) What pressure will a man weighing 500 N exert on the floor of the lift?
(b) What pressure would he exert if the lift had an acceleration of 1.225 m/s2
downwards?
(c) What upward acceleration would cause his weight to exert a pressure of 600
N on the floor? [16]
