Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit (1998)
-------------------------------------------------------------

The original Need for Speed was released for 3DO in 1994 wit
h versions released for the PC (DOS) (1995), PlayStation & SEGA Saturn (1996) fo
llowing shortly afterwards. Most cars and tracks are available at the beginning
of the game, and the objective is to unlock the remaining locked content by winn
ing tournaments. The first version featured chases by police cars which remained
a popular theme throughout the series - the so-called Hot Pursuit editions (Nee
d for Speed III: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: High Stakes, Need for Speed: Hot P
ursuit 2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Need for Speed: Carbon and Need for Speed
: Undercover) and have sold better in the marketplace than intervening versions.
The initial version also featured an obnoxious opponent who taunted the player
if the computer won the race or the player is arrested (if the player is tickete
d several times).
The first installment of the NFS was one of only two serious attempts by the ser
ies to provide a realistic simulation of car handling and physics without arcade
elements (the other being Porsche Unleashed). Electronic Arts teamed up with au
tomotive magazine Road & Track to match vehicle behaviour, including the mimicki
ng of the sounds made by the vehicles' gear control levers. The game also contai
ned precise vehicle data with spoken commentary, several "magazine style" images
of each car interior and exterior and even short video-clips highlighting the v
ehicles set to music.
Another version of the game, called The Need for Speed: Special Edition, is base
d on the 1995 PC release of the game, and was released only for PC CD-ROM in 199
6. It featured support for DirectX 2 and TCP/IP networking, two new tracks, time
of day variations for most tracks (morning, midday and evening), and various en
hancements in the game engine.
The Need for Speed and its Special Edition are the only games in the series to s
upport DOS. Subsequent releases for the PC run only within Windows.

Need for Speed: Shift (2009)
-------------------------------------------------------------

Need for Speed: Shift, released on 15 September 2009, primar
ily centers around legal races in real-life racing circuits around the world, an
d maintain its mix of exotic, import and muscle cars. It features 60+ cars, divi
ded into 4 tiers. It features 19 tracks, some of which are actual licensed track
s and others which are fictional. In addition to improved driving simulation and
an adaptive difficulty, the game reintroduces cockpit view, the first in the se
ries since Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. NFS Shift focuses on racing simula
tion rather than arcade racing of previous titles. The car featured on the cover
page is a BMW E92 M3 GT2.
It has received better reviews than the last 3 games, Carbon, ProStreet and Unde
rcover. It has gained a 9.0 rating from IGN and the Official Xbox Magazine while
gained a 7.0 from Eurogamer and Gamespot, who were considerably less impressed.
The reviewers generally praised the in-car view of the game and its sense of sp
eed while most of the criticism revolved around the Drift aspect of NFS: Shift.
A Ferrari racing DLC pack was released. It was available on the Xbox 360 for 800
Microsoft Points. It featured 10 Ferrari cars and 46 specific Ferrari challenge
s in career mode.
An Exotic racing pack was also released. It features cars like the McLaren MP4-1
2C, the BMW M1, the Gumpert Apollo and the Honda NSX. It also features new races
, a new championship & 5 more trophies for the PlayStation 3.
It is available for purchase and download in the iTunes App Store for the iPod T
ouch and iPhone, and Windows Mobile.
The "Special Edition" of Need For Speed Shift contains a special tuned BMW M3 GT
2, and an Elite Series track.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert, released on October 31, 1996, is set in an alterna
te universe 1950s and was originally made to be the prequel to Command & Conquer
[13] establishing Red Alert as the prologue of the entire Tiberium series of gam
es. Since then Louis Castle has said that connecting Red Alert with the Tiberium
series was a "failed experiment". Red Alert introduces the Allies and the Sovie
ts as rival factions roughly analogous to NATO and the Warsaw Pact of the Cold W
ar. The game was received well by critics and has the highest average score of a
ny Command & Conquer game with an average of over 90% from Game Rankings and Met
acritic, unlike the title's two expansion packs, Red Alert: Counterstrike and Re
d Alert: The Aftermath of which both received below average reviews for the seri
es with 63% and 70% average scores respectively. Before being re-released as fre
eware on 31 August 2008 by Electronic Arts Command & Conquer: Red Alert had sold
over three million copies.[14]
With the release of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 on October 23, 2000, and that
game's lack of reference to the Tiberian series, the connection established in
the first Red Alert game became unclear. Opinion on whether or not the time trav
el events of the series were forming a separate continuity or just another side
adventure on the way to the Tiberian era was divided. However, it has been impli
ed by the original creators of the series, now working at Petroglyph Games, that
Red Alert 2 takes place in a parallel universe that came about as a result of t
ime travel experiments taking place some time into the Tiberian series.[15] Red
Alert 2 was again received fairly positively with an aggregate score of 86% from
Game Rankings.
An expansion pack to Red Alert 2, Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge was released
on October 10, 2001 to mostly positive reviews. GameRankings reports an average
score of 85% based on 31 reviews,[16] making Yuri's Revenge the best received e
xpansion pack in the entire Command & Conquer series.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, released on October 28, 2008, was a continuation
of the story of Red Alert 2, however the title continued the series' more "ligh
t-hearted" take on Command & Conquer. Red Alert 2 featured a Soviet invasion of
North America with tanks, conscripts, gargantuan airships, and psychically domin
ated anti-ship giant squids; its expansion, Yuri's Revenge, escalated matters up
to UFOs and communists on the Moon. Executive producer Chris Corry stated in a
pre-release interview that Red Alert 3 will further differentiate the playable f
actions from each other and "[play] up the silliness in their faction design whe
never possible."[17] This approach was seen as popular with Red Alert 3 obtainin
g an aggregate score of 82% from Metacritic. A stand alone expansion to Red Aler
t 3, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Uprising was released on March 12, 2009 to f
airly poor reviews for the series with an average score of 64% from Metacritic.
Another downloadable standalone game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 was rele
ased known as Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Commander's Challenge which conta
ined the Commander's Challenge mode of Uprising for consoles.
Command & Conquer: Red Alert (iOS) was released on October 16, 2009 for the iOS
which was a continuation of the story of Red Alert 2 and takes place before Red
Alert 3. It contained two factions the Allies and Soviet Union with a third fact
ion, the Empire of the Rising Sun, to be added in its expansion pack. The game i
tself takes place between Red Alert 2 and Red Alert 3.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, released on August 31, 1995, was the first gam
e in the series and is widely considered as the title which originally defined a
nd popularized the real-time strategy genre.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Command & Conquer
introduced the warring factions of the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the
Brotherhood of Nod. Command & Conquer was well received and was widely praised b
y critics: "Command & Conquer is one of the finest, most brilliantly-designed co
mputer games I have ever seen" said GameSpot reviewer Chris Hudak. Command & Con
quer has attained 94% as an aggregate score from Metacritic[8] with the less wel
l received Covert Operations expansion pack obtaining an aggregate score of 72%
after its 1996 release.[9]
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, released August 27, 1999, takes place approxima
tely 30 years after the events in its predecessor. While the original Command &
Conquer's plot was centered around an allegorical world politics setting, Tiberi
an Sun shifted this to a more sci-fi-like setting against the apocalyptic backgr
ound of Tiberium beginning to assimilate vast portions of the Earth's ecosystems
. In 1998, Westwood Studios, the developers of Tiberian Sun, was acquired by Ele
ctronic Arts. However, EA had no direct part in the development of the title. Co
mpared to its predecessor, Tiberian Sun relies heavily on science fiction techno
logies and introduces a new isometric game engine featuring varying level terrai
n to give the impression of a true 3D environment.
The full motion video is also scripted differently; while the cutscenes of Comma
nd & Conquer and Red Alert were filmed from a first-person perspective, Tiberian
Sun used traditional cinematic shots for its FMVs featuring well known Hollywoo
d actors such as James Earl Jones of the original Star Wars trilogy and Michael
Biehn of Terminator and Aliens.
Tiberian Sun was not as well received as Command & Conquer with an aggregate sco
re of 80% and 73% for the title and its expansion pack, Command & Conquer Tiberi
an Sun: Firestorm, respectively. However the solid storyline, new concepts, more
realistic graphics, atmospheric soundtrack and traditional gameplay were praise
d by critics, making up for its weaknesses.
Command & Conquer: Renegade, released February 26, 2002, takes place in the fina
l days of the events of Command & Conquer and was the last Command & Conquer gam
e to be created by Westwood Studios before their liquidation in 2003. Unlike any
other games in the series, Renegade is a first person shooter[10] giving player
s their only chance to see the Command & Conquer universe from a first person pe
rspective. Although receiving average reviews, with an aggregate score of 75% on
both Game Rankings and Metacritic, Renegade was praised for its online features
: GameSpy awarded Renegade its 2002 "Wish it had been better" award, condemning
the single player but saying that "C&C: Renegade's multiplayer was innovative an
d fun". [11] Many reviewers especially liked how online play encouraged teamwork
and coordinated assaults unlike other first-person shooters.[12]
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, released March 29, 2007, was a return to the
real-time strategy roots of the Command & Conquer series. As a direct sequel to
Tiberian Sun, Tiberium Wars is set approximately 17 years after the events of T
iberian Sun and features the introduction of a third faction, the Scrin. The seq
uel was highly anticipated by fans and critics alike and attained an aggregate s
core of 85% from both Game Rankings and Metacritic. PC Gamer U.S. gave the game
its "Editor's Choice" rating at 90%, stating that "One of the greatest RTS franc
hises of all time returns to glory", while PC Gamer UK gave it a more reserved r
ating of 82%, stating that it was "A welcome, but limited, return."
Shortly after the release of Tiberian Wars, the expansion pack Command & Conquer
3: Kane's Wrath was announced. Released on March 24, 2008, Kane's Wrath limited
the player to only the Brotherhood of Nod in the campaign mode, though the orig
inal factions and six new sub-factions are available for the new strategic mode
and skirmish mode. Reception was mainly positive with the expansion attaining an
aggregate score of 77%.
Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, released on March 16, 2010, sees a big c
hange in gameplay from the previous Command & Conquer by removing the resource g
athering and base building elements in previous games as well as the removal of
the third faction, the Scrin. It is a direct sequel to Kane's Wrath (however not
directly following on from its storyline), and is set 10 years after the game's
final events, a time when Tiberium has advanced to its next evolutionary stage,
and is rapidly spreading across Earth making it soon to be uninhabitable. The o
nly positive comments are aimed at the multiplayer mode. Main criticisms were th
e problematic control scheme, the departure from the traditional Command and Con
quer basics, the fact that the game seemed more adapted for multiplayer rather t
han solo play, the short campaign and the troublesome unlock system.
