TOPIC: Corruption in the Indian Education System

INTRODUCTION

Education is the most important aspect of an individual’s personality. By definition,

education is a more holistic concept than is literacy as education engenders the hunger for
growth in an individual. This growth can be in terms of intellect, in terms of monetary gains or
merely of one’s cognitive faculties. Education is what sets a human apart from the brutes as
wisdom discovered through ages is passed on.

However, in today’s materialistic world even this field is not bereft of malice. Widespread
corruption in the education system has made it hollow. There are numerous news articles about
children being given corporal punishment for the most inane excuses, parents being harassed for
donations, sky rocketing fees which are not commensurate the quality of education provided.

It’s our attempt to scrutinize the various aspects of educational corruption occurring in India.
Evaluate them from a ethical perspective and hence try to understand the cause of these
malpractices.

Corruption in Education

In India, literacy has been defined has “The ability to read and write” yet many of the students
educated under the public education system lack even the basic skills that comprise this premise
of literacy. Corruption infiltrates the education system via the following mediums:

Corrupted systems of Selection : This is where maximum corruption occurs. During selection,
malpractices like monetary donations, illicit favours, extra fees etc. gain ground.

Corrupted systems of Accreditation : Here the system of accreditation of institutes comes

under scanner.

Corrupted supplies: Despite of the huge amount of money routed towards the progess of the
education program in India, its annual spend is still less than $1/year (needs to be verified). This
is largely due to the widespread corruption in developing infrastructure for support.
