ST1021/ST1023 – Excel Project (Period 1 2010)

Background
A travel agency commissioned a market research survey of Irish residents flying on holiday from
Irish airports to the top 4 travel destinations (France, Great Britain, Spain and the United States). A
random sample of 600 Irish residents was selected at Irish airports. The data collected is described
in the table below. The data is stored as Irish Travel.xlsx in the ‘ST1023’ and ‘ST1021’ folders on
the ‘P:’ drive in WGB_G33 and is also available on Blackboard.

Column(s) Name Description

A Rand A random number
B Passenger ID A unique ID number for each passenger that participated in this
market research survey
C Destination Country of Destination:
Fr = France, GB = Great Britain, Sp = Spain, US = United
States
D LengthStay The length of stay (in days) in the country of destination
E Partial Expenditure You will use this column to derive expenditure figures that are
unique to you in Column F.
F Expenditure The estimated expenditure (€) while in the country of
destination.
See instructions for generating the data below.

When you first open the file, the Expenditure column is blank (except for the first cell). Use the
following procedure to generate expenditure data that is unique to you.
In cell F2, multiply Rand by the last 4 digits of your Student ID and divide by 100. Then add
to the entry in Partial Expenditure.
[Example: If your student ID number is 110123456, type =A2*(3456/100)+E2 in cell F2.]
Copy this formula to all cells from F3 to F601.
Save the file to your disk/memory stick.

Tasks:

1. Compare the expenditures of Irish residents between the 4 destinations.

2. Compare the lengths of stay of Irish residents between the 4 destinations.

3. Describe Irish residents’ preferences for holiday destinations.

Instructions:

Use appropriate descriptive statistics and graphical presentations in Excel to complete these tasks.
Report all revenue values to the nearest Euro.
The remaining three practical hours are scheduled for the completion of this project.

1
Tips:
1. Providing many descriptive statistics is confusing to a reader of a report. Select only the most
appropriate descriptive statistics.
2. Make sure the type of graph you choose is appropriate for the type of data you are analysing.
3. You can enhance the appearance of graphs by changing the defaults that Excel applies. But keep
it simple – font sizes, colour schemes, 3-D effects, etc. should not detract from the message the
graph is supposed to convey.

Failure to comply with the following instructions may result in losing all continuous
assessment credit. Use the following checklists to ensure you follow the instructions.
