Dear Colleague,

We, the undersigned Independent politicians, concerned that Independent politics is not
represented in Seanad Eireann other than from the University Panel, respectfully request your co-
operation in obtaining deserved representation from other panels.

There is an issue here of respect for Independent politics and for the fact that, in all aspects of
political life, the public has expressed its support for non party representation.

The number of Independent Politicians, recently enhanced by a significant increase in the number of
Dail deputies, means that it is possible to elect Independent candidates on all panels. We would ask
you, having assessed the Independent candidates on their merits, to support them in order of your
choice and in the process gain rightful representation for Independent politics in the Seanad.

We are enclosing for your information the names of the Independent Candidates seeking election.
We also enclose further information on the Seanad Panel Election Landscape, the Oireachtas Panel
Electorate as well as possible outcomes of a Fine Gael/Labour deal with a reasonably solid
Independent vote. From this information it is clear that Independents (including the Socialist Party
and People before Profit) make up 15% of the electorate with a possible 164 votes, (see Note in
attachment).

This means that in theory at least Independents could elect Senators on 4 panels with a possible 5th
on the Culture and Education Panel. It is worth noting that Labour have 174 votes (Councillors, TD's
and Senators) and 16% of the vote and might well expect to elect 2 Senators on some panels and
one on the other panels. Sinn Fein has 67 votes (Councillors, TD's and Senators) and also might well
expect to elect 3 Senators. In this context it would be extremely disappointing if Independent
politicians did not elect a number of Independents to the Seanad.

We also understand that over the years many Councillors have established relationships with
Senators from different political parties. However on this occasion we are asking you to consider
voting Independent and giving your preference votes elsewhere or, if that is not possible, to give
your preference votes to Independents.

Finally, we believe this is an opportunity to help enhance the profile of Independent politics and to
help establish the Independent brand.

We thank you for taking the time and attention to read this communication.

Yours sincerely,

Marian Harkin MEP
