LIFE BACKGROUND
Bill Gates was born as William Henry Gates III on October 28, 1955 to William
Henry Gates, Jr. and Mary Gates at Seattle Washington's Swedish Hospital. He is the
second child and the only male of three children. His parents were members of the
politically and socially elite, his father was an attorney and his mother was a
schoolteacher and an active member of non-profit organizations like The United Way.
From the start of his life, Bill was very energetic. He used to rock profusely in his
cradle, a trait that is said to be with him today. As a young child, he was extremely
interested in the flourishing aerospace industry of the region and its 1962 World Fair. The
focus of the fair was the future; its theme being "Century 21". Gates was six years old at
the of the Fair.
By the time Gates entered third grade, his outstanding intelligence had been
coupled with extreme behavioral problems. He was ever desirous of an intellectual
challenge, which he did not find in academics, but instead with the teachers and
administrators. He would often receive grades of "A3" meaning excellent work with the
worst effort. This could be accurately assessed as being the beginning of Gates' famous
unpleasant behavior and attitude.
During the sixth grade, Gates' parents and teachers tried to find a place which can
channel his intelligence. They make him involved in the Contemporary Club, which
become very useful for the preparation of Gates' future. Through economics class, Gates
expressed his first sign of evidence of his capitalist nature through a project focused on an
inventor embarking on a business venture and he gets a grade of A1 for that.
Because of Gates' unruly behavior, his parents sent him to a private all male
institution named Lakeside School, which would eventually change his life. Gates
developed a keener interest in math and science. It was during the eight grades that Gates
would embark upon an invention that would change the course of his life forever which is
the computer.
FOUNDATION OF MICROSOFT

History of Microsoft began on April 4, 1975, when it was founded by Bill Gates
and Paul Allen in Albuquerque, when Gates and Allen came out with the idea of creating
their own computer. Bill Gates and Paul Allen, childhood friends with a passion in
computer programming, were seeking to make a successful business utilizing their shared
skills. The January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics featured Micro Instrumentation and
Telemetry System’s (MITS) Altair 8800 microcomputer. Allen noticed that they could
program a BASIC interpreter for the device; after a call from Gates claiming to have a
working interpreter, MITS requested a demonstration. Since they didn't actually have
one, Allen worked on a simulator for the Altair while Gates developed the interpreter.
Although they developed the interpreter on a simulator and not the actual device, the
interpreter worked flawlessly when they demonstrated the interpreter to MITS in
Albuquerque, New Mexico in March 1975; MITS agreed to distribute it, marketing it as
Altair BASIC. They officially established Microsoft on April 4, 1975, with Gates as the
CEO. In August 1977 the company formed an agreement with ASCII Magazine in Japan,
resulting in its first international office, "ASCII Microsoft". The company moved to a
new home in Bellevue, Washington in January 1979.
Later, Gates and Allen created SoftCard which would be Microsoft's first formal
invention. It was an operating system and computer language in one. Within his
company, the Q-DOS operating system was born, created by Tim Paterson. Although
Paterson worked for another company, Microsoft was able to obtain the rights for
$50,000. Microsoft soon joined with IBM to create software for their computers. This
would be the first company to which Microsoft would license software. After the initial
success of the IBM computer, Gates began licensing to other companies like Apple. Later
Gates created the Windows 3.0 Version the would have multi-use features like graphics
and spreadsheets. He also created software application program like Lotus 1-2-3 and
Microsoft Works for the Macintosh. Bill Gates' creations of software and language
programs became his contribution to the revolution of computers and the field of
computer science.
CAREER SUCCESS OF BILL GATES

Every success leader, they have their own secret ingredient in order for them to
became success in life. For Bill Gates there are several principles that he use in order for
him to be a successful leader for today life.
1. Hard work
 He believes that hard work is main key for every success. It shows at the
beginning of his life during childhood time and college time. Also when
he gets to sleep only for 6 hour in a day when Microsoft had started.
2. Had a vision
 Bill Gates vision was:
“Every business and household must have a computer and must run Microsoft
software”.
 With this simple principles that make him be a success leader like today.
Also it what make him won a several respect and be a rich person in the
world for 13 continuous long years.
3. Failures is learning process
 During the time when Microsoft system is widely used, it gets many of
criticism and unhappiness of software user. He never gives in finding a
way to solve it because he said all of this is the process of learning in
improving the Microsoft system. He uses a statement “your most unhappy
customer is your greatest process of learning”.
4. Bill Gates had a solid team
“If we weren’t still hiring great people and pushing ahead at full speed, it
would be easy to fall behind and become a mediocre company,”
 When Bill started company, he only bring trusted friend entered the
company. Moreover, when the company starts to grow, he instead to hired
only the capable young mind and then creates a small and creative
environment for them.
5. Took a long term approach
“In the decade ahead I can predict that we will provide over twice the productivity
improvement that we provided in the ‘90s”
 Bill Gates not the one that search for immediate pay off or chase an instant
success but he coordinate his software for the view of next fifty years.
Also he tries to keep the company forefront of new technology
development.

BILL GATES’S LEADERSHIP STYLE

In term how he handles his company, Bill Gates has use 2 leadership style in
managing the company which is autocratic and delegates’ style.
Autocratic style can be defined as the leader has centralized authority and low
participation of employees. For Bill Gates, control is a basic nature to him and his
management practice. He always had a feeling of curiosity with detail and with checking
up expenses used that usually it signs by his right hand man, Steve Ballmer. Also,
restricted the ability of internet partner to deal with its rival.
Delegate style is where leader permits the group to make the decision within
prescribed limits. Bill Gates gives the autonomy authority to his manager to run their
department independently like human resource. He let human resource to find worker for
the company but he restricted that the worker must have intelligence in managing
software. Its includes capacity to grasp new knowledge quickly, the ability to ask probing
questions, and deep familiarity with programming structures.

BILL GATES LEADERSHIP POWER FOCUS

Task oriented is defined as leader behavior includes setting performance goals,


planning and scheduling work, coordinating activities, giving direction, setting standards,
providing resources and supervising performance. Relation oriented is defined as leader
behaviors that show empathy for concerns and feelings, supportive of needs, showing
trust and similar attributes.
In Fiedler Model, we can concluded that Bill is found most favorable place where
positional power is high as he has most authorities in the firm, task structure is also
defined as he gives the direction to subordinate or follower to fulfill his vision, and last
leader-member relation is also good. That mean Bill Gates is more likely Task-oriented
leader who want performance from his subordinate or follower and work has to be done
to achieve the goal/objective of the company.
Bill Gates also has possessed 2 sources of power which is position and personal
power. In position power, have 3 type of power which is legitimate, coercive and reward
power. Bill use legitimate power in term of rational persuasive. It usually use when
dealing with higher level manager. It included logical arguments with actual evidence to
make other implement he recommended action. For reward power, Bill has control on
over evaluating employee’s performance to determining their raises, promotions and
other rewards. Coercive power is where the leader has the power to discipline, punish or
withhold reward. Even though Bill is an autocratic leader but he never made a rush
decision to manipulate other or to gain personal profits.
Personal power is derived from interpersonal relationship between leader and
followers. It has 2 types; expert and referent power. As we know, Bill Gates is a master of
his subject & his knowledge, skills, expertise is never questioned. That why people
tagging him for having the expert power. Most of people who work a long time at
Microsoft because of Bill referent power of loyalty and friendship. It is because Bills is
more loyalty rather than autocratic toward is followers.

STRENGTH OF BILL GATES

The characteristic of Bill Gates was strength of him to be successful leader of life
time. There several characteristic of Bill Gates that can be follow by anyone who likes to
be like him.
Intelligence
 It is prove since Bill was a child that his ambitious, intelligent and
competitive. These qualities helped him to attain top position in the
profession he chose.
Passion
 Bill is passion toward computer software, coding and technology. This is
why he stopped study at Harvard University to persuade his ambitious for
writing software for every computer in the world.
Continuous Learner
 Never stop learn is a mantra of Bill Gates which he follow until today. He
continues to learn in order to improve the software that fit with advance of
new technology.
JAKEL BACKGROUND

Jakel was established in 1985 and operated only in a small premise in Muar,
Johore. Armed only RM30 capital and two employees, Jakel running a small business and
retail without imagining huge profits. When the country experienced an economic crisis
in 1996, Jakel also get the effects. But because of a good business strategy, it does not
really affect the operational status of Jakel. Who knew when many companies are
struggling with the economic climate around 1997; Jakel was flooded with profit when
able to expand the provision of retail space by buying the Rex cinema to be stores and
retail sales in Segamat, Johor.
While in Segamat, almost every day Jakel received visits from buyers who visit
most of which are from outside Johor. From there infusion to increase more branches in
other cities across the country. Premises located in Kuala Lumpur in fact first established
in 2008. Apparently the business expand into new capital is more lucrative results for
Jakel. The development scale of operations and business networks never change their
basic principles, namely to sell more affordable kind of fabric for all ages. Today, Jakel
emerge as major importers and sellers of textile products to domestic and overseas
markets.
Over the age of 25 years, the success of the radiating Jakel seen in the textile
arena, when the country opened a new branch in Section 7, Shah Alam on 25 April.
Building an area of 7.432 square meters to meet customer demand which does not require
people to visit other places to get fabric. Clearly, the six-storey high building was to be
loaded with various types of fabric suitable for traditional wedding dress. In fact, the
famous boutiques Arianni also placed in the same building for the fans and users of the
lid.

Managing Director, Mohamed Mohamed Jakel Faroz to develop their textile business
empire. Is the second of 12 siblings, Mohamed Faroz is leading a good name so that it is
generally known as Jakel. Faroz sacrificed a lot for his family at his young age. He
rejected the offer to further his study in the tertiary education. He needs to show good
example to his 16 other siblings so he must succeed.
Today, Jakel emerge as major importers and sellers of textile products to domestic and
overseas markets. Jakel great success is when the company secured exclusive rights to
sell famous brands of clothes, including Valentino, Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro and
Roberto Cavalli. Recounting the story almost 20 years ago, Mohamed Faroz, 36, admitted
he was in a dilemma at the moment of decision. But a deep interest in world textile and
dreaming of a viable business as a morale booster for him. But Mohamed Faroz
recognizes many challenges that had to go through in order to sustain profitable growth
companies.
"All that is prevalent in life especially when engaged in the business world. It is not easy
to be successful today because we are forced to compete with other textile companies.
"We need to compete, especially for the supply of high quality textiles. But it is normal
that our competitors try to corrupt and tarnish the image of us in the eyes of suppliers and
importers," he said. "Feelings of jealousy in the competitive business world is demanding
high patience. Actually it is not uncommon in business. When we developed a little
business, people want to drop us, "he added. According to Mohamed Faroz, competitors
are spreading rumors that they are not selling high quality and expensive fabrics.

strengths. He has strengths that can support him from giving up.

Faroz, with his employees share their ideas on how to improve the business. He
also shows the way or guideline to be the best. So from that, his employees will
feel motivated to be the best from the other competitors. This style of leadership
helps in enhancing subordinates’ desire to perform a task because it shares
decision making.

2) Delegating Style

Faroz has already trained his employees. So in any situations, his employees
know what to do. He put trust on the employees because they are able and willing
to take responsibilities for what needs to be done. There is a limit there because he

Tan Sri Eric Chia


“Eric Chia is known as a millionaire in Malaysia and is a former chairman
of Perwaja Steel”

Born in 1933, the former chief executive officer of the UMW group and former
managing director of Perwaja Steel made his way to Seremban from Singapore at age 17
in 1950. Though his father was a millionaire in Singapore where he had founded United
Motor Works (UMW), Chia said he did not have it easy. After having worked in several
factories, he hitchhiked on a lorry to Seremban with just five dollars in his pocket. In
Seremban, Chia found work in a bicycle shop for 25 cents a day before he turned bicycle
tube salesman and truck driver. Chia had always said these early hardships gave him a
determination to succeed.

At age 23, he was sent to Kuala Lumpur to run K.K. Motor Co, the agent for
UMW in Malaya. His father later set up United Motor Works (Malaya), which he
managed. UMW grew to be the country’s largest engineering group with Chia as its chief
executive. In 1987, a rescue of haulage and logistics firm Kontena Nasional gave him the
added reputation of being “Mr Fixit”. However, this reputation would soon be in tatters
when the erstwhile Mr Fixit was chosen by the Government to turn around loss-making
Perwaja Steel in 1988.
The ensuing episode saw Chia resigning as managing director of Perwaja Steel in
1995, followed by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) launching investigations in 1996
after Perwaja was declared insolvent, with debts and losses totalling RM10bil. Chia was
arrested by the ACA on Feb 9, 2004, and charged with embezzlement the next day. The
prosecution closed the case on May 4, 2007 after calling 29 witnesses.

On June 26, 2007, sessions court judge Akhtar Tahir acquitted and discharged
Chia of the charges of criminal breach of trust involving RM76.4mil without calling for
his defence, ruling the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the
tycoon. But his acquittal was bittersweet. Upon his acquittal, Chia had told The Star:
“Once when I put my hands on the table, there were 200 other hands of my friends on
that same table. But now there are not enough hands.”

And now Eric Chia was dies at 9.00 am, June 24,
2008 at a hospital in Sungai Petani after experiencing breathing difficulties.

In 1988, he was appointed as a manager in a company named Perwaja Holdings


Berhad. And in 1995, Tan Sri Eric Chia was resigned as a managing director of Perwaja
Holdings Berhad, as he had been making loans and the project has suffered a loss of RM
10 billion and the company was named as the bankrupt. The Anti-Corruption Agency
(ACA) has made an investigation on him that he committed criminal breach of
trust because the embezzled money of RM $ 76.4 million at February 19, 1994 when the
Managing Director.

On June 26, 2007, sessions court judge Akhtar Tahir acquitted and discharged
Chia of the charges of criminal breach of trust involving RM76.4mil without calling for
his defense, ruling the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the
tycoon. The judge also acquitted Chia of an alternative charge of dishonestly disposing of
Perwaja’s funds by entering into an agreement with NKK Corporation, Japan, and
authorizing the RM76.4 million to be paid into the account of Frilsham Enterprise Inc
with the American Express Bnak Ltd, Hong Kong.

He had been accused of doing so without the approval of the board of director of Perwaja
Rolling Mill and Development Sdn Bhd. The judge ruled the prosecution had failed to
establish a prime facie case against Chia. The prosecution has filed an appeal against the
decision. The wheelchair bound Chia, upon his acquittal, told the press then that
vindication had come too late. He said he had lost family and was estranged from his son
and daughter because of the shame.

on December 7, 1962, Eaitisham Shami Ahmed knows as Shami Ahmed.
Ahmed was brought to Britain as a young child, brought up and raised in England,
and started working part-time in his father's clothing business as a teenager on a market
stall in Burnley. He left school at the age of 16 and went full time into the business. He
encouraged his father to establish the Pennywide Cash and Carry on Bury New Road in
Manchester in 1980. Shami built up a successful wholesale business, founded in 1980 in
Manchester, which today trades as "The Juice Corporation". During the 1980s,
Manchester was at the centre of a youth scene of music of fashion, which led to its
labelling as Manchester. He observed that denim was very fashionable, and in 1985
formed the Joe Bloggs Clothing Company which sold quality jeans at reasonable prices.
By his early 20s the business had blossomed into a major high street concern, and
is now valued to be worth at least £50 million. Ahmed had the knack of bridging the gap
between his family's eastern culture and of the indigenous street culture - a product of
Lancashire and Pakistan, with a clear understanding of both and the business acumen to
place his garments where they have attracted undeniable street credibility. His brand label
now sells worldwide with showrooms in London and Europe, the Middle East, Russia,
Malta and South Africa.

Ahmed launched "The Legendary Joe Bloggs Clothing Company". It became part
of the Manchester scene and was quickly successful. Bloggs was the first British
company into the UK's top ten jeans brands. Shami made his first million at the age of 24.
WHAT MAKE SHAMI AHMED BANKRUPT

Shami Ahmed has been forced into personal bankruptcy by spread betting firms
chasing him for millions of pounds owed in gambling debts. A High Court judgment
against Mr Ahmed lays bare for the first time the story of how the one-time millionaire
from Burnley took a high-risk gamble that spectacularly backfired and left creditors,
including the taxpayer, more than £10m out of pocket.

His business successes began to be fewer in further between, and in 2005, he was
cleared in a fraud case in which HM Revenue and Customs alleged he had forged his own
arrest to avoid paying creditors.
Mr Ahmed thought he could regain his lost fortune by spread betting on the
booming stock exchange. Between 2000 and 2007, he placed millions of pounds of bets.
Any gains, of which there was "no evidence" before the court, were lost as soon as they
were credited to his account. A £9m win from betting on Moss Bros shares, for example,
was wiped out weeks later, an accountant representing HSBC bank told the judge.

Despite incurring heavy losses, Mr Ahmed always managed to find more cash to
continue his gambling and finance a "conspicuously wealthy lifestyle", to which, the
judge remarked, he was loyally committed.

As the Joe Bloggs Company declined, Ahmed tried to restore his fortune through
London Stock Exchange spread betting mainly through Tradindex. Mr Ahmed finally
declared bankruptcy in April. He now faces a battle with his former bookies over
remaining assets.
Paul Rossington, an analyst at William de Broe, said. "The company is capable of
achieving much more if it is put back on its feet." He said a buyer or partner bringing
more designer brands to the group would boost performance, because the large own-
branded range in the shops was not succeeding.
