PRECAUTIONS PRIOR FUMIGATION

1. Prior to the fumigation, perferably whilst the holds are empty, an inspection
shall be made by the Fumigator and the Master to determine that the holds to be
treated can be made sufficiently tight to prevent gas-seepage into accommodation,
working and adjacent spaces. Bilge and Cargo lines should, after testing, be made
gas tight by fitting of spade flanges in a readily accessible position in the engine
and pump room to enable a prompt reconnection to the pump;

2. The Fumigator shall provide the Master and the Port Warden with a written
statement attesting the results of the inspection and detailing the type and quantity
and TLV of fumigant to be used in each compartment;

3. At least 2 members of the ship's crew shall be identified and trained in the methods
of detection of the fumigant, its behaviour, hazardous properties, the relevant first
aid and emergency procedures. They should also be familiarized with the
instructions on the label of the fumigant. They shall be responsible for ensuring safe
conditions in all living and working spaces after the Fumigator has finally left the
ship. The ship shall have on board a copy of the Medical First Aid Guide and a
supply of the appropriate medicines for the fumigant in use;

4. All crew members shall be made aware of the hazards of the fumigants to be used;

5. The ship shall be provided with at least 2 gas detection devices appropriate to the
fumigant to be used with sufficient spares to permit regular monitoring of each
accommodation deck and working space at least 3 times daily.

6. At least four (4) sets of protective equipment appropriate to the fumigant being
used, shall be provided and shall comprise of self-contained breathing apparatus
having positive pressure mode, safety harness, lifeline and at least one spare air
bottle per set;
PRECAUTIONS PRIOR FUMIGATION
7. On application of the fumigant, the Fumigator shall post warning signs at all
entrances to spaces under fumigation identifying the fumigant and giving date and
time of application;

8. After ascertaining that no gas leakages exist, the Fumigator shall issue to the
Master and Port Warden a written statement that attests:
a. gas in the cargo spaces has reached a sufficient concentration to detect any
leakages;
b. spaces adjacent to those fumigated are gas free;
c. he is satisfied that the trained crew members are fully conversant with the
use of the gas detection equipment provided;

9. Before finally leaving the ship the Fumigator shall formally, in writing, relinquish to
the Master responsibility for maintaining safe conditions in all occupied spaces
aboard the ship;

PRECAUTIONS WHILE SAILING WITH FUMIGATED HOLDS

10. Gas concentration safety checks shall be made at appropriate locations throughout
the accommodation and working spaces at intervals not exceeding 8 hours or such
shorter periods as may be deemed necessary. The readings obtained shall be
recorded in either the ship's log book (or a book maintained specifically for such
purpose) ;

11. Throughout the fumigation period, entry into spaces under treatment should be
prohibited. If entry becomes imperative it should be effected by the Fumigator* and
at least one other person, each wearing full protective equipment suitable for the
fumigant in use and equipped with a safety harness and lifeline tended by a person
outside the space who is similarly equipped;

PRIOR DISCHARGING

12. Ships shall not work cargo until a marine chemist or Fumigator has certified that all
spaces to be entered by personnel are free from fumigant gases

13. Upon completion of discharge or when the ship is found to be free of fumigant, the
warning signs shall be removed from hold accesses.
