EXERCISES (CHAPTER 3 AND 4)

1. It is hypothesized that the number of breakdowns per week of a photocopy

machine at a school follows a Poisson distribution with mean λ = 2. The data in
TABLE 1 show the observed number of breakdowns per week during a sample of
100 weeks. Used a 5% significance level to test the hypotheses.

2. A contractor wishes to see whether there is a difference in time (in days) it takes
by three subcontractors to build different types of homes. Based on the data in
TABLE 2, answer the following questions:

TABLE 2
Subcontractors Number of days
A 25 30 43 41
B 15 21 23 33
C 30 17 35 31

a. Construct a suitable ANOVA table. Show your calculation.

b. Perform a suitable hypothesis testing with the given data. (used α = 0.05)
(13 marks)

3. A random sample of 500 people, all of whom drive approximately 17,000

kilometers per year was observed. The data in TABLE 3 classify the individuals
according to age and the number of auto accidents each has had during last three
years. The result of the analysis is displayed in OUTPUT 1.

a. Find the expected frequencies for A, B, C, and D.

b. Determine the value of the chi-square test statistics.
c. What is the critical value χ 2 α ,v if α = 0.05?
d. At a 10% level of significance, test whether the age of the drivers and the
number of accidents are independent.

4. Three types of outdoor paint; enamel, latex, and sunshine were tested to see how
long (in months) each lasted before it began crack, flake, and peel. They were
tested in four geographic locations (North, South, East, and West) in Malaysia to
study the effects of climate on the paint. Based on OUTPUT 2, answer the
following questions.

significance level.

5. The amounts of fat in three kinds of pizza are tested. OUTPUT 3 shows the result
of the test conducted. At 5% significance level, test whether there is sufficient
evidence that the difference in mean exist.

7. A researcher wishes to try three different techniques to lower the blood pressure
of individuals diagnosed with high blood pressure. The subjects are randomly
assigned to three groups; the first group takes medication, the second group
exercises, and third group follows a special diet. After four weeks, the reduction
in each person’s blood pressure is recorded. At 5% significance level, test the
claim that there is difference in effect among the techniques used. The data is
shown in TABLE 5.
