Title: 2 Ways of Making Your SDHC A Resident Hard Drive in XP :)

Post by: rljaplit on April 25, 2008, 11:06:20 PM

Recommended Fix - Mounting Your SD/SDHC Card

Recommended if you only have one SD/SDHC card reader (stock) and regularly swap out cards.

A simple solution is to mount the SD/SDHC card as a directory in C:\, which is a local disk. This tricks programs into
thinking they are being installed to a directory on C:\, and also allows you to swap cards on the fly without any
issues. And because you are not making any driver modifications, you get to keep your high read/write performance.
It's also much simpler and can be easily unmounted.

1. Create a Program Files directory on your SD/SDHC card (example: E:\Program Files\)
2. Create a SDHC directory in your C:\Program Files\ directory. (example: C:\Program Files\SDHC\)
3. Right click on My Computer and click Manage.
4. Select the Disk Management plugin under Storage on the left.
5. Right click on your SD/SDHC drive and click Change Drive Letter and Paths….
6. Click Add…
7. Make sure “Mount in the following empty NTFS folder” is selected, and browse for the directory you created in
step 2.
8. Click OK to the three windows open and close Computer Management.

Traditional Fix - MicroDrive Drivers

Recommended if you have a second card reader modification/hack or only own one memory card.

This fix will trick Windows and program installers into thinking your SD/SDHC card is a fixed local disk. While this has
the obvious benefit of allowing stubborn installers to install to your SD/SDHC card just like the Mount method, it also
carries the unfortunate side effects of decreased read/write performance, as well as hampering the card reader's
plug and play and hot-swappability (after you install this driver, once you swap out your card, Windows will not
quickly recognize the new card).

1. Download the MicroDrive drivers (http://www.xpefiles.com//files/xpfildrvr1224_320.zip) and extract them to a

folder on the desktop.
2. Insert your SD/SDHC card into your EeePC.
3. Click Start > Run > type “regedit” (without quotes) and click OK.
4. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_USB2.0&Prod_CardReader_SD0&Rev_0100/.
5. Inside that you should find another directory that is just a bunch of numbers. Mine reads: 146030377350&0.
Select it to display its contents in the right pane.
6. In the right pane you should see a key called “HardwareID”. Double-click on it.
7. You should see 7 lines of text. Copy ONLY the first line to the clipboard. Mine reads:
USBSTOR\DiskUSB2.0__CardReader_SD0__0100
8. Click Cancel, and close Registry Editor.
9. Open cfadisk.inf in the directory you unzipped the MicroDrive driver to.
10. Delete all lines between [cfadisk_device] and [cfadisk_addreg].
11. Below [cfadisk_device], insert a new line, and type the following: %Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,
12. After the comma, hit CTRL V to paste what you copied from the registry into the file.
13. Save the file.
14. Right click My Computer and click Manage.
15. On the left pane, click the Device Manager plugin.
16. Under disk drives, you should see SiliconMotion and USB2.0 Card Reader. Right click on the card reader and
click update driver.
17. Direct the driver updater window to the Hitachi driver you just edited. It won’t detect the driver automatically,
you have to specify that you're supplying the disk for the hardware and force it to use the driver.
18. After the driver is updated, restart Windows.

niyaaaa.....rupert lang....hehehehehe.....ok ito miles :) para you dont overburden the eee's ssd. And this way you
get to put all your apps on the sdhc, making it literally a resident hard drive. kailangan lang naka ntfs format yung
sdhc. Although ntfs is said to be strenuous on the sdhc, but at least mas mura yun sa ssd and easy to change. Also
to make it less strenuous on the sdhc, you can turn off ntfs date stamping through the registry :)

bro -- when you reinstall OS, you can also reformat sdhc there to ntfs. The installer will ask you to reformat drives
(ex. drive c). It will also show you other drives na pwede i-reformat (as long as the sdhc is inserted in the slot).
Then you can reformat it there along with the ssd :)

The dual boot SDHC needs to be FAT formatted as far as I've researched. So, no please don't reformat to NTFS or
convert the FAT formatting to NTFS.

ummm i think dapat hitachi macrodriver mo muna para maging resident drive yung sdhc then you'd be able to
reformat your sdhc via right click on the drive tpos format then make it into NTFS....

when u insgtall a new app...you have to custom install it and point it to the sdhc location...example: drive e:....then
you can install the apps there. If it default installs to drive c, it will be on drive c. So be careful....when ur about to
install...it will ask "install to drive c?", you have to choose custom install and browse to the desired drive location. :)

Here's an easier way to disable time stamping:

Tweak #2: Disable Last Access Timestamp

Whenever XP reads a file, it stamps the file with the date and time that you accessed it. This feature has its place
but is not required for normal use unless you rely on the date of last access for backup purposes, which is a rare
requirement for most backups. Putting a timestamp on a file that has just been read means that a write access has
to be made to disk, so every time a read is executed, a corresponding write is also executed.

To disable the last access timestamp behaviour, start a command prompt, enter the following command then reboot;

FSUTIL behavior set disablelastaccess 1

Those of us who read and write Her Majesty's English need to take note of the American spelling of the BEHAVIOR
parameter. To turn timestamps back on, repeat the command but replace 1 with 0;

FSUTIL behavior set disablelastaccess 0

Guys,

I have used both methods extensively....and my personal opinion is....the Mounting Method is the better one. It's
way easier to set-up, it retains the hi-speed processing of the sdhc and you can still take out the sdhc without
causing you're system to hang :) just my 2-cent's worth :)

FAT32 is only used now pag meron kang ibang os na nag-aaccess sa drive mo aside from xp and vista, otherwise
NTFS is the norm. Also, I think win98 and dos cannot access ntfs file system.

NTFS is a lot safer than FAT32 in terms of corruption. Also, under vista, you can format a removable drive as NTFS.
Yun na ata ang norm ng Vista. Under XP, you can only format SDHC as FAT32

Note: Here's one thing I noticed when I tried formatting my SDHC to NTFS in my Vista desktop. When I put it in my
eepc SDHC card reader, inde nya nabasa yung card. But when I put it in the SDHC card reader I bought from cdrking
(60 pesos), my eeepc-xp can read and write to it. weird.

Q uote fro m : e dlcha n o n July 05, 2008, 08:04:44 P M

Applicable lang ba sa Program File s yung MOUNT m e tho d? P we de ba ng yung buong SDHC a ng m a add sa C: ?
Ex : Hindi ak o na g cre ate ng My Do cum ents folde r sa D: (SDHC ) at ang natitira ng disk spa ce k o sa C : (SSD) a y 900m b. P ag nag sa ve ba
ak o ng prese nta tio n file na 1.2gb a ng size sa My Docum ents fo lde r sa C : , a uto m a tic ba itong m a g write ng 900m b sa SSD a t 300m b sa
SDHC ?

Yes, Mount is applicable to the entire SDHC. You can save any files onto the mounted sdhc. If you save something
to my docs (which has not been mounted), it will all save to drive c.

The purpose of mounting the entire sdhc is to add more space to drive c. The system will think that it's using the
ssd, when in fact it's using the sdhc. The reason why you put in program files, is to allow the system to install
applications to it. So when you're installing an app, in install process, point to c:\program files\sdhc\ <name of app>.

If you just want to save a file, point to the removable drive directly....ex: save to d:\docs.

Hope this helps :)

sugge stion nung tech sa o ffice .
pa g fat32 daw ka si e h hindi m a syado m a ga law yung nasa lo ob
ka si da w O S a ng na ka la ga y sa C:, so in order not to a ccidentally form a t or so m e thing, nila ga y nya a s FAT32.
and yung D: dahil m ga docum e nts a nd stuff na laging nagpa pa lit, da pa t na m an da w NTFS.
tha t tim e ka si di p ak o m aruno ng m ag reform at, so agre e lang a ko .

no w, i cant re form a t it to NTFS ka si m a y m ga nilagay n m ga a pplica tio ns yung o ffice te ch fo r it to wo rk sa office e nviro nm ent nam in.

yung sa iba ng la pto ps k o nm a n, puro NTFS na ang m ga drives. both C: a nd D: k aya o k na m a n.

yung sa EEEPC na 8G, nilagay k o lang e h yung nLITE XP + o ffice 2007 = 2.92G
m e ro n pang natitira ng 4.98G sa SSD
aya w k o na galawin yung SSD
so was conte m plating sana na dun sa 16G SDHC ilagay m ga ibang a pplica tio ns a nd do cum ents
na reform at ko na nga yung SDHC a s NTFS yung nga lang di ko m a im ount dun sa C :

anywa y, hindi ko na m a n na tinata ngal yung SDHC sa lo ob. for do cum ents la ng talaga sya a t 16G nam an so m alak i p rin un.

yung m ga m o vie s, so ngs, picture s nasa 3 e xte rnal drive s. all 250G he he . nauubos pe ra ko sa m ga ex ternal drives.
m o vie s na dun a nd i ca n plug a nd pla y ka hit sang tv hehe.

O T na pa la. anyway, ro om m o nam a n to RL he he . thanks. uy yung sticke r m o a t yung pe a nut brittle a ndto pa .

FAT32 is o nly used no w pa g m ero n k ang iba ng o s na nag-aa ccess sa drive m o a side fro m xp and vista , o the rwise NTFS is the no rm . Also ,
I think win98 a nd do s ca nnot access ntfs file syste m .

NTFS is a lot sa fe r tha n FAT32 in te rm s of co rruptio n. Also , unde r vista , yo u can form a t a rem ovable drive a s NTFS. Yun na ata ang norm
ng Vista . Unde r XP, yo u ca n o nly fo rm at SDHC as FAT32

No te: He re 's one thing I noticed when I tried form a tting m y SDHC to NTFS in m y Vista deskto p. W hen I put it in m y e epc SDHC ca rd
rea de r, inde nya na ba sa yung ca rd. But when I put it in the SDHC ca rd rea de r I bought fro m cdrking (60 pe so s), m y e ee pc-x p ca n re ad
and write to it. weird.

Actually under xp, you can format sdhc to fat, fat32 or ntfs. Just right click on sdhc > properties > hardware tab >
select the sdhc > properties > policies tab > and set to optimize > then you can already format the sdhc to ntfs if
you wish :)

fun to uncover plenty things with xp no? That's why it's my favorite eh.

I'd really love na sana to migrate the eee to vista (vLite)...kaya lang that frickin winsxs is just to heavy! Baka you
know of a technique to get around that?

I was able to vlite my Vista ultimate install disk to around 722mb which amounted to 1.2gb footprint installed. I didn't
touch the winsxs anymore since the installed footprint is already acceptable to me. Ang problema ko lang dun sa
EEE900 ko before is di ko ma-fix yung ACPI audio error every time I boot up. It was looking for the audio driver in
WDM directory which is only for XP since sa Vista, iba na yung directory where the audio drivers are located. It was
only a minor incovenience though since audio function keys (Fn+keys) don't work. Other than that, everything was
fine and Vista is running fine. You have to have 2GB RAM though otherwise you'll notice the slowness.

Note: I think winsxs size depends on the vista installer size coz I noticed that the winsxs folder on the regular Vista
install on my desktop is pretty big. It's in the GB's which in my eee, it was way smaller.
