Indivisible  -  Collective  Citizen  Archive

Leeds  City  Museum  (Arena)
Light  Night  Leeds  2010

Creative  Directors  Adam  Young  &  Becki  Griffiths
Indivisible  Associates  for  the  project:  Adam  Wilks,  Alex  Evens,    Ben  Mills,  Mike  McDonald,  Marina
Demetriadis,  Stephen  Balkwill  and  Thomas  Thiele

On   Friday   8th   October   2010,   Indivisible   invited   the   public   to   share   their   memories   and   dreams   as
part   of   Leeds’   Light   Night   celebrations.   The   aim   of   the   project   was   to   create   a   snapshot   of   the
feelings  towards  the  city  from  its  own  citizens.  We  wanted  to  collect  memories  and  dreams-‐for-‐a-‐
better-‐future  of  Leeds.

We   wanted   to   see   5000   balloons   descend   from   the   Leeds   Museum   Balcony   onto   the   giant   map   in
the  Arena  below.  In  reality  we  achieved  half  of  that.  With  a  dedicated  team  blowing  up  balloons,
we   also   inviting   the   public   to   help   us   by   filling   out   a   postcard   and   placing   it   in   the   balloon.   A
drastic  shortage  of  pens  and  an  overwhelming  attendance  to  the  event  ensured  that  some  people
simply  had  to  just  sit  back  and  enjoy  the  view.  Over  8000  people  passed  through  the  doors  of  the
museum  that  evening  and  at  least  739  people  were  able  to  fill  out  our  postcards,  put  them  in  a
balloon  and  release  them  onto  a  giant  map  below.

The  postcard  included  the  following  information:
Age
Postcode
Favorite  Memory  Of  Leeds
Hope  for  the  Future  of  Leeds

At  9pm  came  the  grand  finale.  We  opened  the  doors  to  the  Arena  hall  and  watched  as  over  100
people   (of   all   ages)   rushed   through   a   set   of   double   doors   with   one   purpose   in   mind.   POP   THE
BALLOONS!   The   noise   generated   from   this   act   was   incredible   (imagine   a   fire   at   a   fireworks
factory).  The  pure,  unadulterated  joy  on  peoples  faces  as  they  bounced  around  the  hall,  stomping
and   stamping   out   every   balloon   in   sight   brought   some   onlookers   to   tears.   Encapsulated   within
roughly   half   of   the   balloons   was   an   age/an   address/a   memory/a   dream.   It   took   EXACTLY   two
minutes  for  every  balloon  to  be  popped.  At  this  point  people  began  scrambling  at  the  floor  to  read
the  liberated  postcards  filled  with  hopes  and  dreams.  Onlookers  from  the  balcony  numbered  as
many   as   the   assassins/liberators   below   and   before   order   had   regained   itself   they   had   all
congregated  in  the  Arena  hall  to  share  the  experience  first  hand.

The  information  below  comes  to  you  in  no  particular  order  and  surely  is  not  the
entirety  of  the  postcards  filled  out  that  night.  If  you  are  looking  for  any  specific
information  from  this  document  you  may  wish  to  hit  Ctrl+F  (or  Cmd+F  for  Mac)
to  search  the  document  for  keywords.

This   ‘Archive’   represents   a   single   frame   in   the   ongoing   story   of   a   ‘vibrant’   city.   It
is   a   celebration   of   all   of   us   and   a   voice   for   change,   a   provocation   and   a   well
deserved  pat  on  the  back.  People  are  the  soul  of  any  city  and  this  compilation  of
memories  and  dreams  reflects  the  beautiful  diversity  of  culture  in  Leeds.  What  is
most  striking  is  the  pride  and  the  ambition  for  a  better  future.  One  word  comes
up  time  and  time  again  below  and  that  is  ‘Unity’

ENJOY!
