Survey Report on the Favourite Sports Based On Races

10 Introduction
Sport is an organized, competitive and skilful physical activity requiring
commitment and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. "Sport"
comes from the Old French word, desport, which means "leisure”. American English
uses the term "sports" to refer to this general type of recreational activity, whereas other
regional dialects use the singular "sport". The Persian word for "sport" is based on the
root bord, meaning "winning". The Chinese term for "sport”, tiyu connotes "physical
training". The Modern Greek term for sport is athlitismos, directly cognate with the English
terms "athlete" and "athleticism". The oldest definition of sport in English (1300) is of
anything humans find amusing or entertaining. Other meanings include gambling and
events staged for the purpose of gambling; hunting, games and diversions, including
ones that require exercise. Roget's defines the noun sport as an "Activity engaged in for
relaxation and amusement" with synonyms including diversion and recreation. An
example of a more sharply defined meaning is "an athletic activity where one competitor
or a team of competitors plays against another competitor or group of competitors (with) a
conclusive method of scoring. Not determined by a judge."
The main purpose of this survey is to identify the favourite sports among teacher
trainees based on their races. From this survey, we can extract the data we had received
by organizing them logically, coherently and cohesively in table form and came out with a
graph of teacher trainees favorite sports. Apart from that, we can also know whether
teacher trainees of Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Sultan Abdul Halim involved
themselves in sport or not as this is one of the qualities needed to be a good teacher. The
survey topic that we had chosen is suitable to be conducted as most of teacher trainee’s
have leisure time during their weekend to occupy themselves with sports activity.

We have two points that we want to focus and extract from this survey which are
the favourite sport of teacher trainees based on their race and their reason for playing
sport. From both information, we can conclude whether teacher trainees are voluntarily
involving themselves or doing sport just for fun. In addition, we can also see the
achievement of teacher trainees in their favorite sport.

20 Background of the Study

1
We had the survey form distributed among teacher trainees of different races on
the 19th of August 2010 and had the form returned to us on the same day too. It took
mainly about 2 to 3 hours at most to finish the interviewing part as we had distributed all
the form equally among the races which gave us the data of 14 for each race. These
respondents covered the students of PPISMP and PISMP.

30 Significance of the Study

The significance or the importance of this research is to know the types of sport
they like the most. Besides that, this report is to identify whether race influence teacher
trainees favourite sport. For example, do Indians play football more than Malays? After
gathering all the data, we can analyze the interest of students.

4.0 Respondents

We had received full cooperation from all the respondents while we were gathering
the information through the survey form. All teacher trainees answered all the questions
without leaving any blank question as we had expected. This had made it easier for us to
calculate and tabulate all the data.

The respondents for this survey came from various classes of PPISMP and
PISMP. The number of the participants was 42 teacher trainees, which was equally
divided between the three major races which are Malay, Chinese and Indian. Ages
ranged from 18 to 21.

50 Methodology

Questionnaire

Final draft of questionnaire which had received approval by the lecturer had been used to
be distributed among teacher trainees. We had altered the first draft of questionnaire to
suit the main purpose of this survey. All group members had agreed to use the final draft
of questionnaire to collect all the relevant data we need.

The questionnaire mainly asked questions about:

1. The type of sport teacher trainees like most.

2
2. One favorite sport to choose out of few choices we had given.

3. Time spent to play their favorite sport.

4. The reason why teacher trainees play sports.

5. Their highest achievement in that sport.

The questionnaires were distributed on the 19th of August 2010 and were collected back
on the same day too after a few hours. The full report of this survey was started as soon
as we had done all the tabulation of findings in a table.

From the Table 3, we can see that the highest level of achievement in favorite sports
by teacher trainees is school. About 15 teacher trainees from 42 teacher trainees
claimed that they had at most played for their school. The second highest is none (no
achievement) which is 13 teacher trainees. The least level of achievement reached by
teacher trainees is country which is none.

Data presentation:

Figure 1: Graph of Favorite Sports Based on Races

Figure 1 shows the tabulation of favorite sports based on different races that are Malay,
Chinese and Indian. From the vertical bar graph above, we can conclude that the most
played sports among teacher trainees of different races is badminton, which is played
mostly by Chinese and followed by Malay and Indians. The least sport played by teacher

trainees is volleyball which is represented by one respondent of Malay and none from
Chinese and Indians. Referring to races, we can see that most Malay teacher trainees
play football and badminton. Chinese teacher trainees preferred to play badminton the
most and some also spend time on other sports. On the other hand, Indian teacher
trainees play mostly badminton, followed by netball and football.

Figure 2: Pie Chart of Teacher Trainees Favorite Sports

The Figure 2 above shows the overall percentage of 7 different types of sports played by
teacher trainees of Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Sultan Abdul Halim. Among those
listed by us are football, badminton, netball, bowling, volleyball and tennis. There are also
other sports played by teacher trainees that are various which are basketball and jogging.
From the pie chart, we can conclude that most teacher trainees love to play badminton
which took 38% out of the overall percentage. The second most favored sport is football
with 24% popularity amongst teacher trainees. Apart from that, we can also say that the
least favored sport among teacher trainees is volleyball which took 2% of the whole
percentage.

7.0 Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Bar Graph and Pie Chart

In carrying out this research to know the favourite sports amongst teacher trainees
of Institut Pendidikan Guru Sultan Abdul Halim based on their races, we had collected all
the data needed, analyzed them and came out with a complete table of teacher trainees’
favourite sport based on races. To represent our data in graphical form, we had chose
two types of visual representation we thought is the best to describe our data which are

7
vertical bar graph and pie chart. But referring to the ability to present our data perfectly
and accurately based on our topic, we had agreed that the vertical bar graph is the best
way to show our findings result. Through vertical bar graph, we can see clearly the
information about sports favoured by teacher trainees according to their races. Bar graph
also has many special features compared to other visual representations.

A bar graph is a graph which displays discrete data in separate columns. It is used
to show relationships between groups. The two items being compared do not need to
affect each other. It is a fast way to show big differences. A double bar graph can be used
to compare two data sets. Categories are considered unordered and can be rearranged
alphabetically, by size and etcetera. There are many advantages of using this type of
visual representation. Firstly, the vertical bar graph visualized strongly. We can easily
compare two or three data sets for example the kind of data we have used in our
presentation; races. Besides, there are also disadvantages of using bar graph. One of it is
that the graph categories can be reordered to emphasize certain effects and yields false
impressions. Apart from that, this bar graph is use only with discrete data. But for our
topic and research there is no need to use other kind of data as we are using discrete
data.

On the other hand, we had also constructed pie chart to analyze the data and to
see it more clearly. A pie chart displays data as a percentage of the whole. Each pie
section has a label and percentage, which made it easier for us to see and understand
the findings without having to refer elsewhere. The advantage of using this pie chart is it
is visually appealing. Moreover, this type of visual representation also shows percent of
total for each category. The disadvantages of pie chart are that judging against the
vertical bar graph, pie chart is more complicated to understand and it compare two
specific data. Furthermore, we cannot get to know the unknown well unless it is being
specified. It only fits from 3 to 7 categories only, and if it’s more than that then the pie
chart is not suitable to be used anymore as the sector would be too small to show the
exact result. It is also weak as it only uses discrete data. From this, there are many
disadvantages of using the pie chart for our visual presentation and we think that the best
visual presentation for our research and survey is the bar graph as it shows the graph
more clearly and are more suitable to illustrate our data.

8
Advantage Disadvantage
Bar Graph • Good way of showing • Categories can be
the information clearly reordered to emphasize
• Show the differences certain effects
between the value • Used only for discrete
• Can compare easily data
• Discrete data
• Visualized strongly

Pie Chart • Total data number • No exact numerical data

should be included • Difficulty to understand
• Displays data as a • Difficult compare two
percentage of the whole specific data
• Visually appealing • Can only fit from 3 to 7
• Should have a label and categories only
percentage • Weak as it only uses
• Shows percent of total discrete data’s
for each category

8.0 Conclusion

From this survey, we can conclude that every teacher trainees in IPSAH have their
own favorite sport. As we know, sport became very important to people nowadays. All
level of age such as children, adolescent and adult can participate in sport activities.
Sport is also important for teacher as it is one of the qualities needed to be a good
teacher.

9
From the questionnaire we had distributed to all teacher trainees of Institut
Pendidikan Guru Kampus Sultan Abdul Halim, it had clearly stated that the finding for
teacher trainees’ favorite type of sport is the outdoor sport. Most teacher trainees had
agreed that they like to play outdoor game more than indoor game.

Out of all types of sports we had listed for teacher trainees to choose from, 16 out
of 42 teacher trainees love to play badminton which made it the most favored sport by
teacher trainees. The least favored sport by teacher trainees is volleyball which brings the
total of 1 teacher trainees out of 42.

Apart from that, we had also asked a question on how much time do teacher
trainees spend on their favorite sports. Most teacher trainees spend

From the survey too, we had concluded that most teacher trainees play sports to
maintain their health. This is proven as 22 teacher trainees agreed that playing sports
helps them maintain their health. From the question too, we had two teacher trainees
which say that they play sports just for fun. This gave us a good view of the main point as
most teacher trainees play sports for a reason, whether to maintain health, fill their leisure
time, or maybe to improve their achievement in sport.

Referring to teacher trainees level of achievement in sport, we had 15 of them

whom had played for their schools, 13 of them had never been into any competition, 9
played for their districts and 5 played for their states. Although none of teacher trainees
had reached the state level, we can still be proud as 29 out of 42 which are more than
half had at least played for school, district and state.

From all the findings, we can conclude that teacher trainees’ favorite sports differ between
races. For example, most Malay teacher trainees love football whilst none of the Chinese
love this sport. Most Chinese teacher trainees choose badminton as their favorite sport.
Indian teacher trainees also have the highest preferred sport of badminton. As the
conclusion, teacher trainees’ favorite sports go with their races.
