The Church
by Pastor Jon Miller

Most of the time when we hear the word “Church” we think of a building. On Sunday morning when we
wake our kids I always tell them to get up and get ready for “Church”. Yet, in the Bible the word church
referred to the believers in Christ coming together to break bread and pray. Whenever Christ said, “I will
build my church” he didn’t have a beautiful cathedral in mind. He had us in mind - a community of
people coming together for the purpose of prayer, breaking bread, and studying the Word.

God established the church as a community because He knows that we are programmed to worship.
God also knows that if we are not careful we get our focus in worship on the wrong thing. In Israel they
worshipped the temple instead of worshipping God. For this reason the prophet Jeremiah told the
Israelites not to trust in lying words saying, “The temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord.” (Jeremiah
7:4). How soon the people had forgotten Solomon’s prayer when he dedicated the temple. Solomon
knew that God was too big to be contained in a building. In his prayer he said, “The heaven and the
heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house...” (1 Kings 8:27)
In the Old Testament when the children of Israel were marching through the wilderness God sent
serpents that bit the people who were complaining. In order to be healed the people had to look up to a
bronze serpent that Moses made and placed upon a pole. (Numbers 21:9) Years later after Israel was
in the promise land we see the serpent reappear in Scripture again. This time the people are not being
healed by it but they are burning incense to it as if it were a god. This so upset King Hezekiah that he
broke it into pieces and directed the people’s attention back to the true and living God. (2 Kings 18:4)
Just like in Jeremiah's day the people had lost their focus.

My prayer for us here at Mt. Pleasant is that we remember that the community of believers is more
important than the building that we meet in. I know that it’s going to be hard for some in our church when
the old building is torn down because we have a lot of good memories that are connected with the
building and the location. We have to remember though that our memories are not about shingles,
carpet and paneling they are about fellowship, tears, and laughter that we have shared with one another
within those walls. Those memories of tears and laughter are about the people and about the moving of
the spirit at that location. Even though they are connected to the building they are not about the building.
These are memories that will live on and we will pass on to our children and grandchildren.

We are also blessed that in our new building great care was taken to preserve a lot of the history of Mt.
Pleasant with the stained glass windows and some of the furnishings. But the most important part of Mt.
Pleasant is not the windows or the pews but that God has promised to meet with us when the people
come together for worship. Solomon said that there is a time to tear down and a time to build up.
(Ecclesiastes 3:3) None of us know what tomorrow holds, if the community of believers here continues
to grow it may be necessary to build again. Making a decision to build is always easier when we keep
our focus on the people being the church.

The store owner smiled and whistled and out of
the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle
of his store followed by five teeny, tiny balls of
fur.
One puppy was lagging considerably behind.
Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging,
limping puppy and asked, "What's wrong with
that little dog?"
The store owner explained that the veterinarian
had examined the little puppy and had
discovered it didn't have a hip socket. It would
always limp. It would always be lame.
The little boy became excited. "That is the puppy
that I want to buy!"
The store owner said, "No, you don't want to buy
that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give
him to you."
The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight
into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger,
and said, "I don't want you to give him to me.
That little dog is worth every bit as much as all
the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll

be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies."
To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled
left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the store owner and softly replied, "Well, I don't
run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands."
